If you have a webcomic, congratulations! You're officially a webcartoonist.

Don't listen to him. He's not even a webcartoonist himself. It got revoked because of non-payment of dues.

I thought it was just 'cartoonist'. I mean, if your comic can't be put on any other medium other than on the web (i.e, it includes sounds, animations, or infinite canvas, and wouldn't work the same way in print...) then its a regular comic. Thus, cartoonist.

Man, those dues'll get ya every time. And you gotta make it to the union meetings or next thing you know there's a new handbook.

Webcartoonist probably doesn't apply to me because I don't write the strip. I'd call myself an illustrator.

It's all just a name. Not really important. Though I do believe I never figure out what the exact term is for a webcomic maker... Maybe that's it?

Anyone who puts words and pictures together online is a webcartoonist.

You probably have to make enough money to live off of it to put it on business cards, though.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

A pro gamer, a juggler, and a webcartoonist walk into a bar.

The pro gamer says, "I got 300 headshots last night! I'm so awesome!"

The juggler says, "Oh yeah? I just juggled eight broken bottles while blindfolded! I'm the best juggler ever!"

The webcartoonist says, "I have no idea what you guys are talking about, but I'm going to write about it on a message board anyway."

BWAHAHAH! someone walking up to you on the street? The thing about geek fame is that it only applies where geeks gather.
seriously, Tycho and Gabe could probably get on stage at a county fair and say "hi! we're Tycho and Gabe!" and averyone would yell, " get off the stage! The pig judgin's about to start!!!"

I've actually had someone I didn't know ask for an autograph once! She saw me drawing on campus and recognized Thatguy :D As it turns out she was a friend of one of my coworkers who I had given my site to, but she was still a stranger and a fan - so it qualifies!!

Do you draw stuff? Do you post it on the net?

By combining the terms cartoonist, from drawing, and web, from net, you are a cartoonist web.... web cartoonist....

I guess you're a webcartoonist when you have a running webcomic. You know, something of a decent longetivity.

But I'll let people call me anything. I think I'd prefere being called comic author, but it isn't really important what they call you, but what they imply by that name. Even "comic author" is derogatory term if by "comic" they mean "shallow fun for little kids".

Oh, well, scrap that. There are a few titles I find used wrong. Illustrator, for instance. Here's why:
A person who draws comic isn't an illustrator of it, regardless whether he writes it or not. Proper title is, perhaps, "comic artist". Calling comic artist an illustrator implicitely supports a few wrong believs:
a) that writer is the real author of the comic and that artist is there only to draw what writer tells him without any personal input.
b) that comics are basically lots of illustrations stacked one next to the other.
Comics and illustration are two very different sorts of trade.

If you have a good archive of comics up on the web that you're proud enough to show to family, friends, and random people of the net, congrats. You're an webcomicker.

Or whatever it is you want to be called.

I prefer the term: creator.

It sounds fancy.

I consider myself a hack and nothing more. The irony of the title is that I consider myself a few rungs further up the ladder than some who call themselves 'webcartoonists'. :)
