Sadly, no male lions are bastards... This is because, if a lion's mother re-marries while he is young, his new step-father will kill him.

Lions do steal from hyenas; if hunting lionesses find a hyena with meat, they'll drive the hyena away and take it. Of course, the reverse is also true, but hey, why should only the hyeanas get called cowardly thieves for it?

First, heyenas very rarely -steal- from lions... They clean up after them much more commonly. I've seen what happened to at least one heyena pack that made the mistake of ganging up on (and I mean nothing negative about pack-hunting) on a lioness they caught alone. When her family found her, the alpha male hunted the heyenas down and rat-fucked 'em, en masse.

But, to answer your question, because for heyenas, it's business as usual, while for the lions, it's an opportune rarity. When someone who can kick your ass into orbit takes your stuff, it's not "cowardly theivery" it's just "theivery aka: the Natural Order". When the heyena pack takes down it's first elephant, they can start talking shit to the lions.

Realistically, the ability to feed yourself without subjecting yourself to the same stresses and dangers that the lions face is intelligent, clever, and admirable... But in practice, we humans tend to revere those who "work for a living" rather those who live by means we find less strenuous, and thus less honorable. Kinda fucked, but true.
