The kitten tops the last three.

Sometimes when i get out of bed at night to use the bathroom and the lights are off, I invision this dog/man thing with eight eyes and a long thin tongue, he has overly long arms which kinda drag on the floor. the hair on its body is mostly smooth, except about the neck and shoulders where its matted and wirey, this stretches to a mane-ish outgrowth. and it grins. perpetually. I hate not being able to see behind me in this situation and am very glad my bed is against a wall and faces the door.

That's creepy!

I had a dream with these things that looked like human heads with long hair. The hair moved like spider legs to propel the creatures. When they opened their mouth, they had a giant eyeball in there. When they opened their eyes lids, they were empty except lined with sharp teeth.

I agree.
The image that has frightened me the most lately is that of a gentleman, snappily dressed with waistcoat and all, who I suddenly realize has a goat's head. Goat eyes are so scary.

Scariest being I've encountered in a dream was a little baby doll that floated with glowing red eyes... kind of screaming a bit. Even though it floated, it moved like it was walking.

Scary as all hell.

...not too difficult to beat, though, I just kind of pushed it over and it vaporized.

Try this....

Make a few random slashes at the page with a pencil, then stare at it for a while and see if anything pops out.

Scribbling, slashing, and other random techniques can produce a good base for non-humanoid monsters

Well, I haven't done this myself, but an art book I have recommends using reference pictures of real world animals (if you find any good reference galleries, don't hesitate to put them into my other thread!).

So you can use the fangs and face of a wolf or bear (or a naked mole rat!), the tentacles of a polyp or squid, the eyestalks of a slug...

Just think of which parts you want to use and then find the relevant photos.

I read a short story like that once.

This guy is driving to work, and there's a box in the road, resting on some roadkill. Some car coming the other way is about to hit it and at the last second it skitters out of the way - against the wind. So he does a double take, and then he can't get it out of his head (because he's an engineer - we're like that). So on his lunch break he goes on a run back out there to see if the box is still around, still on the road kill. And he's like, wtf. So he goes back to work and then he's driving home, and he thinks this box is a monster or something, so he tries to hit it with his car.

And then BAM! It jumps on his windshield, he crashes the car, he dies. Evil shapeshifting box of doom thing!

And boxes are easy to draw, too. But maybe not what you want in a fantasy comic.

Look at mythological monsters. They're always pretty interesting, and can be a good inspiration for a scary monster. (exe: Medusa, hydra, cerberus) All have somewhat disturbing elements or abilities. Sometimes even being abstact is cool (exe:http://pointlesscomic.com/?strip_id=10, which is an interesting creature/monster)

one of the more interestin creatures I dreamed about once,

it was built like a centaur but rather than a horse its lower body was that of a wolf, it had no head, because out of it's neck was growing all sorts of tubes that reconnected to it's right forearm which was shaped like some sort of bio-organic gun, and at the end of the gun it had three wolf heads like cerberus. in my dream it sat by the shore of a lake and enaged in existental conversations with me

Rkolter hit it on the head for scary things: Pre-packaged as normal seeming is SCARY. Also scary is using the things people have nightmares about as elements. Signs scared me because when I was a kid I had severe nightmares with every single one of the alien apperances in them (Aliens landing in my front yard, aliens standing on the roof/in front of window). The dreams gave me the creeps when I was awake. Now that I'm adult...it's tornado dreams. I get racy heartbeats watching storm chaser documentaries. Don't ask me why.

Another thing you could do is flip through wildlife catalogues until something jumps out at you, and then humanize it as much as you can. Humanized monsters are creaper than wildlife looking monsters.

Trainspotters scared me because I had, as a teenager, a bad trip with LSD that included seeing a floating baby coming after me. Yeah... don't ask. Just... it was absolutely freaky. Then in Trainspotters, the guy there had a daymare of a dead baby crawling up the wall, then along the ceiling until it was over him, then dropping on him.

Gahahhhhh... I got the shivers just writing that.

Take something perfectly normal. Something everyone knows. Give something odd, just a little outside of the norm, something that doesn't belong.
Example: A man with awkward proportions or slightly different eyes, a cat with hands or a dog that doesn't move but only stares...
You get the concept.
