I'm a Nintendo man, and the name change strikes me as... weird and unnecessary. They've already talked about "Revolution" so long that I had already gotten used to it, and everyone in the gaming world already knows when it's going to come out and will buy it most likely based on whether they like the games enough. This whole thing doesn't sit right.
However, I'll probably just buy it anyways if I have the money, because the name doesn't really make a difference to me. I'll just end up calling it 'The new nintendo system' anyways, or saying 'You want to play Mario' instead of 'Hey, you want to go play with my Wii?'
Or, knowing me, that will become a running joke rather quickly.

Meh. I read the article on GameSpot about this, wherein they quoted parts of the marketing presentation. To hear the presenters in my mind saying phrases like, "It's not about you or me. It's about Wii," made the whole thing sound like an episode of "The Apprentice." Hence my negative evaluation of the whole thing. Yeah, there'll be lots of penis and urine jokes at the beginning, and they'll taper off like the PlayStation jokes did (although the word "PlayStation" still sounds kind of funny when Judge Judy says it), but I still can't see myself watching a commercial for a new game on TV with the word "Wii" popping up on the screen at the end without shaking my head.
Although it might look kind of funny if they had the letters flip around and turn into that little Mario "M"/moustache face symbol they used in Super Mario Sunshine. That's about the only creative thing I could see happening that wasn't a forced pun.
"Wii need help."

I still say it should be called "The Cock."

Go to http://www.retrojunk.com and look it up if you don't believe me. Not to mention all the other horrible commericals they had for their products.
As for the 'Wii' itself, I think it's starting to fall into the 'Let's be more like Apple, they know what they're doing!" even though they don't. Their marketing stratagies are the same. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some ex-apple employee went to work for Nintendo and was like, 'Ok, here's my idea. We'll drop this whole 'revolution' business. That's so 90's. What you need is an 'I'. Because everything cool has an 'I' in it. In fact, let's put TWO I's in there, and make it.... DOUBLE COOL! Yeah. And what goes good with two II's? Well let's see. You've got Mario, so 'Mii'? Nah, that sounds too self centered. We can't be THAT obvious. Hey, you guys did it with Wario! Let's just turn it upsideown. "Wii". YES! IT'S BRILLANT!"
Then the whole marketing board, stunned by either loss of brain function, or having the logic center of their brain snapped like a twig, all began clapping incoherantly.
And thus, the 'Wii' was born.
I actually like Wii a whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooole lot better than Revolution. May as well call it Nintendo X-TREME!!!!!!!!! Wii works best written down, I'll admit, but it's no more of juvenile reference to the male organ than PlayStation is.
But hey, I voted against ComicGenesis.

Yes it will sell... to Internet forum-goers and Nintendo fanboys. Unfortunately, the indication Nintendo's been giving is that they're attempting to expand their market to the general public and non-gamers (remember the first video with the controller and the old people?). A dopey name like Wii is exactly what won't help them do this.Ignacio wrote:Ok, it's an outright silly name. But have you guys gone through any other messageboards since the announcement? Silly or not, every single board is talking about it. This system's gonna sell.
But then again, I'm a Nintendo fanboy... and not in marketing.
