Oddly most of the racial diversity in my comic seems to be in it's non human cast. I have two black characters and one jew, of course the jew is Drunk and Bitter Jesus.blackaby wrote:I'm interested - for people with vaguely real-life comics, is there any reason for the race of the characters you've chosen for your comic? Is there a reason they are the same/a different race from you? Any reason you've gone with a particular culture only, or if you mixed them up? Did you make up different racial divisions to address a real life situation?
I had decided when first creating the strip that I wanted a retro character from the 70s who would play the part of a man "trapped in the 21st century". When I remembered back to the 70s the single most iconic image of that decade, to me, was the blaxploitation movie star. So I came up with Brewster "Da Funk" Bombe, or Funky as he is known to his friends. I modled him a bit off of Spike from Cowboy Bebop (even though he was a jew) and Taurus from the game Interstate '76.
The other black character in my strip is Fnanp's best friend and room mate Larp the Barbarian Lord of Barton. Why'd I make him black? No real reason other than to show being a Dungeons and Dragons nerd isn't exclusive to the white folk.
There has been some discussion amoungst the fans wether or not Kiki is asian. I hadn't figured her being so when I created the character.
I've been toying with the idea of adding an east Indian character to the strip for some time now.
