I'm not sure what they're called, but you can get one as part of the Figure Drawing Set in the Art Supplies section of http://www.metmuseum.org/store/ or at any good art supply store. There's also here and, of course, eBay.

Artist's Manikins? You can find them at any art supply store.
"It is the difference between the unknown and the unknowable, between science and fantasy - it is a matter of essence. The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Some do bow in that final direction. Others advance upon it. To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three. I may submit to the unknown, but never to the unknowable. The man who bows in that final direction is either a saint or a fool. I have no use for either."

That was also the origial purpose of the software "Poser"... Which still ships with an artist's mannequin as one of the figures (as well as male, female, child, skeleton, several animals...) and still the purpose I use it for.
Like almost everything else remotely related to art or artistic endeavor, it's mostly used for cheap porn now. Which is nice.

Huh. Ghastly looks a lot younger in this picture than in the others ...
Gotta say, though, that the puppet is a handy tool. I own one; my mom brought it along from a shopping trip. I need to start using it more; I always get in trouble drawing the limbs.

Ah, just think in terms of math if you wanna do limbs. Each section of the arm (not counting wrist) are equal to each other and the length of the rib cage. Rib cage length and width is equal to the width of the skull x 2. width of skull x 2 (think of the width of the skull as a perfect circle). Sections of the legs (not counting feet) are equal to each other and the distance of the figure's shoulder to ass.

All of which, as beautiful as it is, isn't nearly as easy or intuitive to some of us as simply looking at a model, particularly when you start adding in poses, postures, foreshortening, and so on. But knowing as many of those rules and shortcuts as possible still makes sketching truckloads easier, I think.happypeepeehead wrote:Ah, just think in terms of math if you wanna do limbs. I try to do the math, I do ... -_- Yet somehow, more often than not, I mess up with limbs. *sigh*happypeepeehead wrote:Ah, just think in terms of math if you wanna do limbs. When in doubt, you have your own body to double check on what feels right. Put yourself into the position if possible. It's an odd feeling, but you can sense from your position things that you wouldn't notice from visually observing.
Honor: I agree completely, but the basics are essential regardless. When one has to figure out foreshortening, they'll work it as it best appears but make the proportions as need be.

Cheer up. Presumably the tentacle monsters know, so they endeavour to shed their virginity at the first opportunity. One may be slithering up right now behind you, people ...MaryxTyphus wrote:LeftTentacleGreen wrote:
