Our biggest readers are ourselves...
Let's not forget that word of mouth (or keyboard) is a powerful thing.
I told one of my friends about my comic, who in turn must have told one of HIS non-mutual friends, because now the usage statistics show that at least for one day my readers doubled (which granted is not very difficult, going from 20 to 40) because that non-mutual friend posted a link on her livejournal community. On second thought, maybe I should have prefaced this all with the fact that in fact pandering to those with voyeuristic online hobbies is a powerful thing. Not to bash on those 20 new readers visitors, of course, who may or may not come back.
The internet is a terrifying and wonderful place.

My readership has been slowly increasing. Every month I get more readers than the last. At first, I figured that the only people that would read my comic were a couple of my friends. Then my Dad turned out to be my most avid reader (my mom won't even look at it, she keeps coming up with new excuses, it's very sad). The friend I was figuring would follow it the closest checks it once ever couple weeks, at best. I shake my head in shame at him.
I don't have a tagboard; I fear them. I have received a total of three emails from people I don't already know who read my comic. As far as I know none of these people have comics of their own.
About half of my hits are from http://www.belfry.com ever since I got linked their a month or two into posting the comic. I'm not active enough on this forum to get many readers this way, so if any webcomickers actually read my comic strip, it's purely by luck.

I would love it, if other webcomic creators would read my comic, but I doubt if they do. My comic is more of a gag-a-day newspaper/magazine type. Most of today's web cartoonists despise my type of cartoon. I'm a dinosaur when it comes to what is popular. This doesn't mean that I don't have my small readership, give or take 50 visitors per day. I do receive some fan mail. I could be wrong, but I think most of my readership is 30yrs old or older.
I'm just not hip and I know it, but if any youger readers or cartoonists reads my cartoon, I do appreciate it and welcome it!

Well....
Considering that most promotional avenues for starting webcomic creators happen to be forums that are frequented by the web comic creating community...or advertising on spots like say...Blank Lable, or thewebcomicslist, which, again, seem to be read primarily by webcomicers...
You can see where the cycle sorta...becomes self consuming.

Unsolicited advice: be aware that comics shouldn't be your primary source of inspiration and themes, there's quite a lot of comics rehashing all over what they saw in other comics which is bad because, asides from chronical unoriginality, every new rehash loses something of what previous had.DOOM2099 wrote:You know why I started a webcomic? Because I read so many it made me wanna start my own. Seriously. Creativity feeds creativity.

As mentioned in another thread the Flying Spaghetti Monster strip I did garnered me at least one new reader so I consider the effort well worth it. In theory I should have more friends and locals reading my stuff, but of the few who have ever checked it out I think most of them don't get it. They probably have a hard time realizing the protagonists are only loosely based on my collaborator and myself and are not meant to actually be us any more than the big fat redneck sheriff is supposed to be the current local sheriff.
