Thanksgiving

Post by Pillywiggin »

I hate it. :x

The problem being that I am a skinny person with a slow metabolism and a low appetite. This will normally garner the occasional comment and frequent concern that I?m anorexic. It?s annoying enough normally, but at Thanksgiving everything is increased x10. The most likely result will be that I will spend most of Thursday night feeling ill after overeating in an attempt to appease people. Of course if I actually got sick then they?d think I was bulimic? This belief of theirs is especially ridicules (not to mention hypocritical) because I can?t even properly fit into my mother?s wedding dress, because her waistline when she was married was smaller then mine is now. *grumble grumble* :-?

I think I?m going shopping tomorrow before I go home and get a lot of baggy cloths so no one can tell what I look like.

And I don?t like turkey. :x

And I hate doing dishes.

And I hate doing dishes even more when it's for a meal I don?t even like. :x

So for the rest of you who celebrate this venerated day in remembrance of the coming of a group of white European religious conservatives to the New World where they proceeded to mooch off of the indigenous population, do you like it? Hate it? Why?

obviously there's a bit of me that hates it (there's a running joke among my people to call it "your welcome" day), however its not all that bad when you take away the fact it reminds one of how kindness can square on your ass for good, it also shows the good will that was shown, as well as it allows one to get reaquainted with family and friends whom you might not have seen in a while.

I usually go up to my nearest reservation if I'm not spending time at the homeland, and have to make my deal of frybread and corn (traditional dishes) and I tend to make vegan/vegitarian additions to the european style foods.

I still think take away the stigmia attached to it (reminded us Natives of the whites turncoating) its a great holiday, in itself about thinking back about all the good fortune you've been given and granting one the oppertunity to say thank you to the kind people who have made it possible.

It means nothing to me in the sense of the origins of it. However, it was awful nice of the Native Americans to help out the morons who landed and would have starved and frozen to death. That in itself isn't really holiday worthy in itself. Although I don't want to downplay how kind it was, because it really really was.

For me it's a chance for my family to get together and for one side of my family it's the only time I see them outside of Christmas. I like my mom and my dad's sides of the family so it's nice to get to see them. (My family goes to my Dad's mom's for Thanksgiving lunch, then we go to My Mom's parent's house for Dinner. All in all... LOTS of food that day.) Unfortunately it looks like this year I won't get to see much of either side of my family. Which is a shame, always Christmas though.

[Edit]
Oh and wheres the poll? It says there should be one but I don;t see it...

I don't think of thanksgiving as a day celebrating or remembering anything. I think of it as a day to get together with loved ones and have a nice meal, then a good evening.

Reasons that I could like Thanksgiving:
---a break from school.
---food.

Reasons that I could hate Thanksgiving:
---usually overshadowed by Christmas
---original meaning of the holiday is usually forgotten.

With that said, I could care less about Thanksgiving really. I'm not one of go crazy about any holidays, unless they can get me out of school for a few days.

It's sort of like a secular version of Christmas with no presents!

I think it's actually supposed to be our annual "Okay, now you can get ready for Christmas" thing. Without it, you'd see even more Christmas decorations immediately after Halloween!

Well, because of Thanksgiving, I get a good amount of school off, and I get to eat huge amounts of my mother's food. Unfortunatly, my metabolism is non-exsistant, so I gain lots of wait, but good food...mmmm.

Silly people, Thanksgiving is the day when we celebrate drawing turkey's by tracing around our hands. When will you people learn?

It's okay, I'm scrawny with an appetite that is apparently less than masculine, so I just don't eat much for breakfast or lunch and save as much room as possible for food. Plus, it helps to talk a lot so people look at your face and not your plate.

And on a positive note, I'm going home tomorrow for the first time since August! Screw you, Arkansas!

Just picked up a yummy spiral cut glazed ham to cook, plus the fixings for a pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, corn, and pineapple, with some fake wine for the meal.

The whole lot cost about $25. Not bad for a big production dinner for two with leftovers.

Thanksgiving. I've rather spend it with my husband and housemate and/or my immediate family. Less drama.

Thanksgiving two years ago I spent it with my "dad's" side of the family. Let's say I this redhead saw red and was about to walk hom from Tulsa to STL. Damn fucking inbred rednecks relatives. Still pissed about stuff that went down.

Mixed feelings. Thanksgiving itself, I love because of the message. A time where you just need to stop and reflect on everything great in your life, which more people should do more often.

Plus a big meal and family and break from school.

The whole time around Thanksgiving, I hate, and I blame Christians stealing more and more of the calendar for Christmas. At best they should be able to get away with 12 days, instead it became a month, and now a whole friggin season. Thanksgiving is now "Christmas, Part 1". And do you get your shopping done now? Oh no, plenty of sales but no buying of Christmas presents even though you'll decorate like mad for it. Gotta wait until the last minute. Now, I'm seeing the decorations coming out right after Halloween. That's absurd! You're SKIPPING Thanksgiving! I swear, if I ever see Christmas decorations before Halloween, the most awesome of holidays...I'm not legally responsible for my actions on grounds of insanity.

I think it's because you're all jealous Hannukah is 8 days. So you just started stealing more and more time to make up for it.....

In the words of John Stewart:
Last year I celebrated Thanksgiving the old-fashioned way. I invited everyone on the block to a great feast at my house. Then I killed everyone and took their land.
