I can't decide if I want in again. I don't read the comic I sent one to (I didn't get it most of the time...absurdity for absurdity's sake, it seems) and though I rather enjoyed the strip I was sent...it seemed grudging. As if I were beneath them.
I can understand if my comics isn't their cup of tea, obviously the other comic wasn't mine, but I read through their entire archive and tried to come up with something as fitting as possible. It was just kind of a bummer to see that they read three strips in and that was kind of the extent of their research.
Then again, it could be that these characters are my babies and I'm looking for any excuse not to turn them over to someone else and the people who sent me the comic are just the unfortunate recipients of an otherwise targetless ill feeling.
I did enjoy doing the strip I sent out, though. I like playing with other people's toys.

No?
Okay, the real deal is that the puppy was being sort of a dick. I don't know what that puppy's problem was.
Still no?
Um . . . OMG LOOK, MCDUFFIES IN A ZEBRA SUIT!

Well, you could just do fan-art. That's what I'm gonna' do, even if I get a comic I already read; guest comics rarely fit very well in tone with the actual comic. If someone does a guest comic for me, I'll post it on an off-update day, but then it's going into the fan-art section of the site rather than being left in the archives. I think that unless you're a regular reader, there's just little chance of you getting it "right," even if you dedicate yourself to the other person's entire archives.*Noise Monkey wrote:I can't decide if I want in again. Fan-art, on the other hand, is redrawing the other person's characters in your style, and hell, your interpretation. I love getting fan-art. I know the person didn't stress over it too much and I get to see their visual interpretation of my character.
*I'm still doing one for you OrigamiEmu, if you're reading this. That's a different case. And fan-art, but that's because I already had drawn that

Fan-art? I think I've heard of that.Escushion wrote:Fan-art, on the other hand, is redrawing the other person's characters in your style, and hell, your interpretation. I love getting fan-art.
Still, I've seen some so-called "fan-art", from this project last year, that was little more than "well, crap...I got THEM. Guess I'll slop something out and hope for next year..."
My problem is mostly with a lack of dedication by those who's hope of getting some face-time on a big-name comic didn't pan out.
I don't think that can be helped; it's really person-by-person. I just prefer fan-art over guest comics, both in giving and recieving (honestly, it makes me feel ill to imagine someone else writing Kadeo
). Whomever I get is going to recieve a piece of fan-art (or two, if I find myself liking the comic a whole lot, like I did with "Fade to Black") that I put a lot of work into to make it their character in my style, and I can only hope that they'll do the same.
Even if you don't like the other person's comic, I really don't see a reason to just crap something out. If you're signed up for this, you should put the same amount of effort into it as you do your own comic. But if the person you're partnered with doesn't do that, there's really not much you can do about it except say to yourself "At least I did it right."

Just another quick note about signing up for the ToG Secret Santa . . .
Apparently, the signup form doesn't like quotation marks . . . it deletes them and everything typed into the field after them for some reason. For example, when I put my name in as Roland "Jim" Lowery for the test run of the system, it listed me as simply Roland .
While it's a fairly easy thing to fix if you've got your full name listed on your website, it could still concievably cause problems. For now I would ask that those of you who use quotes as part of your name or your comic's name to please leave them out.
Much appreciated.

I'm debating if I have time to do them this year..... Though I did get the dead beat thing straightened out (they had me on the deadbeat list so I dropped them a line with a link to the gift art page on the site I had last year so they could see I did do it).... It's been hectic on my end though... Maybe I'll sign up just for one.

Uh... crap. A little late with me. The one for Coiling Spine; the name Darryl is supposed to be followed by "Escushion" Fabia. You can just change it to Escushion if that makes it easier. Sorry about that.Jim North wrote:Just another quick note about signing up for the ToG Secret Santa . . .

EDIT: Okay, I see you've got me as Darryl Fabia; whatever works

Yah, yours was the one that alerted me to the fact that other people need to be alerted to the fact, actually. Unfortunately, after I've approved an entry, editing that entry is beyond my jurisdiction . . . you'll have to take it up with Lady Lit if you want "Escushion" added in.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
