Son of Mac Maybe?

Post by Jkandra »

The thread in Ghastly's Ghastly Comic forum about halo299 considering a Mac has got me thinking. I am running a four year old Dell laptop and it's starting to give me problems. I think the video card is dying. So, now I could go back to Macs! My first computer was a Mac IIci (100 MB hard drive! 4 MB RAM! 13 inch monitor!) I DESERVE a new Mac!

But

The Dell isn't DEAD yet. So I'm bringing it to my office Monday to see if the IT guys work can see what's wrong. They are a Dell Certified shop so they should be able to at least tell me what's wrong. I alternate between "It's just some bad RAM corrupting the video driver" and "Oh man, the motherboard and video card are toast. Why is it still running?" I don't know which one to root for.

If I don't get my strips posted for next week you'll know it was the latter.

Hmmm, we do have that home equity loan just SITTING there...

Well the Dell is still on the fritz. The IT guys at work looked it over for almost two weeks and couldn't find anything wrong. It still isn't 100% but it works half of the time.

We had an emergency operation for our dog last week. She is 14 but has a lot of spunk left. That killed any plans for a new laptop, so I'll just have to try to fix this one. Anybody have a spare video card for an old Dell Inspiron 8500?

My Mac dreams are dashed!

Actually my dream of not paying $2,000 are still alive. I decided to get a "new" video card for my aging Dell to try to keep it alive. I say "new" because any replacement parts for this model are usually refurbished. I won an auction on eBay for a card and am now waiting for the delivery. $83 bucks (including shipping) on eBay sure beats $179 bucks (plus shipping) from Dell. We'll see if it all works out or if I need to beg time on my wife's or the kid's computer.

BTW, our dog is doing fine! Best decision we've made in a while. She looks like she has years left in her. We know we're on borrowed time with her now so we're enjoying every day with her for as long as she'll be with us. It may only be for a few more months but it may be for longer. She's more important than any computer anyway.

Looks like I'll get the video card today or tomorrow. Hope this works. Even if it does, it's time to start saving for the next computer.

I got the card and installed it and it works. Looks like me old laptop is still alive. (Yay! Boo!) It is nice to be able to trust it again.

Well, the new (used) video card has lasted about a year and is now starting to fail. I'll be looking at those rumored new MacBook pro models that are supposed to come out in September. I know PC laptops are cheaper every day but I really want to go back to Mac.
