P.S. Dominic Deegan is a poorly written sack of poor writing
Hey man, I just hate the writing in Dominic Deegan and like laughing at it. My hatred is pure and unsullied by awkward attempts at commercialism.Solitaire wrote:Oh, outstanding. Attacks on a more popular webcomic will make people think that yours is better. It's an accepted fact, in topsy-turvy land, y'know...Legendary wrote:psst...guys... Secret black text beneath today's rant!
Because putting the offensive comment as a throwaway gag in hidden text implies that I am focused more on hating Dominic Deegan than I am focused on the comic.Solitaire wrote:Maybe try relying on the comic's merits to get you by?
I set my ATM card's number to "0001" because I'm number one!
Well, there must be something taking focus away from the comic - why else would you be trying to pass off your Order of the Stick clone as better than Deegan?
No, wait, it isn't OotS, it's about console RPGs! Sorry, my mistake, that's completely original. Yeah, you're one of the bad boys of webcomic art, you are.

Webcomics - serious business.
Oh, I wouldn't say shoddy - after all, the art manages what it aspires, and looks almost exactly like Rich Burlew's. My problem occurs when I wonder how you're spending all the production time you save through knock-off art. Burlew reinvests it into the writing and dialogue, so where has yours gone?
If you are quite as half-assed as you seem about this comic, then lay off Deegan. There's some old saying here about glass houses...

A little thing I call "not making a living off of my comic." Seriously, are you trying to say that I can't make fun of movies because the video presentation I did for history class sucked? Or I couldn't dislike a band because I don't sing well in the shower? Because that's about how seriously I take my comic.Solitaire wrote:Oh, I wouldn't say shoddy - after all, the art manages what it aspires, and looks almost exactly like Rich Burlew's. Sometimes I just wake up in the morning and say, "My comic may suck, but at least I've never stolen a joke from Reader's Digest or drawn a panty shot of a dead woman." Then I go to either work or college, depending on what season it is.If you are quite as half-assed as you seem about this comic, then lay off Deegan. Not defending my own comic, I just really hate Dominic Deegan.

Ok, to the comics at hand....
Honestly I have been very bored with the free-form comic jam and await the return of the main comic with much zeal. This latest one had its merits, though.
Still, I'm glad you took some time off of it because it HAD grown a bit stale.

It shows. But the thing is - Cinematography: difficult. Singing: difficult.Legendary wrote:A little thing I call "not making a living off of my comic." Stick figure comics? Really easy. Stick figure comics that make fun of console RPGs? Really really easy. I mean, even if you aren't taking it seriously, how much effort does it take to find a new joke on an old subject? Or even a new spin?
So, wow. Someone else tries to excel and falls short of your narrow expectations. You either don't bother to try, or pretend not to be trying because you know what it looks like. So I wonder if the artist of Deegan is quaking in his boots at your negative commentry - or if perhaps he's too busy doing the convention circuit to standing ovations.
Or publishing his comic, to the pleasure of comic book readers the world over.
The boots thing is still possible, though.

Come on man, you registered on the forums of an obscure comic you don't even like simply for the purpose of defending a comic you do like against a joke placed invisibly under an update.Solitaire wrote:It shows. Do you really need to police the world of all those who have different tastes than you? I understand that he was criticizing the storytelling but what's it to you, anyway?

If he's so terrible because he makes a stick-figure comic about console RPGs, does that make me lower than scum for stealing jokes from him when I half-assed a short story making fun of console RPGs?
But seriously, he can make fun of whatever other comics he wants. Don't like it? Make your own stick figure comic making fun of his. You're entitled to the same rights.

I'm not annoyed by the fact that his tastes differ from mine - I'm not even that into Deegan. And I do read Legendary, because it's free and it makes me feel better about the fact that I don't have a webcomic of my own.theKOT wrote:Do you really need to police the world of all those who have different tastes than you? But what annoys me about Legendary's vendetta against Deegan is the hypocrisy of it. You don't like DominicDeegan because it's out of character? Set aside the fact that the comic isn't a fanfic and is therefore never out of character, let's talk about your own characters. Can Carnahan ever act out of character, considering that he doesn't actually have one? Seriously what is he supposed to be? Stoic? Cynic? The cool one? The cute one? What? And on the subject of shallow characterisations, what was up with this? Oops, I have to show they're friends! Now where did I leave my hammer of subtlety?
And don't try and tell me I have no right to take it up with Legendary - this is an open forum, that's what it's here for. At least I'm not badmouthing his comic to an unrelated audience who haven't even read it yet...
