The Simpsons Movie

Post by TheSuburbanLetdown »

So, did anyone actually watch this? What do you think?

I always have low expectations, so I enjoyed it. I prefer the animation of the show, since the movie looked a little too slick. Some of the humor also felt like it was too wacky and slap-sticky for me, as I prefer the sharp wit the show had during seasons 3-9. The focus of the movie and the show seems to be how much of an idiot Homer is, but I prefered the old Homer, who was a well-meaning but incompetent boob. But making this film was a daunting task, as the show had been on for 18 years and has already covered most of the themes that were present in the film. Overall, I liked it, but I feel it shoulda been better. I'll be purchasing the dvd.

It felt like a feature length episode, which is all you can ask for really. It didn't reinvent the wheel but I laughed a lot for the 70 minutes so I've no complaints. I also give it kudos for actually making me almost like Tom Hanks.

Aw, you don't like Tom Hanks? Now that I think about it, I don't know much about him outside of acting.

Yeah, it was essentially a long episode, which isn't a bad thing. It coulda been terrible if they tried too hard and made it more epic than it needed to be. I just wish it had more old-school Simpson wit and less "Homer is an idiot."

It's not anything particularly personal about the guy, it's just that he keeps getting involved in annoying twee films like Big or The Terminal or Apollo 13 (the hatred is kinda shared with that overrated hack Ron Howard though), not to mention being involved in the movie version of the goddamn Da Vinci Code. He did produce Band of Brothers, which was a wonderful series, so that and how funny his cameo was in the movie almost kinda makes up for it.

If the wording to any of this seems wonky, blame the 6 pints of cider I've had tonight ~stumbles off to bed~

I could use a Strongbow right about now.

Strongbow's not bad, but for mass market brands I prefer Woodpecker. Neither is a patch on Kopperberg though :D

My cider experience is rather limited, as I've only had Strongbow and Woodchuck. But as of this moment right now, I need a milk stout. Like, 4 of them. Now. In my mouth. Fast.

I guess this coffee will have to do.

I've no idea what it is, but milk stout sounds really rather disgusting...

You guys have derailed the thread with tales of drunkenness and debauchery before I've even seen the film!

And I concur. Never heard of milk stout before, but it does not sound pleasant.

I'm impressed. If I'd had six pints in one go, I don't think I'd be able to find the keyboard, much less type coherent sentences.

But dude! Milk stout is so good! I dunno if there's any milk in it, but it's really malty. Good if you like malt. It's called that because the lactose it contains is derived from milk.

I like to think I know a thing or two about beers, so this "milk stout" thing confused me. So I googled it, and here's why: The term is not used in the UK or Ireland, where such beers are called sweet stouts - and they are few and far between. An American site I checked lists a number of milk stouts, almost all American brews - only two British beers are on that list, and the breweries themselves call them chocolate stout and triple x stout, respectively. So yeah. No milk stout over here. In non-English-speaking Europe, the term stout isn't even used - we call that beer type a "porter". Oh, and I like malt beer - practically every Danish brewery makes malt beer. No lactose in those, though.

Wait, what was this thread about again?

We ought to have a thread for discussing alcohol.

I still need to see it. :( Yes I know I'm a very bad person.

I keep forgetting how long that show has been around for. 18 freakin' seasons. Such an enduring feat to accomplish.

And as for Mr. Hanks, I find his work to be really good. Apollo 13, Forrest Gump, Castaway, and a few others. Really good stuff.

Yeah, Forrest Gump was a great movie.

I remember a paper someone wrote for a class once explaining how Forrest Gump is a cautionary tale on how conservatism prospers, and liberalism fails. Forrest, the conservative, takes things slowly and ends up propspering in the end, while Jenny, the liberal, lives a life of self-destruction and dies for it. Dunno if I really agree with it, but it's an interesting point.

As for the Simpsons, I reccommend it as a long-time fan. Still, I feel it should've been better. I think much of that has to do with the fact that the series is indeed 18 years old and much of the punch is lost since it treads on familiar ground.

Edit: yay i make typo

That is an interesting point. Again I don't think I agree with it either.

As for the Simpsons losing its punch, agree with you there too. The humor now is all based off how dumb Homer is. Which is okay, I like it. But the humor of the past was more predicated on good sharp writing, in my opinion a lot better. But I understand why its the way it is now. Sooner or later you're just gonna run out of ideas that you haven't already covered.

I'm surprised at you Sublet, for not remembering to tell your fans about the bet you made with McDuffies, here:

NOW YOU'VE DONE IT! OH GOD!

Okay, this drawing has nothing to do with the comic, just so everyone knows. Well, the thread explains it.
