"I rather enjoy Robert Crumb. His career spans several decades, so he has developed a number of different styles that he can whip out like a tool from a Swiss army knife. After a while his self-loathing thing can get a little old, but one can't deny his influence on the comic world. Plus he can draw incredibly well when he wants to."
Perhaps I'm just predisposed to dislike him, since my ex-boyfriend idolized this self-proclaimed bohemian outcast, so tired of his human counterparts. I watched that movie he was in, where he talked about drawing stuff he hated and he visited his brother who couldn't get it up anymore. He killed himself towards the end of the film, then Crumb defected to France or... somewhere. At least he was honest about his objectifying of women. I'll give him that.
I can't help but like the way Crumb illustrates. It's always unfortunate when the people we admire for their skill are less than pleasant in their personal lives. All you can do is try to separate the two, and focus on the skill only. If that's even possible.
The same can be said of Dave Sim. Cerebus is supposed to be one of the greatest comics ever in terms of scope, complexity, and execution. But many avoid it because Sim is supposedly a raging misogynist.
Orson Scott Card's another one who's opinions might upset some people, but his novels are pretty entertaining. I think he's against gay marriage and whatnot as well, which is strange considering the Ender series dealt with equality between different alien species. Go figure.
Yeah, I find that in music, if you can't stop concentrating on how much of a dick the artist is, listening to the music becomes like torture and you have to stop. It completely ruins the experience.
The fact that Axl Rose is a jagoff runs pretty consistent with his music, so that doesn't bother me at all. Really, an artist's character really shouldn't be involved in your opinion of the artist's work. Sometimes the asshole can go places in the human experience a decent human being won't, and that can be a great advantage. In the end, it's the work that matters.
But now that I'm looking at it fresh instead of staring at it all evening, I have some tiny issues with it. I may fix these small problems, or just get on with my life and start the next page. I've been kidna out of my game the last 2 weeks and need to start rocking again.
