Ren-Faire Friends and goers

The lives of two self-proclaimed geek/gamer chicks as told by themselves. Sadly, we don't have to exaggerate much from reality.

Ren-Faire Friends and goers

Post by Jaded Deceit »

I have need of a professional tailor to make me a custom garb.
I am in need of a professional leathersmith for several sheath/harnesses.
I need a metalugist(i know that is spelled way wrong) for swords/throwing knives.

If you know any professionals in these fields for the love of god help me.

Thank you.

Well...our beloved leader, Kristy, does costuming. Perhaps she may have an idea or two or knows someone who might be of help? Just a suggestion...

There's also a nifty magazine called "Renaissance". I sometimes buy it off the stands at Barnes & Noble. This magazine always has all sorts of ads for ren fair costuming and swords. Maybe that might be of help.

I haven't checked but I imagine there's lots of this stuff online.

I make my own stuff, but am in no way close to a professional at it. I'm held together with pins and glue half the time!

Google the intarwebs and check out ebay. You'll be surprised how many custom costume and replica things you can find online.

Also, the Renaissance magazine is a good place to start. And don't forget to hit up your local RenFaire.

My 'local' renfair is 4 hours away. :shifty: I'll see what I can find on ebay.

The trouble is, I am wanting to make it FOR Ren-faire. I will check out the magazines in B&N as you have suggested. And as far as the net goes and this might sound crazy, but I was not able to google a tailor who dabbled in the art of costuming. Everything looked WAY too professional if you know what I am saying. But thanks for the tips and hints!

Pshh.. so's mine. And I've driven farther for much sillier things. XD

Weeeell.. if you don't want it to be too professional... and I'm assuming by this you meant they cost too much?... try searching for costume tutorials and do it yourself.

No, I mean that I want it professional, it is just that the people I was looking at made stuff like new fashion trends for shows like "The OC" or they made strictly Elizabethan styles etc. I need to find someone who can make it look like the model I have.

Basically just google search SCA weapons, ren faire leatherwork, or larp armor. SCA especially. They would definitely know where to get some good shit.

Normally that wouldn't stop me, but I don't have a car anymore so riding a bus or duping a friend into taking me is a little bit of a stretch, but once I get my Motorcycles license I should be fine.

I hit the Jackpot!!
This place I found in Renaissance Magazine (thank you Dennis) just had one of their manufacturers buy the rights to create Assassin's Creed Items and are expecting functional replicas around June. They also said that they would make all the leather works stuff and clothing themselves.

I am so happy right now.

Yay! The librarian was useful!!! ~suddenly breaks into a happy dance and feels silly :shucks: ~

Yeah, I'm not a regular reader of RENAISSANCE Magazine but when they have a good article or two, I'll get a copy.

I'm also curious to concoct a ren fair costume of my own. The fair that I go to each summer is a very modest 2 1/2 - 3 hours away...I'd say it's 2 1/2. I went with Redtail a couple summers back.

However, since it can sometimes get REALLY hot here in July/August, it may not be too much fun running around in a full costume in 80-90 degree heat. So, we'll see...yeah, this stuff can get pricey, too, but there are ways to stay within a budget.

***And don't sell yourself short, Kristy! (Hugs!) Yeah, TRUE ren fair costumes are indeed a whole different beastie than a homemade cosplay costume but the few of yours that I've seen have been pretty damn good. I doubt I could ever concoct a Deedlit or Saber costume on my own like that...although, I'd certainly look mighty strange wearing them (Heehee! XD )

Anyway, good luck with the costuming, Frank! If I manage anything by Ren Fair time, I'll post a pic here.

Dennis in a Saber costume? ooh hot...lol.
The company can be found at:

http://www.Bytheswordinc.com

And I am "making" my own costume for Ren-Faire, it is just that the Altair La Ahad costume requires Leathersmithing 84 and I am a modest 3. Also Weaponsmithing level 53. I have 0 ranks there. Then there is the tailoring itself. Required, 15. I have 2.... And since I want it to be perfect...::shrugs::

All I want is the hood and I fail at sewing. I usually get a friend to do it for me when they make their costumes. I just help.

Thankfully, Kristy is far cuter in a Saber costume than I would be. :shucks:

Although, I'm still periodically haunted by the vision of the dude I saw dressed in a Sailor Moon costume at a Toronto comicon I attended a few years back. :ick: :ick:

Crazy Canadians!

As to my sewing skills, I can sew on a button and that's pretty much it. Any costuming I attempt would have to be made for me or purchased off a rack.

Dennis! You should totally come Ren-Fairing with us this year^^. It would be a neat weekend getaway for you in which you get to traipse around watching Drunken cackling old crazy guys try to fire bows at a target that apparently exsist somewhere BESIDES down range.

Tons of fun!

Did someone say drunken guys firing bows? Thats definitely sounds like something I can get into. :D Too bad I've never been to a Ren- Fair or have the slightest idea when and where they are occur. Oh well... time to kick back some beers and play with sharp objects.
