The Chronicles of Narnia

Post by Dennis Kininger »

Anyone see this movie yet?

I'm currently re-reading the books. I last read them in grade school...before many of the members here were born (Yeah, I'm "old" :P ). I enjoyed them as a kid and I'm liking them as an adult but I think I like Tolkien a bit more than Lewis.

Anyway, I plan to catch the movie this weekend and wondered if anyone else has seen it.

Me, Cathe, and Steve went to see it the day it came out and it was AWESOMES! So very good. And then Steve and I, being art nerds, had to discuss how the animals were superbly modeled and animated and the lip sync was just dead on like instead of thinking, "oh look, another cg talking animal" we thought, "Holy crap, that lion is speaking to me". I haven't read the books since middle school (I really oughta reread them soon) but I'm hoping they'll do all seven. I hear they're already working on a next one.

Is it wrong to think Jadis is cool? ^_^

Yes Kristy... yes that is wrong. I'm glad Aslan finally got her back for throwing part of a lamppost at him. ^_^ She was kinda cool in the movie though. And centaurs kick ass!!

I've been geeking out majorly since the movie came out because everyone wants a copy of the books now and no one really knows anything about them. I've read them about five times since 2nd grade, so I feel qualified to explain them to parents. And I like Lewis A LOT. Tolkien's also spiffy, but Lewis will always be my favorite Inkling. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THEY MAKE THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER!!! SQUEEE~!

Hi Kristy,

Yeah, I think Jadis is cool in the books...she's so wonderfully mean! I liked her in the BBC version too.

Yes, the books are worth rereading. I haven't read them in 25-30 years (GASP!) and I'm catching lots of stuff I'd forgotten.

I don't know as I'm an art nerd but I love good animation, so I'm looking forward to seeing the new movie tomorrow...I've gotta shovel out my house after work tonight, so I'll be busy then.

Snow...whee!

Heh! Yeah, that wasn't nice about the lampost. Centaurs do indeed rule, too!

I've noticed some increase in interest in the books here at the library where I work. They're checked out more than normal but just kids have been asking me for them (Which is cool but why no adults?). I'm 39 and I'm still enjoying the books. There's some interest in the BBC adaptions, which we have on VHS...the few people who know the BBC version exists. I'm glad there's interest in Narnia at bookstores.

I'm not sure why I haven't read Lewis more often. I tend to read everything and I have many interests, so Lewis got neglected. I read The Hobbit and the Rings books every few years...I read them when the movies were out and I'll probably read them again in another few years. Tolkien seems to get the better PR.

I like Lewis. I read the Narnia books in grade school and didn't pick them up again until now. I've got other Lewis stuff on my shelves at home (Screwtape Letters!) and read him in college...Narnia kinda fell by the wayside.

A DAWN TREADER movie would be very cool but I wanna see the new movie first.

Well, guess that's all. I'll share some post movie comments soon.

i used to read all 7 books every summer from age 8 to around 15 & i just re-read the lion, the witch & the wardrobe a few years ago. i've got a friend who's never read them 7 after she gives me my lost dvds back, i'm gonna let her borrow my box set. she & i (and her boyfriend) went to a midnight showing of the movie & it was enjoyed by all. i'm suposed to maybe see it again tomorrow night (it depends on if i get out of work on time or not).

Well, I'm enjoying the books once again after way too many years. I can't believe I let so much time go by since I first read them as a kid.

I usually dust off my Tolkien every few years, I'll add Lewis to the list once I finish his Narnia books.

I saw the movie on Saturday night and loved it.

Yes, it greatly expands on Lewis's fairly short book but the whole story is literally onscreen and the new sequences only serve to enhance everything, not pad it out for the sake of the movie running time.

The four unknown actors playing the Pevensie kids all do a great job.

The effects are amazing. If a lion could actually speak I'm sure that's what it would look like. I was also digging the wolves...I loved their growly, sinister voices.

Jadis was wonderfully evil and cool...until she got what she deserved from Aslan.

Liam Neeson as Aslan's voice was pretty good but I think Sean Connery has a perfect lion voice.

Yes, the Centaurs were very cool too!

So, overall, I was very pleased with this movie and I plan on seeing it again.

Nehh.. Sean Connery was the best dragon. Liam Neeson was a rockin' lion.

Yeah, that's true.

Connery was very cool as a dragon and Neeson did a great job as Aslan.

Can't have one actor take all the spots for talking creatures and all that.

I mean, they could've gone with some obvious casting and picked James Earl Jones as Aslan.

I don't think Neeson has ever done voice work (I'm probably wrong and I'm too lazy to look up Neeson's acting credits), which gave Aslan some special qualities...Neeson doesn't have a deep booming voice but he has a very distinctive one.

Well...I think what they were trying to do was set up the movie: WWII is going on, London is getting bombed, the 4 kids get shipped off to the country, etc...

That was all nice to get the movie going but I began enjoying myself when Mr. Tumnus walked on the scene.

Okay, I'm like really jealous now.

I'd have enjoyed seeing Mr. Tumnus' statue.

Yes, I need to get to more cons but seldom have the cash to travel to them.

I've read the books about 100 times each (not an exaggeration) so I was very excited and the movie didn't disappoint. Jadis was the best, and I got terribly emotional over Peter's hands, which has something to do with being the mother of two boys, one of whom is growing like a weed.

I need to take hubby to it but my oldest is too young for that kind of violence. I think it was more violent than the whole LOTR trilogy by far.

A hundred times each! :o

Yes, as a reference librarian, that feat even impresses me! *Bows in homage to the mighty Cyl*

I'm only on my second read-through of the books.

Yeah, Jadis was cool. Aslan was cool. I also liked Mr Tumnus and I also heart the centaurs.

That was an interesting comment about Peter. Since I'm not a mom of boys, I saw the movie a bit differently than you but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Was it more violent than the LOTR trilogy? Well, the LOTR movies contain TWO battles across the three movies. So that's a matter of opinion.

I found the Narnia battle interesting because it got across the point Lewis makes in the book about war being horrible and senseless.

Yeah, the movie is a bit much for a young child to take in and probably too long for a young child to sit through but I think it'd be worth it to introduce a child to the Lewis books and this movie (plus whatever sequels follow) when the child is a bit older and can better appreciate/understand the material and get what Lewis was trying to say.

I'm not a Dad but that's my take on it all.

nak

don't be too impressed, as 1) they are short; and 2) i read at an insanely fast pace.

i took both kids to it (and fredling was there in his car seat) after my best friend with kids the same age recommended it. they sat totally still (a feat in itself) and *loved* it. slater's favorite part was the train (duh) and sara's was "the closet with the pretty dresses" (fur coats).

i guess i thought it was more violent b/c some of the violence was perpetuated upon children. off the top of my head, there are violent skirmishes in each book and full-on war battles in three of the books.

and yes, you're totally right about the war bringing the "senseless" point across. saving private ryan does that well, too. we'll save that one for much later, though. heh.

Yeah, they are short books. I read fast, too, but I tend to get drawn into several books at once so it takes me longer to get through stuff.

I'm glad your kids made it through the movie and enjoyed it...and sat still too.

There is indeed some measure of violence in all of the Narnia books but the last thing they do is glorify it. That's a worthy message to get across to any age: adults and kids.

Saw the movie, loved it!

I half expected the voice of Aslan to be James Earl Jones.

Cool!

I'm glad you liked it.

I saw it for the second time last weekend...I always catch new things I missed the first time.

Yeah, James Earl Jones would've been cool as Aslan but he's got that kinda obvious voice for a lion.

I liked the job Liam Neeson did.

I'm off to go see KING KONG for the second time tonight.
