I'll look around for those ROD figures. I recently ordered a Yomiko statue from PREVIEWS but it won't be out until June.

Yeah, it's been fun watching the anime again. Anita's a blast because she likes milk and I do, too...plus she's pissed all the time.

Nenene's also fun...yeah, chicks with attitude rock!

I have noticed that the series sort of changes tone when Yomiko gets into the series...it's still fun, though.

As before, this book consists of four sweet and enjoyable tales featuring the Paper Sisters: Michelle, Maggie and Anita.

One tale has Maggie assuming strange personalities from a book called, "The 24 Faces of Maggie Mui".

A second tale has Maggie and Anita inventing an exercise plan for book lovers when Michelle suddenly gets chubby.

There's a cute story with Anita stuck in a fantasy world full of characters from children's books.

The final story has the Paper Sisters in a rematch with Lily, the book thief, as they become bodyguards for a teenaged author.

Lots of nice art and some fun stories make this another enjoyable book.

While I enjoyed the R.O.D. TV series, part of me wishes more of these charming stories were animated, instead of what actually was.

One thing you will notice: the author they are bodyguarding is Hisami, Anita's schoolmate from R.O.D the TV. I saw her and was like "YAY it's HISA!" ^__^

Yup! I was pleased to see her too.

I liked her friendship with Anita in the TV series so it was neat seeing a different version of Hisa in the book.

I liked how they portrayed the hardships of their friendship during the British libraries control of media. I mean they sorta started to grow up and seem a bit distant. I think it was to display the lonliness of being a paper master and explains why the three are so close^^.
Maybe I read a bit too much into stuff, but that is where great stories come from is each person's imagination.

That's very true. There wouldn't be great stories without imaginations.

I liked their friendship in the TV series but I didn't quite see it the same way as you...which is fine, of course.

I think Anita was a bit lonely and she wanted a normal friendship with a girl her own age. Both girls were sad when Anita had to leave. This was done nicely in the series.

I was referring to when she came back after the British library had pretty much brainwashed Japan. And Hasi seemed to be a little aloof towards Anita.( It may have been just that the brain-washing had affected her so, but I felt that it was more than that)

Well, I bought the final READ OR DREAM book during the Pittcon festivities in April and I finally got around to reading it...so here's a review:

And so the READ OR DIE/READ OR DREAM "saga" comes to end with this very sweet final volume of the "Read or Dream" manga.

Yes, I'll miss it.

Anyway, I enjoyed this last book quite a bit. There are several differences between this and the ROD anime but I enjoyed how this manga went deeper into the very nice friendship which develops between Anita and Hisa.

Hisa is just a fellow student in the anime but she's a young author in the manga and the paper sisters' task is making sure Hisa finishes her book without any pesky boys distracting her.

Yeah, we're more trouble than we're worth but at least we're good for killing bugs or getting stuff off high shelves (LOL!)

I also enjoyed the story delving into how the Paper Sisters got together...this was similar to the anime but not quite the same.

Yomiko's final appearance in the last tale was a nice touch.

Overall, this was a sweet and delightful book and I liked the series a bit more than the READ OR DIE manga. Both are good, I just liked this one better.

I have read somewhere about ROD novels but I assume they're not translated or released in America...yet. I would enjoy seeing more material with these characters.

I could also finally write my ROD fan fic idea, too.

Of course you know I'm still jealous of you for finding that nifty ROD button when we were at Pittcon.

I can certainly sympathize about wanting something and having to do something else...like pay bills or buy food, etc...

I'm glad you liked my review...yes, I enjoyed READ OR DREAM quite a bit, very nice series. I hope those ROD novels I've heard about get released here.

Yomiko came in her own box which looked like a book.





Here's an inside pic of Yomiko in her box. Yes, the insides of the box look like bookshelves.

For some reason, Yomiko came with three spare pairs of glasses but the ones she's wearing are pretty secured to her face and I don't plan on taking them off for whatever reason.

I also like the base she's standing on because it looks like a a big pile of swirling paper and makes the Read Or Die theme music pop into my head.

Yes, I'm very pleased with the statue of Yomiko and I would love to have statues of the Paper Sisters but I've never seen any.

I have plastic figurines (or inaction figures) of all three Paper Sisters. I have seen the nice statues of Yomiko, Nancy (aka Ms Deep), Michelle Cheung, and Maggie Mui. I keep telling Maggie I will go back and buy her, but so far I have not. I visit her about once a month though. ^_^;

I love the box Yomiko came in! And I would imagine that the extra glasses are: a pair for Nenene, a pair from Donnie, and an extra just in case.

So far, the ONLY bit of ROD merchandise I've ever seen is the Yomiko statue and I'd love to have more figures and stuff from the series...yes, I need to get out more ~cries~

Yeah, I love Yomiko's box, too! I'm gonna keep it for whenever I have to move and I'll have a way to pack her...plus the box is pretty damn cool!

I'd love to have Yomiko on my desk at work but I figure someone would either take her or the boss would object so I have Yomiko on my bedroom dresser guarding my books from harm.

I like your theory about Yomiko's extra glasses. Yes, I keep a spare pair nearby...just in case, too.

It was at the anime store before I even started watching R.O.D., but it's so well done that when I saw the show I was like, "Hey, the anime store has a figurine of her!" It's really cool but it's still about $130 and I don't know if it's any cheaper anywhere else (like ebay).

Sort of off topic but the figurine I have been wanting lately is Mireille from the anime series NOIR. Unfortunately it's pretty rare since Mireille is not the most popular character in the anime. The anime shop had it for I think $130 or $140 but part of it was missing so Joy didn't get it for me for my birthday.

Unfortunately, there are absolutely NO anime stores anywhere near me ~Cries ~ yes, I live in the pop cultural armpit of central New York State. I'm sure Joy recalls the otaku-deprived conditions around here from when she lived in the area.

I got lucky and spotted the Yomiko statue in a Previews magazine at the comic shop. I just went "Holy Crap! It's Yomiko!" and I immediately filled out an order form for her. I don't know if I'd pay 130 bucks for a Nancy figure...Yomiko was 33 bucks...but I'd be curious to see what she looks like.

I also never knew there were NOIR figurines. Having a Mireille and Kirika would be nice.

The only place I ever see figurines are at the one or two conventions a year I manage to attend or in a Previews magazine at the comic shop.

I didn't know you were a NOIR fan Dennis! You really shouldn't get me started on NOIR though. That's my favorite anime and I could talk about it forever if given the chance! If you are interested maybe we could start another thread about it. I don't want to derail the R.O.D. thread more than I already have. ^_~

From what I gather, there are a few Yomiko figures out there. $120 - $130 sounds like the price for a an actual plaster cast statue. My Yomiko is resin and small (She's about 10 inches high), which is probably why it was so cheap...the comic shop also gave me a small discount as I've been a long time customer there.

I am indeed a NOIR fan! In fact, I'm curious to dig out the series and watch it again as I haven't seen it in a while. Perhaps I'll start this weekend. So, yeah, if you want to start a NOIR thread, feel free or else I'll start one.

I don't have any new anime festivals scheduled at the library where I work but I think I'll show some NOIR at the next one.

I've also never seen MADLAX, which is by the same creators as NOIR, isn't it? I'm curious to see the series and hope to sometime.
