Starting at the bottom :
Everyone that is not interested in an Art or Technical field in anyway
This group is the main focus of discontent for the next few sub groups listed. This is the people who are " Too cool for that shit".
The friend
This is the outlet for the "nerdy" groups to have contact with socialites and others not interested in such frivolties as previously stated. They will be there to defend your honor against "cool people". Even at their own expense but they do not participate regularly in some hobby.
The dork
There are two different types of dorks. There are the intolerables and the tactless. The Tactless person is what I would call an infiltrator and are usually the most likely to publicly humiliate you in order to save themselves. The dork knows what D and D is and might even know the basics. They act like they play all the time to you, and then when the socialites come near he will sherk his role and if they think that they might be outed, they will burn you to avert attention and swear against the hobby in question.
The intolerable knows what the hobby is, try to play, and they are even completely open to the world about it. This is the person doesn't know enough about what the hobby is and can be a little frustrating to have around. They also watch mainstream anime and try to pass it off as cool. They handle stuff they know nothing about and usually annoy the shit out of you. Everyone who games knows that while you may be a hobbyist, you don't go around screaming your a nerd or geek. This intolerable person will brag about it making all Nerds look bad and also making the hobby seem worse than it is because of their lack of knowledge and lack of social skills.
The nerd
The Nerd has many forms but the three most prominent are The gamer, The Role player, or the techie.
The gamer for sure has the best hand eye coordination and has mastered the art of playing it to the bone. A gamer has calloused thumbs of gold and can easily switch from playing final fantasy on the nintendo to slaying some noobs on rainbow six on the xbox. These gamers even play the stupid games to give their opinion because if it sux, the store manager at the local game store needs to know not to push it. The gamer supports local game dens by spending money there and even bringing in friends to help "keep the pad goin' " The Gamer is, of the nerds, the most easily adaptable to the world of cool people because thank god for the entertainment industry their is seriously a game for every type of person. The gamer also seems to usually enjoy anime as it has similar violence or art. Plus most games are made in Japan.
The Role player is an interesting breed being the most artistic and quite possibly the most deceitful group amongst the Nerds. They take on the role of another personality in order to do tasks that they otherwise would never experience, making them great pretenders. The Role player has spent tons of money on Books to sharpen their characters ability to kill the next encounter the fastest and most artistically within the parameters of the game mechanics. They know what the term metagaming is and will artfully destroy your character for doing so. These nerds must haggle and argue and think to try and beat out the DM's creation. In a RPer's world anything can happen. These guys will not let out who they are because be it a LARP or P and D game, they have been the target of religious groups for a long time. Most any RP'er knows who Gary Gygax and Lord British are.
The techie. This fine sir likes games for one reason. They like to show how much faster they can overclock their computer in order to make their loot macro beat out that of a bastard camper trying to snatch treasure spawns. They also love to identify with the Geek groups as the techie is most likely going to be the one to earn geek status through his hobby because it can be done most easily as a profession. The techie will give you advice on how to best fix your computer and even give you some old hardware(to them old, to everyone else top of the line). These guys are the most overlooked group for nerd haters because this group can operate in social functions fairly well and even talk about there hobby and it is more complex then people want to wrap their minds around, so they just accept that he must know what he is talking about and that it sounds "cool".
The Nerd-core
There are many forms of nerd core and these are the elitist of nerds. Those of the nerdcore mind set have some if not a ton of knowledge in several of the nerd related categories. A nerd core member can play a video game, then go to a RPG session, and finish the day working on getting their computer working properly. Unfortunately these folks, while usually hyper-intelligent, tend to lack social skills in no fault of their own. They are so busy trying to level up or beat the next boss that they overlook the fact that there is a bigger world out there. Nerd core members are fortunate to find each other and will often rely on each other for support, and good gaming advice. They are up for doing just about anything.
Geeks
Geeks are the top of the teir. They have done all of it and usually have the proof in the form of an old box of magic cards or action figures. Perhaps even some books related to paladium. They have retired from most of the get togethers because they have moved on to making money with what they know. As before, a Geek was most likely a techie who excelled at tech school and became a specialist. They make money doing what they love. Now, this is just for computer techies either. There are gamers who get into the industry through their love of art. There are RP'ers who can make money by hosting large LARPS as it is strenuous. The geek has not only finished with the youthful phase of gaming but they have also gotten over the fear of being hurt or rejected for their passion. They are open about who they are and accept that people will say what they will.
Now for all this, there is stuff that is to be said about them all. Most can quote about evry movie they have ever seen.( It appears that monte python and george lucas targeted these folks specifically). They all might have played a fad( pogs, magic the gathering, etc. ) and pushed for it's return, given that it is out( pogs ).
Know that there are exceptions to every rule and that these are mostly guidelines to know where one would stand if he or she thought she was a "nerd" or a "geek". These folks are usually in the closet in their early years as they fear social death and will eventually come out and know that there was something to be concerned about, but the friends you make will generally have similar interests and wouldn't abandon you even if they don't. There are others still who are popular and still enjoy going to D and D on the weekend.
Now where does Franklin fit in?
Well, hopefully you enjoy my analysis of the " Cool to Geek " spectrum and would like discussion on perhaps changes or even to know where you feel you fit in.
I may be cool and have a magnetic personality, but I am for sure the epitome of a Nerd. I know I am Nerd-Core and proud of it.
