Ugly Girl

Post by Nanda »

Last night, a fan of Ugly Girl bought me a three month subscription to deviantART, and it suddenly occurred to me that I've been updating the comic for almost four months here at Keenspace, and that maybe it would be alright to pitch it now. So here's the link: http://nanda.keenspace.com

Constructive criticism is expected and appreciated, the only thing I ask is that you not be especially mean about it. 3 out of 5 Keenspace guys think I'm pretty cute, and will be more than willing to poke you with pointy sticks if I promise to show them my boobs.

I like the humor of your strip. It has a nice, subdued tone. I also like the mockery of how self-labeled "popular" people are the cruelest ones around.

The art, even though it is based on stick figures, is very unique, and you use a variety of poses. Very nice.

Nice job!

My only suggestion would to be sprucing up the site a little bit, but I guess that would be too ironic considering the title of the piece.

I know... Popular kids are so cruel! (They really are... especially to me...)

Getting back to the subject, your drawings are simple, but they are unique. I like your style, also.

Good job on the comic! Good luck on further comics ^^

I am a big fan of Ugly Girl. In the great ocean that is web comics it's refreshing to see a really unique style and character. There is something instantly likeable about your main character, which is evident by all the fan art you have received. Your writing is nice as well. You could have easily turned this into a strip about a poor nerd who never has any luck; instead you have created a character that anyone who wasn

I have no doubt you'll be one of the "household names" in the web comic world.
My ex-husband called me "ugly girl" before he found out I was a man.

Anywherebuthere..... OH FOR #$^&@$ !!! Her Bio puts her HIGH SCHOOL!!!! CAN you possibly BE THAT DESPERATE for a date!!!!

OK At first I thought , "another stick figure strip..." I must admit, the humor is really, really good! It's a little "dark" in that Ugly Girl will never win and only people who don't matter care about her....but the premise is growing on me. (I DO like "happily Ever After" ending... yes I know... I'm seeing a therapist about it... she has me savaging chocolate bunnies...but I digress.)
So far it's a pretty short story...I'm curious as to where you'll take this and if you can stay as sharp on the humor in the next couple of months.
(As long as she doesn't go out with the Anywherebuthere dude...)

Good Luck

Wow... This is all a lot more posotive then I thought it was going to be. I'm pleasantly shocked.

anywherebuthere: I signed up.

They matter. (She just won't admit it.)

Steve & Corgan: *Hugs*

The Neko & DC: Thank you very much. I'll see what I can do about the site's look... It's tough, because I don't have a lot of html experience yet.

LibertyCabbage: Uh... ok.

I really like this one! It's cute in that angsty sort of way, but we all know that angst is FUN!

I enjoyed it very much. There's a lot of substance behind those stick figures. The art almost turned me off at first, but once I started reading I got very interested in the characters.

I'm not usually a fan of the "mopey, alienated high-school student surrounded by cruel, beautiful people" web-comic genre (yes, it's a genre), but I like yours. Go figure.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

What is it about UG that sets it apart, in your opinion? It would be helpful to know what to avoid doing.

I really like ugly girl and it's on my favourites list on onlinecomics.net. :D It was actually the stick figures that attracted me at first... I just like the simple art and humour, the stick figures are very expressive somehow.

You're one of the few comics I've seen that got popular really fast, and it's definitely earned the attention. I especially like how you color it in markers. There's something refreshing seeing a comic done all by hand. You've got a very refreshing comic in it's honesty and humor. Keep up the good work. :D
