Synaptic Misfires - comic pitch

Post by Synaptic-misfires »

Synaptic Misfires - follow my random thoughts displayed as comics as I invest about 8 minutes a day in my journey to becoming the greatest artist of all time! Eventually.

Yep, the art is terrible, something that's discussed more than once within the comic itself. That's sort of what it's about, and ninjas, a chronicle of my journey. I discovered my total lack of artistic talent months ago though I've been a no talent hack for WAY longer than that, yet am able to convince myself of the most amazing things sometimes (also discussed in the comic, heh) so decided to become the greatest ever. Tongue in cheek and rambling for the most part, but it has two (yeah, count 'em, TWO) story arcs. Now featuring a single frame update every Wednesday featuring the breakout stars of the 00's, worm and big head guy! To see it as it's meant to be seen, start at the First Comic and ride it downhill from there. Constructive criticism cheerfully accepted, unconstructive criticism cheerfully incorporated into the comic to make you look silly, HA!

Fun for all ages that can tolerate the occasional "dammit", cause that's about as racy as it gets.

Here's the start of the first story arc . . .

I don't want to ignore your post, because I did go through and read your stuff. At the same time, after reading three pages of discussion over what font to use as a comic, I really wanted to stop altogether. Your later works are better, but the initial turn-off from the beginning overshadows the overall strip (which is a shame, because a lot of it is pretty funny).

Some of the comic made me laugh, which is pretty cool. The art is slowly progressing, but the writing seems to move back and forth between very funny and repetitive. Self referential jokes are great, but when it seems like every comic relies upon them for humor it becomes a crutch. That aside, the discussion of comic progression as a theme isn't a bad one, just either focus entirely on that, or use it only occasionally.

There is a lot of potential here, specifically in your writing. I'd put more effort into your art if you want to hook readers. This dosen't mean you have to have the most amazing or complicated images in the history of man, but take a look at the better known minimalist MSPAINT comics (like Cyanide and Happiness: http://www.explosm.net/ ). These guys don't practice high art, but by using basic shapes in creative ways are able to emote a lot of situations and expressions.

If you want to ignore the images, or stay the way your are, perhaps you should look into more of a humorous blogging medium, rather than webcomics. The images seem to be mostly asides from your text, not really necessary to understand the jokes. This isn't bad, but isn't really what I would expect from a web comic. I don't doubt that you would be successful in either Blogging or Webcomics, if you apply yourself.

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback, SevenCurrents! No excuses, but here's a little background.

The strips about what font and font style to use were made while I was trying to figure out what font and font style to use. True story. They're funnier if you read them out loud in a high squeeky voice during church or a school assembly. Also true. And yeah, they're not the greatest, but I put up all the strips I make in order, so years from now when I'm only semi terrible I can still win 'most improved' cause the first few sucked so hard, lol.

If only one made you laugh, it's worth my time, seriously. Or comically. Something like that. And the art is not progressing, YOU TAKE THAT BACK!

And thanks for seeing potential, cause it's hard for me to see it. I have no formal training in either writing or drawing or art, (shocked? riiight, lol) I just like webcomics and this is my way of getting in the game. It also keeps me humble, cause I caught myself saying 'hey, that looks easy' and 'how hard can that be' a couple times. Self imposed smackdown you might say.

As far as I'm concerned, floundering around and making mistakes is ok even if it's only a little funny sometimes.

Now I'm off to make a font humor focused comic strip. No seriously, I am. You just wait, you'll see.
