John Updike (1932 – 2009)
Well another great writer dies. Good news is, he left us a truckload of lengthy books to read.
Updike was one of my favourite writers. I think he definitely hooked me when in The Witches of Eastwick, he spent pages and pages describing thoughts of a man who just killed his wife, thinking calmly of the most convenient way to kill himself. Like a friend said, that could only be written by someone who had such personal experience.
Well, so long, Rabbit.

Haven't read anything of his, but obviously a big deal.

"Rabbit" series, specially the first. I liked both "Witches of Eastweek" and "Centaur", and he has a lot of good short stories. Avoid later period works.Yeahduff wrote:What should I read?

My brother enjoyed Rabbit, Run. Which is something, as the dude doesn't really read. I'll try stealing it from him.

Rabbit Run is for me like Catcher in the Rye for grown-ups. You usually like Catcher if you've read it first as a teenager, but Rabbit Run talks about the same issue from mature perspective, dealing with all the difficulties Catcher glazes over.

I remember being forced to read "The Red Pony" in 10th grade. Or maybe 9th.
Actually, that was John Steinbeck. Good book though.

I don't like Steinback. In fact I pretty much hate him, based on "East of eden", though that novel is pretty peculiar for all the pretentious crap in it, they say that some of his other novels, back when he wasn't on that high a horse, were better.

Buh. What's there to like about him, unless you like every nobel price winner by default.
