The Rick Astley Debate

Post by Killbert-Robby »

So interweb's been at it again. When MTV allowed you to post ANYONE'S name for their Best Act Ever award, Rick Astley was made the prime target (99.98% of the nominating votes). Now MTV is having to admit that either they don't care about the votes tallied up and the whole thing is a farce, or face giving their "most prestigious award" to the man behind Rickroll. But, just one song, Never Gonna Give You Up hit #1 in 9 countries, #2 in a bunch more. Even decades after his heyday, people still listen to him.
So, when put up next to "artists" such as Aguilera, Spears, Green Day, Tokio Hotel, is he actually more deserving of the title Best Act Ever than ANY of the other nominees?

Wait, you've heard of Tokio Hotel? Good grief, our containment strategies have failed! D=

Italy's overrun with them. Luckily I haven't heard them since I left. I'd still rather be rickrolled than forced to listen to them though.

This is awesome.

That and I don't know what a Tokio Hotel is.
Caught in the headlamp glare of your own blinding vanity/Mesmerised by the stare of your shallow personality
Gorging the junk food of flattery you drag your fat ego around/Everyone floored by the battering you give to whoever's around
Oh Narcissus you petulant child admiring yourself in the curve of my eyes/Oh Narcissus you angel beguiled unsated by self you do nothing but die

Tokio Hotel is the band that made the majority of guys who watch their videos unwittingly gay.

Duff, I'm hurt! Plus, I don't think people on the internet, as a whole, are boring so much as creepy.

Obviously I didn't mean people at KeenSpace. OBVIOUSLY.

I guess people are the same on the internet as the real world. Mostly boring, but there are a few gems.

I never got rickroll. I guess it's for people who think that repeating something enough times can make just about anything funny. But it becomes even less funny when they try to export it out of internet and meme culture, really, not everyone in the world is in on the joke.

Incidentally, have ou guys seen this hillarious video!

I participated in that vote, and wrote in Rick Astley. Why? Not because I think the Rickroll is funny, but more as a protest against the utter shittiness that was the choices for the "OMGBESTEVAR!!" category, and just MTV's straight-faced corporate bullshit in general. I mean, come on. If MTV didn't want to become the butt of a bad joke, they shouldn't have seriously presented such a jokingly awful group of nominees in their "most prestigious" category. Absolutely, Rick Astley deserves the award just as much any of the listed artists. "Prestigious"? Really?! That's just silly, and so the entire affair needs to be treated as silliness.

For once, the internet is right.

See this is why I don't watch MTV any more. They think they can appease me with just Metallica? WELL THEY ARE WRONG!!!

Best Act Ever?! how about Rammstein? Considering that they have sold-out shows all over Europe with stunning pyrotechnics and a really solid, creative show, I'd say they deserve to be on that list.

Yeah whatever, vote for the rickroll. At least it does say to MTV and also the music corporations "we are tired of your crap."

Pfsh... well MTV has always been crap, it's a station founded on principles of advertising music by any means other than music itself. If there ever was a period when good music prevailed on MTV, that was a sheer coincidence. It is a tv channel for people who care about what the musician is wearing or who he's dating rather than what he's singing. You get what you bargained for.
And if you're pissed off that your fave band is not getting any recognition - well what kind of crappy recognition is MTV awards? Ceremony for the lowest common denominator audience that doesn't even remember who won last year? Is that really the world you'd want your favourite band to get associated with? For me, those awards are too insignificant to even care about.

Running through the nominees...

U2. Solid band, been out there for decades, masses of hits, everyone knows at least one of their songs.
Greenday. Likewise, everyones heard them, loads of hits, around for ever.
Rick Astley. One hit wonder, internet lovechild.
Tokio Hotel. Who? How can they be worthy of Best act when only a few countries know of them?
Britney Spears. The only act she is best at is being a retard and showing the worldwide press her babyhole while getting out of Limos.
Christina Aguilera. Seriously? The only word that comes to mind when I think of all her 'music' videos, is "whore". No act, not good, fuck off.

U2 or Greenday should be the only sensible votes, but in the end, U2 just because they've been there, seen it and done it all.

I don't see why being an internet celeb should diminish his reputation. The man has... 8-9 platinums. Considering the whole nomination and voting process is BASED in the internet, why shouldn't Astley be a logical choice? I'm not a big fan of U2, Greenday's disappeared since American Idiot, and this is a vote for best act of ALL time, not the 90s-00s. Is Astley the most deserving? Probably not. But it doesn't change the fact he's a hugely recognizable act, and way more deserving than any of the other names up there.

I mean, for best act of all time, we're missing all sorts of timeless classics. Sinatra, Elvis, where are THEY!? Even if not for a victory, seeing them NOMINATED would have been interesting. Like others have said, a vote for Astley is a vote for "Fuck you and your homogenized shit".
