What scared you when you were a kid?
I just checked out kindertrauma.com. It sure brings up a lot of weird memories.
One was of the first time I saw Alice The Goon from Popeye on TV. I had nightmares of him/her/it for years after that; I remember waking up in sweat, imagining her hairy arms reaching for me, while various Unsounds dribble from her throat. Oh ye gods.

I'm a traditionalist. Doctor Who for me, especially the anti-matter monster. Like the Predator, it had a creepy sound that it made when it was about. Oh, and dessicating bodies into dried, withered mummy-like husks* was pretty spooky too.

* Well, husk. They only had one dried up human dummy but it was so cadaverous it could be used for anyone.

Gremlins.
The ones from the movies. I was convinced they were under my bed and ready to grab an ankle.

Re: What scared you when you were a kid?
Fucking aliens. It all started when I was a kid and I was watching an episode of "You can read" (Yes, I couldnt read yet, I was THAT young and this stuck with me)
It was a space episode, and all I can remember is this.... green blob nightmare alien thing on the ground, like steaming or something. I hid behind the couch, never saw the episode again. For years after, whenever I saw, say, a picture of a Grey in the newspaper, I'd have trouble sleeping the next few days and such. I couldnt even play Half Life (one) when it first came out because of this.
But I'm over my fear. Kinda. Fake aliens don't scare me. Its the *real* ones I'm still worried about
I WAS MAYBE THE ONLY PERSON EVER WHO COULD NOT SLEEP AFTER SEEING SIGNS

horses, dogs, pigs, goats...
i was once chased by a dog when i was little, but fortunately he didn\t catch me because I was too fast for him.
But the scare was worth enough to freak out about dogs for a few years.

Re: What scared you when you were a kid?
I had an uber-vivid imagination as a kid, and used to play a game where I thought the stairs behind me were crumbling away and I had to race up or down the stairs to avoid falling forever. Often the crumbling would start before I got there and I would have to run at the stairs and jump and land on the stairs instead of walking up them like a normal kid. But then it quit being a fun game and every time I approached the stairs I had to play it. Weirdly, stairs bothered me a lot as a child.
Also, I always worried that something was going to come out of the shower drain and wrap itself around my legs and try to pull me in.

I had to race up the stairs and get as far as I could before the door closed. Only, I had to be in between flights by the time it did.

Precarious places, heights in particular.. it stemmed from a ferry ride over to melbourne as a kid (20 hour boat trip, yo) at night, you look over the railing, all you see is your feet, a sheer drop, the steel hull plating, and the inky depths below...
suffice to say heights still unnerve me some.

Re: What scared you when you were a kid?
When I was like ten I always avoided walking over manhole covers. I had a terrible fear that I would step on one and a ninja turtle would pull it out from under me.
I still find myself walking around them without thinking about it.
Weird.

The Dark, Vampires and sharks... I am still close to a Phobia for the latter
Re: What scared you when you were a kid?
Bugs, they really get to me. I can't even look at pictures of them without freaking out even now. When I was little like maybe 4 or 5 I was outside with my brothers really early one morning and they were playing, I was still sleepy so I curled up and went to sleep on the back doorstep. When I woke up I was covered by little ants. I figure that might have something to do with it.
Also dogs, this one is also still there but less so the more I meet not psycho dogs. My dad had this BIG dog named Freya, she was really hyper and we had to keep her on a leash in the backyard, it was long so she could have her run of the whole thing except for a small corner, she scared the crap out of me. Whenever we played in the yard I would only play in that one little corner. My great aunt also had a dog but this one had less friendly intentions, it didn't get a leash in the yard and if you went out there and it got you it would attack you. The first time I ever stepped foot in the yard was after it died.
And of course dark and monsters that materialize next to your bed to kidnap you.
And Chucky.

Re: What scared you when you were a kid?
I still won't watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. That movie creeped me out. I also don't like clowns. I had a picture of one when I was little and would move it into the closet so I wouldn't see it, and it would reapear. I was in my teens when my mother asked where that clown picture went to, it wasn't in the closet anymore, that's when I realized who would bring it out. Then I saw Poltergiest and that was it for clowns. I also had problems with Dumbo and how mean they were to him. Then "It" by Stephen King was made into a movie and terrified me of clowns in drains until the end with the lame spider. I don't find clowns funny, and not to mention, John Wayne Gacey was a clown.

Heights, Spiders, Jon Lovitz, Elephants and I went a few weeks being afraid of Fruit because of a skit on SNL, but got over that fear quickly. My fear of Elephants was cured by being taken to the zoo and shown that Elephants are gentle giants. I'm still afraid of the other things.
