Afraid cats aren't the first animal to glow, so far i've seen rabits, pigs and goldfish. The pigs and goldfish don't need to be exposed to UV light either. And you can buy the GM goldfish as pets.

What is quite cool is a company has announced their plans to create a hypoallergenic cat. They were orginally going to GM it, but they must have realised how much the animals would cost, so instead the're working on selective breeding them.

I would buy a glow in the dark cat in a heartbeat, even if it cost a thousand dollars. So long as it was a good fit in our home.

I need some glow in the dark huskies so I can get rid of my car and just go dogsledding to work.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a horrible abuse of the poor cats?

didn't say they were the first, just saying "now there's cats"

Dude, they're genetically crafted glow-in-the-dark cats who can save lives! They're like superheroes! How is making them into comic book fantasy creatures abusing them?

I remember from the ANDi case that it was really hard to get even one monkey to express the implanted gene, and most of them didn't even make it to the point of being born. I wonder what the ratio was for this one.

The article wrote:The cats were born in January and February. One was stillborn while two others grew to become adult Turkish Angoras, weighing 3.0 kilogrammes (6.6 pounds) and 3.5 kilogrammes.
So I'd say about 67%.

I saw this yesterday. But...it made me wonder. I mean, they glow under UV light, right? But they're white cats...don't ALL white things glow under UV light?

I'm sorry, I made a mistake. Night vision uses Infrared lightsources, not ultraviolet. Don't know why I made that mistake. Though those cats are glowing a different color than white makes under ultraviolet.

Oh wait...maybe they work like regular glow in the dark objects? You know, explose them to uv, then turn it off, and they glow for a bit? That would make more sense.

This gives me an idea...

LEGO! I demand glow in the dark death squirrels! Particularly the saliva, if you please.

Well, now we know who the community perverts are.

As far as the cats go... as long as the glowiness doesn't mean they're radioactive or anything... they're adorable.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

Doesn't squirrel saliva already glow under UV light? I thought I saw that somewhere.

Unless that was just a special effect to illustrate how squirrels mark their acorns.
