All the Mythbusters Results...

Post by Rkolter »

... I know a lot of us here watch Mythbusters, and this was just too cool to not post.

http://mythbustersresults.com/results/all.html

So far I only take issue with one - they say they had a tiny amount of success with a free energy device.

Do girls pass gas?
confirmed
Kari was fitted with a special panty equipped with a microphone connected to an amplifier and a hydrogen sulfide meter. The meter malfunctioned, giving false positive readings. However, the microphone did record the sound of a released flatus.
Nice answer to a dumb question.

"Tiny amount"? Isn't free energy one of those "all or nothing" things?
Existence is a series of catastrophes through which everything barely but continually survives.

Kind of my problem with it.

But it turns out to be a false alarm - they explain that it's the 'theft of energy from the energy company' thing with huge coils of copper near power lines.

Well, in this case the actual myth was that you could lower your electric bill by using "free energy" devices. By "tiny success" they mean that one or two devices capable of capturing enough already existing energy (in the form of radio waves, magnetic fields and solar energy) to possibly power a small clock--thus reducing your electric bill/battery costs by whatever it would otherwise cost you to run a small clock.

However, whether you consider converting electromagnetic energy into electric current "free energy" is debatable. It's free in that you don't have to buy it but it's not mysteriously creating energy or undoing entropy or anything else any more remarkable than using a solar cell, wind turbine, dam or potato to get energy directly or indirectly from the sun.

For weird ways to get small amounts of energy I prefer using a long orbiting piece of wire to generate electricity from the Earth's magnetic field.

Personally the conclusion I dispute is the sword "cutting" one: I think if you're some European naval officer in nineteenth century Japan and some guy whacks your sword in half on a bet, you're not going to get out paying the guy by saying it was only broken instead of sliced.

If they'd used a camera, the show wouldn't be able to be on Discovery.

That one I saw yesterday, where she was in a silver bikini getting painted with aluminum powder to dispell the Tin Man makeup myth....woof.

I hate Kari

She's just a dumb bimbo... her qualifications are slight and she gets WAY too much attention just cause she's "hot"

Yes but they need someone 'hawt' on the show to attract those who otherwise would dismiss it as nerdiness at it's peak.

I find it strange how men will watch shows with only men in it, but then complain when a women shows up. Sexist much? It's like it invalidates the machoness of the show. Be it a bimbo or a unattractive buy intelligent women.

But the opposite when women watch shows with only women in it and then a dude shows up and the guy happens to be rather effeminite. It doesn't invalidate the show, cause it's not a big stinky dumb guy.

Still, with mythbusters, the point of the show is to dispell myths, and what discovery channel probably decided was that it was a better idea to have two groups running in parallel so they can switch between and have excuses to cut out inaction and replace with commercials.

... and probably to give it a bit more credability as 'educational' instead of a 'lets blow stuff up' show.

That's such a great, fun show. Such a simple concept behind it too.

As far as I'm concerned, Mythbusters consists of Adam, Jaime, and 'some interns or something'.

Yes, because shows about building motorcycles or large things or completely random things is so incredibly educational. I can now get in much more heated arguments with my father and feel rational.

Actually, if you watch the early episodes of Mythbusters, they feel a lot more like American Chopper - they tried really hard to show Jamie and Adam's conflicts. Once they brought in the "build team" and kind of got into their own groove the show was much more appealing to me.

As far as the "some interns or something" problem - it doesn't really bother me, as they're usually stuck singing to plants or folding paper or something stupid like that.

As cool (is that really the right word?) as Mythbusters is, I find the less credible Brainiac highly educational.

Ahhh Brainiac, euthanasia for caravans.
