Anime reccomendations?

Post by EvilChihuahua »

Hey,all.
I've read and enjoyed some of Evangelion (only up to when Rei stabs that thing with the giant spear, though, so don't drop any spoilers, please!), and watched Naruto obsessively for a while.

Does anyone have any reccomendations for some new anime to watch or read?

Some things to keep in mind:

1) I am a total newb when it comes to anime, so dont think "oh, he's probably already read that" because I probably have'nt.

2) My Dad is a pastor, and he really comes down hard on cartoon n00dity*, so keeping that to a minimum would be great.

3) I'm really into sci-fi.

*yeah, I have a content filter. sucks, eh?

You don't read anime, you read manga and watch anime. Anyway, I don't watch/read much anime/manga, but I quite enjoyed Monster. Look it up on the web first. I dunno if you'd be allowed to watch it or whatever. If so, you can get it via bitTorrent from here.

Your dad's a pastor and he let's you watch Eva?
While that series is my favorite, and Anno is one of my biggest inspirations, I have to say, that doesn't make sense.
Not only is sexuality a major part of Eva (although budding in the case of the 3rd CHILDREN [ADV lies, it's CHILDREN, not CHILD]), but there is some interesting use of Christian-Judeo (both obscure and non-obscure) mythology.
Not to mention Sigmund Freud thrown in for good measure.

I'm not saying don't watch it, I'm more of saying, don't watch it with him, especially not the movies. (And feel free to Email or IM me when you're done. You'll know why at the end, and I'm always looking for new people to babble on about Eva with)

Anyway...
Uh, 2 interesting series I can suggest from the same Director are Nadia: The secret of Blue Water, and His and Her Circumstances. Both very different from Eva, but good, IMO.

FLCL is even more GAINAX fun (some argue GAINAX at their best [aside from Eva])

My brother is a Christian and a fairly conservative one at that when it comes to sex and nudity, but I watched BoogiePop Phantom with him, and he enjoyed it much. It's violent though. Blood: The Last Vampire also violent, but very good.

I honestly have a warm place in my heart for Miyazaki, especially My Neighbor Totoro (don't look at me like that) Fairly family friendly, the closest thing to an obscene concept in this movie is the family takes a bath together, but that's a cultural thing, so it kinda is seen out of context over here.

Serial Experiments of Lain is always good for a mind-screw

Tenchi Muyo! and it's various permutatiuons have a special place in my heart, but for the cleanest version (nudity wise) Tenchi Universe would be best.

And read xxxHolic
:-P

oh, and NGE: Girlfriend of Steel 2 (sold in America under the title of NGE: Angelic Days), While I reccomend it, DO NOT read it before you at least finish the tv series. It's sort of a take off of the last episode, though in an interesting direction...
Someday, someday I'll finish Confabulation. That day is not today, however.

Fullmetal Alchemist might be a good one to start you off on, both readingwise and watching.

I enjoyed watching Akira, but it's definitely a bit violent for you. I suggest watching Steamboy (not a series, a movie).

Anything Studio Ghibli is worth watching. I /think/ all these are, but I'm not sure. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro (omg wtf catbuses), Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, and The Cat Returns.

Oh! And Howl's Moving Castle.

There ends my knowledge. XD

Dunno, doctor chasing pschopath... well, I'll check out a few episodes.
I realized I forgot to mention a few shows I watch, G(_)NDAM* Seed and Fullmetal Alchemist. (I'm not a rabid fan, so don't give me that look. :shifty:)

*Friggin content filter again... blocks the word that rhymes with "fun"

Point taken. But still, I can understand a great deal of the Japanese anyway, due to taking Japanese in school.

Aw man, for sci-fi I would recommend Cowboy Bebop. Awesome space fights and jazz.

Yeah, Spirited away rocks.
Anyway, I can generally get away with Vi0lence* , as long as the characters don't constantly have their clothing getting ripped off (like in Ranma, which I have been banned from.)

*okay, I'm getting really cheezed off now.

and no, I don't watch Eva with my dad. Duh. But it's easier to read or watch a series without keeping an eye out for the parental units. (basically, he doe'nt know.)

as for the Pseudo-judeo-christian stuff, he knows I can figure out what is and is'nt real. And If I can't, I can check with him, since It's his job to know.

Holy crap, how many of you posted while I wrote this!?!?!?

Watch out for spoilers in the articles I link.

If you want hard sci-fi with a story to it, go find Planetes. The anime and manga have been licensed.

I will second Monster if you want a very real, grounded story. The manga has been licensed on this one, but not the anime although I hear someone got the rights to a live-action movie.

If you want something that's more slow-paced and full of atmosphere, watch Mushishi. The series has finished airing, but the fansubs are only up to 21 right now.

Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty good, but the manga is better than the anime. Both have been licensed and the manga is still on-going.

Except for Fullmetal Alchemist, the ones I've recommended aren't quite typical anime series. Really, I'd recommend them to any non-anime fans looking for something without giant robots, eyes, and magical girls.

Don't watch Trigun, Trigun is crap.

I'd recommend Azumanga Daioh, too, but it tends to make men question their manliness. Both the anime and manga are available for purchase in the Queen's English. Also good by the author is Yotsuba&! which is only available in manga form (I hope for an anime :( ), also for purchase in your local bookstore.

You know It!!! seriously, after watching about 160 episodes of Naruto fansubs, the dub on YTV is painfully bad.

Then Ranma thing is a shame, it was my first ANIME (as in, not saturday morning hack&slash) back when I think I was 12 or 13 my Mom showed it to me...

Tenchi may prove problematic then...

Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis is safe, and is beautiful to look at.
The plot is more or less crap, but it's still worth watching for the imagery.

I'm not big on anime, but these are the ones I think are actual anime and that I thought were good:

Fullmetal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebob
Samurai Seven (I think? Or seven samurai?)
Yu-yu-hakusho (sort of very predictable, but I loves Kurama so I don't care)
Some people like Inuyasha... I don't, really, but it's okay.
Samurai Champloo (yay!)

Also if you can, try to watch Princess Mononoke, it's a movie, not a series, but damn is that good.

Sorry I repeated people but, yeah. Also if you can watch Adult Swim on Cartoon Network you'll find some cool stuff, like Paranoia Agent and Ghost in the Shell.
