You know, I've noticed that the 'futuristic' Final Fantasy games never did very well. But most of the ones based on swords and sorcery do. Why they'd make another futuristic looking Final Fantasy really doesn't make much sence. It seems like whatever virus is infecting Nintendo's business decisions is starting to effect Square as well. Not to say this doesn't look cool and all, but trying to slap Final Fantasy on this is going to take quite a bit of work.
Well, there's been how many futuristically themed FF game so far? VII and VIII is all I can think of, and VII obviously did quite well. VIII was more hit-or-miss. Some people love it, and some people hate it. Personally, I wasn't a fan of VIII, but that has more to do with some of it's game mechanics than it's themes.KittyKatBlack wrote:You know, I've noticed that the 'futuristic' Final Fantasy games never did very well. FFVII was more sword and sorcery than anything. It had futuristic elements to it, but the majority of it was sword and sorcery. Once you get out of Midgar, the world wasn't really all that technologicly advanced, save a few random scatterings of places.rock_dash wrote:Well, there's been how many futuristically themed FF game so far? As for FFVIII, the majority of people agree that it was one of the worst FF games made. I really don't have an opinion on it much, but that's just what the general opinion seems to be. FFIX on the other hand, was very much loved by the majority. Then X came around. Not so much love. XI? Wildly popular. Plus, all the FF's before 7 also have a huge following. I'm not saying people HATE the futuristic ones, but there's an obvious trend. Even in the movies: Final Fantasy: Spirits Within - Most people hated it. (I didn't, but that's just me.) Final Fantasy: Advent Children? Most people loved it. But FF7 already had a huge following. Also FF7 had the advantage of being the FIRST final fantasy game EVER to be rendered in 3D, and be put on CD. That in itself boosted it's popularity at the time. Now it doesn't seem like an impressive feat, but at the time of release it was awe-inspiring, and that impression holds through for a lot of people, making them a bit biased about trying to say anything negative about FF7.
But back to the original subject, I think it's because when people think Final Fantasy, they think of the days when you had a Fighter, a Mage, a Healer, a Theif, and so forth... In reality, all the FF games follow this formula, but people like tradition. They want the fighter to have a big sword. They want the mage to have long robes, a staff, and pointy hat. They want the priest to wear white, and so forth. When you put a futuristic skin on it all, at it's core, it's still FF, and because of that, it will still be wildly successful, but honestly, I forsee this one as being one of the lower-end FF's that get brushed aside in light of the good old sword and sorcery formula. But that's just my take on it.

*huggles FFVIII*
You're saying that FFVIII didn't do all that well? According to Wikipedia, it's the second best seller in the series. I think "controversial" describes fan reaction more accurately, and I assume that's mostly within the hardcore circles.

Re: *huggles FFVIII*
Best seller doesn't surprise me. Final Fantasy 7 was a huge hit. So people were still on that high, saw Final Fantasy 8 and instantly bought it, expecting another Final Fantasy 7. Most were disapointed, but really, if you bough FF8, you're probably a fan of the series, so you were going to buy it anyway just to have them all. So you're most likely not going to return it. Some probably did. But I dunno if that 'best seller' counts returns. At any rate, after FF8, people realized that just because it says 'Final Fantasy' doesn't mean it's going to be the best RPG to date. Hence the drop in sales after FF8.Cope wrote:You're saying that FFVIII didn't do all that well? According to Wikipedia, it's the second best seller in the series. Square just likes to push the eye candy envelope.
With FF7 we got chunky 3D
With FF8 we got pretty life-like CG, and less chunky 3D
With Ff9 we got a throw back to FF5 and earlier, Getting away with the marionette style
With FFX we almost got away from chunky 3D, but the CG is prettier than FF8
FFX-2 was no improvement over FFX
I won't comment on 11 since I did not play it, and wasn't planning on it (Sorry I have no time to waste on MMORPGS)
FFX-12 I haven't even looked at
and now we have FFX-13 which (from what I'm getting from the video) real-time CG, simliar to the FF7 PS3 tech demo.
If you don't remember, FF1-5 all had the same basic premise 'The bad guys want the 4 crystals that control the elements" ... or so I recall.
FF6 (not 7) was the first to jump on the steampunk, and has been there ever since with the exception of FF9.
Now FF6-10 (not 9) also have the same basic premise, The bad guys are doing stuff, towns are destroyed by the villains, there is some kind of rebel group, and all the playable characters are locked to equipment/jobs. So it's a matter of strategy, you have to pick characters for each battle that work, or you just level up like mad and any character can single handly defeat anyone. The story of FF6 is so simliar to FF7 and FF8 and FF10
Act 1, the first playable character unwittingly is part of a rebel group(FF6 Returners, FF7 Avalanche, FF8 Forest Owls, FF10 quite a bit further into the game)
Act 2, Villian gets the upper hand just long enough to unleash an even worse evil (FF6 Fake ending, FF7(twice!), The first CEO of shinra dies, and then Rufus "disappears" after the weapon attack, FF8 The secret of the Gardens is revealed, FF10, that entire Bevelle wedding crasher thing is ripped from FF6 I swear!)
Also to note, in FF6 the world is "destroyed" at this point, where FFX Zanarkand is revealed to have been destroyed centuries ago... if you follow the story of FF6 you'd also know that the FF6's world was destroyed by magic, where as in FFX, it was destroyed by Magic too. Where as FF7 is open ended as to if the world is destroyed at the end (untill AC came out), and FF8's Time-travel battle... well, in case you didn't read this paragraph correctly, each FF game mentioned so far has a "time-travel" clause. Flashing forward or backward, or just enough to confuse little children and dumb adults.
Act 3, Final Villian is revealed, takes "ultimate form", and after this, there is a long CG sequence suggesting the aftermath of it.
I'm probably generalizing too much for this, but I noticed before FFX was announced that FF6/7/8 were the same basic story. Rebel group, real villian is revealed, final ultimate form battle.
Also consider that Moogles (as if FF5), Chocobos (as of FF2), Cid (-ALL-) are common to all of them, as well as airships.
OH... Time Travel is a recurring theme used too.
FF1 uses it as a key element, FF8 uses it as a key element, FF10 uses it as a key element.
In fact only the FF Movie (Spirits within) does NOT use the moogles or chocobos. It still uses Cid.
Or maybe I'm tired and will now start making stuff up just to fill in the nonsense blanks.
Something that people keep bringing up and is a really stupid excuse, is "how FINAL is Final Fantasy" . Well only the ones that are numbered in sequence are based on the same formulas, where as some varients (Crystal Chronicles for one) have even less in common. FFCC is a realtime cooperative battle system (you need buddies to play it effectively), But NONE of the games are sequals to each other except 7 and X's sequals, which aren't the next "number" but rather squals with the same number and a different title.
Like I want to play the FF7 FPS game just cause I liked FF7, but I'm not going to preorder it or anything silly like that.
I still need to finish Kingdom Hearts before I get KH2 (or do I need to get the GBA KH first?)
One of the things that always bugged me about FF games was that they made the games exponetially harder as you progress. In a MMORPG, this is unacceptable, I'm not going to waste hours of my time killing weak creatures just to level up to kill slightly less weak creatures. In a solo game, this is an optional activity. I played through FF6(called FF3) without spending any time leveling. I also played through FFX without spending any time leveling. FF8 I'm going to just admit I cheated because I got pissed off at how many times I had to start over because I didn't save a back up of my savegame, and lost it between computer reinstalls... every time. FF7 I just didn't wind up finishing because I was watching my sister play it and she finished it.
FF8 and Parasite Eve... PE I didn't have my own PS1/PS2 everytime I played it and kept having to start over. My sister actually had the PS1. I only bought a PS2 after the redesign came out.

I'll generally reserve judgment on XIII until the game comes out. But I have to admit, the trailer DOES look delicious in every way. Of course, I also find it peculiar that they'd release it considering how delayed XII has been Hmmh.
I remain dubious of XII's combat system. It just doesn't look fun. But again, I'll reserve judgment until it actually comes out. True, they released a demo of it...but demos are rarely representative of the final product. Just look at Shadow of the Colossus. The character models still weird me out...but maybe I'll get used to them. I used to think some of the designs for X looked odd, but now I've grown to like them (except maybe for Seymore's).
Looks like they're going with a more tech route for XIII again. Hmmm. And a female main character, to boot. True, there was X-2. And X was really about both Tidus and Yuna. And 6 has been mentioned, although it's hard to pick any one main character there. So I guess as far as concrete main characters in a main title...hmm.
If they can make the combat in the game look like it is in the trailer and have it work intuitivly, they will SO win.

edit: wait a bloody minute.... they're already bringing trailers of ff 13 when i didn't even get a chance to play ff12?
Did I skip a year in time or something?
Also, from what I'm reading now, it ain't 1 game, it's 3 games working together.
One being on the cellphone, one being a singleplayer adventure with 1 character (as in the movie depicted) and one being like crystal chronicles for 4 people to play at the same time.
All in the same time and universe but in different places and with different production teams.
I fear for japanese people, this will be more addicting than crack.
