She didn't quit because of the cartoons. She quit because she ordered a site to be shut down at the same time that the Scandinavian countries were having a big row over the limits of free speech and religious tolerance. Add in the fact that the Foreign Minister shut down a domestic website, and her career was basically over.
"Ms Freivalds was rounded on by the press when a far-right website was forced to close on 9 February, after a foreign ministry official contacted the site's hosting company.
Critics said this was an intrusion on the freedom of speech.
The minister said she did not order the official to contact the company, but a later report from the ministry said she was involved in the decision."

at her age, it's not like she's got a lot of options left. should've just ridden it out to retirement.

Shutting down a website because you're afraid of a cartoon is, yeah.

Pretty much the entire foreign ministry and government is under criticism for their percieved lack of response to the Tsunami, and there's been many voices speaking for change since last fall or longer.
This would be the drop that made the barrel overflow.

Dunno, if Persson and his cabinet was in Washington, they'd probably been ousted, violently, by now.
But then, they are social democrats (though they seem to keep forgetting that all the time for some reason. I guess all those years in power are getting to them).

Hell, I rarely, if ever, get to be political about my own nation with people who doesn't know or care more than me.
I rather like the concept.

Stupidity is not the problem. It's "manliness."
Yes, that's right. Lack of intelligence is not the issue. It's the stubborn refusal to admit wrong even when the entire world is pointing out the problem.
I think I'll continue calling it "stupid."

Stupid Manliness is Stanliness. Stan is the cause of all our problems.
Seek out and destroy Stan.
