...and all chances of the Catholic church joining the 21st (or even 20th) century just went up in a could of white smoke.

I don't know much about this guy's policies, but people in some other forums I go to are upset already. I'm waiting to hear more; I'm sure it'll be all over the news in the next few days.

I'm just glad it's not another Pope John Paul. I likes me some variety.

I'm suprised he was elected, considering he is 78. I guess they're not going for a long term pope this time around
EDIT: Oh man, someone just edited
his wikipedia page to say "eats children".

So wow, he was a member of the Hitler Youth AND the Grand Inquisitor! Even if he was
required to be a member of the Hitler Youth, I'm still a bit worried about the whole inquisition thing. Even if it doesn't offend me personally, people might tend to hold grudges about that. Wonder why.
Well, the internet sure is going to have a lot of fun with this guy...

Since the guy was evidently forced into joining both the Hitler Youth and the German Army, I won't hold that against him. But his current conservative stands on issues are not going to help the Church get out of its problems.

However, even if he was forced, I would hold it against him. They're choosing Pope, perhaps the most important religious figure in the world, I mean, they're not votiong him in the library or something - his record is supposed to be spotless.

Don't blame me, I voted for
Rachel Whittington.

Of course not. And even if it was me, he'd be morally obliged to forgive me.

In regards to his age, I read an article which said that one of the reasons the concave were considering so many older cardinals as candidates was so that they'd have a short papacy (unlike JP II's really honking long one). This would give people a chance to consider the merits of a more liberal pope and church. Essentially, the article suggested that they were electing a stopgag pope.
Whatever the case, I feel remarkably uninspired to rejoin the Catholic church.

Actually, I think the Catholic chruch had their share of bible and jew burnings sometime in the past. After all, when Christianity first started it was considered Heresy by the Catholic church. And we all know that the Catholics, Christans and Jews never saw eye to eye in the first place. So for picking a leader of religion based on intolerance and predejuce, I don't see it as that much of a black mark...
Disclaimer: This isn't ment to be offensive to Catholics in particular. I feel the same about most religions.

to be fair to the Catholic Church during the Inquisition, who wasn't burning the poor Jews up until 1945? then the Holocaust occured and God finally smit us all with collective guilt (at the expense of about several million lives). too bad it doesn't seem to have stuck. I liked to think that in the 21st century we finally were better, that we finally were learning from history, but am seeing things really haven't changed.

It started as an offshoot of it, but in the begining the Catholics thought it was an evil cult. Which doesn't surprise me.
Any religion that has a leader that would order his troops to go into a village and "Slay them all, God will know his own." seriously needs to be taken with a grain of salt, in my opinion.
