Man, it's been so long since I've played D&D. I miss it so much. But anyway, the most important thing I've learned by playing it, and the only bit of advice you need to be good at the game is this: Don't worry about trying not to die. It is a mistake all first-timers, and even most experienced players make. They work their asses off trying to stay alive by coming up with careful strategies and thinking about the best course of action and basically doing a lot of meta-game thinking. It's all based on a simple math equation:

The harder you try to keep your character alive = the harder the DM will try to kill you

The more reckless and carefree you character is = the More the DM will go out of his way to keep you alive.

So be impetuous. Open doors without doing a listen check, talk to monsters before you attack them and go into battle with no weapons or armor. Because in the end, whether you live or die is all in the hands of the DM.

My best bit of advice is to not confuse the DM by attempting to outthink him. I did this once and utterly confused my DM using tactics learned from The Princess Bride's wine test scene. DM's generally do not like to be confused when it's their game to control.

Other than that, buy weird objects if you can afford to (you never know what will need it for) and always bring a sturdy length of rope. Rope is one of the most useful tools in any tabletop role playing game. Without rope, you're doomed.

Ever since I started DMing, I've been known as a killer DM.

Oddly, I find that's what a lot of players want. Not that they want their characters to DIE necessarilly, but that they want situations in which they really could die, and all they usually ask for is a fair chance, honest die rolls, and a well done narrative. I've had a LOT of people say I'm an excellent DM... and the more I try to kill them, the better they seem to think I am.

Man, players are a weird lot.

Honest dice rolls reminded me of something else....

Don't let anyone else use your d20... especially me. If the d20 isn't mine, I curse it to roll below a 10 merely by touching it. It's not like I mean to.. it just happens. So guard those dice! :P

LY's rope comment reminded me of a good one:

Remember that the things you have in your possession may have multiple uses, and think on your feet. Be creative. VERY creative. Did I ever tell you how my players took down a goblin horde with nothing more than two hundred feet of rope, four coils of 50 feet apiece, and the things you can find in a lightly wooded area?

I mean, I took every fucking weapon from them. EVERY ONE. And most of their armor. I got the Mage's spellbook wet and had the priest's holy symbol stolen. They were only fourth level...

When they'd finished their plan and explained it, and it turned out to work, they all got triple experience.

See? Rope is a very important addition to any campagne.

Also, if you have fun little skills, practice them when there's no danger around. Funny things can happen and, if your DM has a good sense of humor, it can turn out really interesting. As a theif, I once practiced my skill on a paladin who was asleep. I stole everything from him except his loin cloth... weapons, armor, everything. I put it back and kept part of the money since his character didn't know that my character was a theif and my character didn't want his to notice that there was missing money. So practice when the opportunity arises.

Lucky for you then. Apparently WotC just got bought out by Hasbro. Yes. Hasbro. It is a sad day for geeks and nerds everywhere.

If you ever encounter a jelly or slime, cut a little off and keep it in a flask. Feed it until it fills the flask, halve it and put it in two flasks. Repeat.

Then throw them in battle.

I heard D&D is addictive. I have friends here at school that play it all the time. I wish I had something to say about it, but I never played.

.....

Have fun with it!

Cast sanctuary and run away from everything. Then don't heal your allies and loot their dead bodies.

GOD, I hated that cleric.

Does that mean if somebody dies, it's a clerical error...?
