Nintendo has three major flaws:
1. They worry way too much about piracy. They forfiet useful/nessicary upgrades to their systems in order to make it harder to pirate software. (I.E. N64 using cartriages, Game Cube using the tiny disks.)
2. They're TOO Japanese. This is purely opinion, but I think Nintendo just doesn't trust Americans(Or europians for that matter.) to produce games for their console. Which is why on a rare occasion they DO get a thrid party to produce a game, it comes from Konami, Capcom or other japanese third party.
3. Nintendo enjoys rehashing everything. It has a ton of licences under it's belt and it's not afraid to whore them out in any possible fashion. (DDR Mario Mix, anyone?)
They're just NOW realizing that no one actually LIKES the cell shaded link, they just put up with it because there was NOTHING ELSE WORTH PLAYING on the system at the time. So yeah, a little slow on the uptake there too. (Oh, and requiring $150 GBA's to play multiplayer in a game *coughcrystalchronicals* is not a way to win fans.)
But dispite all this I still do apprecate Nintendo and would like for them to stick around. They just need to get on the ball a little bit, or they're going to become the next Sega.

No real big steps with that game, but playing as a snowman with a shotgun is pretty fun. I love it.Levi-chan wrote:wp: Timesplitters!
I've been looking at all the systems without a bias, and I've leaned towards the PS3. For me, the XBOX360 (360? The hell? Do they really think that Xbox2 will make it sound inferior?) is just a system made by microsoft and its money. I barely touch the old xbox because I think its part of Microsoft's monopoly (even though the US government disagrees with me) Most of its great games it bought off of other systems. Halo? Originally supposed to come out for PC and PS2 (Even though no one believes me on that, I remember reading that it was supposed to come out for the PS2.). Then there's the stable of Rare games that's coming out for the system. (And I'm not looking foward at those, either, judging by their craptastic game Grabbed by the Ghoulies). Almost all the xbox360 launch games are just ports from PC games (ahem, Quake 4) which I can play on my PC. There aren't any good exclusive games (try to count them. There's only KOTOR, Halo, Jade Empire, DOA and.... yeah. There's only enough to count on one hand.) Most of the games are usually for almost all the systems, so there isn't much there for exclusives.
Honestly, I was the one person disappointed by Halo 2. Single player was total crap, and its only redeeming factor was multiplayer. I quit single player after I realized that the levels were becoming repetative (same buildings, same areas, and elevator battles out of the wazoo. Damn that sucked). Multiplayer was good, I have to admit, but that doesn't make a good game. Neko pointed out that Halo 2 was marketed well, because there were ads almost every day for that game, as well as a media blitz that seemed crazy to me. Again, Microsoft's money at work.
Revolution? Nintendo isn't even trying to make a system to dominate the rest. All it wants is a system that'll appease its fanbase, the fanboys that have gotten almost every system since NES. Thus, the downloadable games. You can download almost every game made for any Nintendo system. So you'll be seeing n64 games with some NES games on that little sucker. Joy. At least its price is going to be much less than any of the other consoles. And Gamecube compability.
Yeah, I'm leaning towards the PS3. My solitary reason: Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm a Hideo Kojima fanboy, and seeing that poster with Meryl and Vamp on it drove me insane. I originally got my PS2 for Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear Solid, and I'm probably going to get the PS3 for the same exact thing. Yeah, I could get an xbox and wait a couple of months for a port, but I'm too much of a fanboy of both games before waiting that long. Final Fantasy is another series I've been going through. I admit, the controller is a bit stupid looking, but that's the exact same thing that happened to the Xbox before the redesigned controller. The prices hasn't been set yet, and I'm doubting the 500 dollar price tag. The system's supposed to compete with the Xbox360, so I'm guessing a same price tag. More info is supposed to come at the Tokyo Game Show, about the same time as the Xbox360 launches.
But here's a different viewpoint. DVD. XBox360 will use the HD-DVD format Microsoft made. PS3 will use Blu-Ray. Consider this to be the same as VHS and Betamax. Which one will come out as the winner? HD-DVD will store up to 50 gigs, Blu-Ray, 100 Gigs (Totally serious, read PC Magazine. They talked about that.) HD-DVD has support from all the major movie companies due to its heavy encryption, and Blu-Ray has support from every major hardware company. (Apple is one of them!) Soo which one will come out on top? I can't even tell which one will do the best. I'm not even including the Revolution in this little battle, just because it just barely started to play regular DVDs. Nothin high def.
Another point, is the space of the discs. 100 gig disc games for the PS3 are going to really hard to port, and I'm sure companies are going to have a hard time trying to split games into two discs (Putting all the textures on twice, music, and engine files... daaamn.)
So yeah, I'm going for PS3. For the games and possible Linux Sony-supported port.

I'm looking forward to the 360 only because it will drive down the price of X-Box games (I may actually get a current-generation system soon!)
And as to Nintendo, I was under the impression that they were trying to innovate and try different things (i.e. the DS touch screen, the rumored configurable control for the Revolution). As a result, they've become less appealing to casual gamers. Or so I've heard.

Nope. PS3 will have Blu-Ray but XBox360 will only have a 12 speed dual layer DVD drive. This is likely going to be the XBoxs weakest point in the future.Teammayhem wrote:But here's a different viewpoint. DVD. XBox360 will use the HD-DVD format Microsoft made. PS3 will use Blu-Ray. I'm looking forward to finally getting my butt in gear and actually buy a console once the next-gen ones come out, because out of all the people I know, I'm the one who would have the most fun with a console and also, conversely, one of the only ones who DON'T have one. Then again, me being me, it most likely will never happen.

KOTR is not an exclusivefor the x-box its a PC game too, so that reduces the number of exclusive games for the x-box.Teammayhem wrote:

Although Fable was x-box only..
Friend pointed that out to me. Plus, Fable wasn't so great as it was hyped to be (Xbox, honestly, is all about the hype it gets. And there's nothing to a lot of the hype)Rowen wrote:KOTR is not an exclusivefor the x-box its a PC game too, so that reduces the number of exclusive games for the x-box.Teammayhem wrote:

Nooot exactly. According to the HD DVD Promotion group, HD DVD will carry a specified 32 gigs. Blu Ray, up to 54 gigs. My mistake.War wrote:Nope. Quick Edit. Sony just bought MGM, one of the biggest filmmakers in the buisness, with over 3000 movies at their disposal. Imagine all of those films as well as all the films from Sony. That's a lot of movies at their disposal.

Hey now! I'm not what you would call a 'fan' of Microsoft, but I still play the 'Box.
Just as VHS and Betamax were competing standards for home movies [years ago], HD-DVD and Blu Ray are competing standards for the storage of High-definition media.
And don't think just because Blu Ray holds more that it'll win out. You also have to factor in manufacturing costs, other technical specs, willingness to adopt a specific standard, etc. Number three in that list is especially important.

1 is absolutely correct. Nintendo also tries too hard to fight progress. They basically blocked online play on the cube, which cost them several publishers. They're also holding out on graphics for the revolution for reasons no one can understand.KittyKatBlack wrote:Nintendo has three major flaws:

2 is only kinda right. Nintendo does have some games by EA and Ubi Soft and a couple other non-japanese publishers. I suspect this probably isn't nintendo's fault, when little companies are making games, they automatically think of the PS2.
3 I'd actually disagree with, Nintendo's strongest (and perhaps only) selling point is the games with it's mascot characters. They just keep messing things up. Mario Sunshine and Yoshi Touch and Go come to mind first of games where they should have stuck to the previously established formula. Kirby can get away with anything, but not everyone is Kirby.
Wind Waker and Starfox Assault / Adventures are other examples of games that deviate from the established standards but are still somewhat decent games.
What it really comes down to is that Nintendo keeps trying to reinvent the wheel. When you make a game, you inevitably find some things that work and others that don't. You don't start over next time, you add new stuff but you keep the things that worked the best and get rid of those that didn't work at all. It seems like when nintendo makes a good game it's random because they don't learn from the past.
They're still my favorite company, they just make me mad.
I'll be grabbing a revolution for the sake of playing some old school nintendo games again. I need a throwback to when people didn't bitch at each other about system wars and a machine could just play games without having seven different blowjob functions bundled with free remote. Not that seven different blowjob functions is a bad thing, one just gets tired of the endless debate and tired arguments.

If thier next system doesn't deliver the quality that I, as a nintendo fan, deserve, I am giving up on them and will invest in a PS3 or X-Box 360. ( or whatever is out at the time)

And as an opinion: Mario DDR Is probably the worse thing I have heard my entire life. I almost died when I heard about it. But I am looking forward to the next Smash Bros. I like SSB. Mario Kart and anything else Mario is getting on my nerves. The new Mario bros. game that comes out better deliver, because I'm tired of mario being in EVERY game BUT his own.. seriously!
"A new Mario Game? is it a new Mario Brothers game like I used to love?"
"No, I'm sorry, it's Mario Rock Paper Sissors!!! Thr new Mario game where you PLay as your favorite Mario Allstars in the most Extreme game of Paper Rock Sissors, EVER!!!"
-or-
"Nope, it's the new Mario Party 49!!!! Mario and the gang haven't actually had to make a real game in a few years, so their getting together and having a PITTY PARTY!!! That's right kids!! Play through Hundreds of mindless Mini-Games that will eventually give you cancer, as your favorite Nintendo charecters plus a few more that we crapped out JUST FOR THIS GAME!!!!!!"
Like I said, Nintendo has one more chance. If they screw it up, I'm leaving them. Not even my tremendous love for Link will stop me. I have a 64, I can always revisit him there.
