Summer Movies

Post by JPSloan »

After HHGG opens this weekend, I'm going to start measuring life by movies and the weekends they open.

These are the movies coming out this summer that I want to see:

My lord, Hollywood has certianly been crap these past few years. Least they are consistant.

But on a more positive note, movies I'll likely pay to see are HHGG, Star Wars, and maybe (likely) Batman.

The Pink Panther? Not another remake.

Unless it's about the cartoon guy. He's pretty cool.

I already responded on your LJ, Sloan, but now that Pimpette brings it up:

No "Charlie" on your list? SHAME!
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

Well, I don't think it was so much a case of not being able to replace the original...it's just that movie was horribly written. Still, that gags in the trailer for the new one don't really fill me with too much hope that the new one will be brilliantly written either.

I have just been blessed with a news that Terry Gilliam finished his "Brothers Grim". I don't know if it's gonna be released in summer, but that's definitely one to fait for.
Also, Tim Burton's mussings; And I think I'll see "Intimacy", "Very long engagement" and "Robots"; although those are already in theatres I haven't seen them yet.

^ A Very Long Engagement is a really good movie.

Ah, Audrey Tautou [little hearts swirl about above Jackhass' head].

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Ergh. I'm going to go see it, but . . . well, from all I've read, the just about the only thing it's going to really have in common with any of the previous versions is a lot of the names, and a bit of the beginning. A ton of the jokes have supposedly been ripped out heartlessly and replaced by non-jokes. But . . . it's got the Guide name slapped across it, so it's a matter of geek pride to go see it.

Kingdom of Heaven - ARGH! *gurgle gurgle* No more historical drama! I just can't take it anymore!

Unleashed - I only heard about this the other day, and the only thing I heard was that Jet Li was in it. According to IMDb, Li plays a slave who's forced to fight in gladiator-like street fighting tournaments until his master gets into a car wreck and goes comatose . . . then a blind piano player teaching him about . . . uh, stuff. Or something. It sounds just lame enough to make me not want to go see the martials arts ass kicking.

Mindhunters - For those of you who've gone "huh?" at this one, it's about a group of special agents training to hunt down serial killers in a giant urban simulator (an island with fake buildings to better simulate real life conditions), but things go horribly wrong when an actual serial killer (possibly one of the traniees themselves) starts hunting them down one by one. I'm actually interested in seeing this one, myself.

Revenge of the Sith - Gotta see this one, of course, but I've sort of got mixed feelings about it at the moment. The previews show supremely awesome moments that could well rival some of those in episodes IV-VI . . . but then, the previews for I and II did the same, and there weren't as many of those moments as were promised. Guess we'll just have to see.

Exorcist Original Prequel - Eh. Not really a big fan of the other Exorcist movies. Might go see it just for the horror movie appeal, however . . . but only 'cause I'll be able to see it for free.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith - Concept, good. Previews, bad. Free viewing, good. Probable outcome . . . wasted time.

Batman Begins - Gotta see it 'cause it's a comic book movie. The preview actually looked good, and there's a good number of excellent actors that're gonna be in it. Expectations are high on my part, expectations which will hopefully not be dashed to the ground in little bitty pieces.

Land of the Dead - Who did what now? Oh, yah, it is Romero's next. Hmm. Maybe. Need to watch the others first (and one or two of 'em again), tho'.

War of the Worlds - ARGH NO I can't stand another incorrectly made War of the Worlds! Make them stop, dammit!

Fantastic Four - Once again, this is a must see since it's a comic book movie . . . but I really expect it to be total crap. It looks like they didn't even try to make Thing look like he was actually made out of rocks. I can dig the fact that he's a guy in a rubber suit rather than CG, since it gives him an actual presence on the scree, but come on . . . he looks like a guy in a rubber suit! They couldn't be bothered to make some paper machie rocks and glue them to that plastic hide? Pfft.

The Island - Heh. Sounds like Logan's Run crossed with The Truman Show crossed with a Twilight Zone episode. Might be worth it just to chuckle at how ridiculous it is.

Existence is a series of catastrophes through which everything barely but continually survives.

The ones I'm dying to see are: Star Wars Ep. III, Willy Wonka, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Eh. The 50's version was badly flawed, yes, but it had its moments when the human characters weren't cluttering up the screen. The 30's radio play was good; anyone who hasn't ever heard it should definitely try and track down a copy. I have no particular urge to see the new Spielburg version, although I admit a morbid curiousity about the low-budget British take that's out there...

I have to really really want to see a movie if I see it in a theater. I'll probably go for HHGG; some reviews are saying it's not as bad as all that. Ditto RotS and maybe Willa Wonka.

I dunno I don't really go out to see films at regular cine to much but there are few this summer I might go see, just cause in my world it would be criminal not to see.

HG2G-- I've lived most my life into the many remakes and varient media of hitchiker's guide so whats one more?

Batman begins-- a revamped orgin of one of the classics.. plus Bale.. i'll go see it.

Fantastic Four-- well even though the acting doesn't look to great the trailer looks to have some interesting effects (the CG doesn't look so half tilt and actually compliments thier powers) so I'll probably go see this one.

Land of the Dead-- Romero is a gawd in my world so I'll probably check this one out.

Charlie and Choco fac-- burton depp... and my name (though mispelled) is in the title I'll probably check it out.

Spriteville: Yes, it's the fourth "of the dead" movies. It's basically the same plot as Day of the Dead, with humans being seiged in their last city. The new elements: there is a "mutation" in the zombies, and there is a power struggle between the statescraftsmen and the military complex (typical Romero theme), and a huge friggin' ED209 robot that mows down zombies like blades of grass. Oh, and Simon Pegg got a cameo because Romero liked Shaun of the Dead so much.

CJ: Well, I'm giving it a shot... it has Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, and Jean Reno. And while they've had their ugly turns, they've all also had brilliant turns. Ve shall zee, non?

Kevin: I'd rather chew and swallow glass than to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factor. Reasons: I hate Roald Dahl. I hate Tim Burton. I hate surrealism. I hate Tim Burton. And, I hate Tim Burton. But then, we've established that we have an almost diametrically opposed taste in movies.
