okay, this has gone beyond silly. (and I don't m ean the punning. I LIKE puns as much as the next guy, so long as the next guy isn't joel.)

it seems to me that if a jam isn't thouroughly discussed beforehand by the comicgen illuminati, everyone jumps down the throat of whoever starts it. to be honest, I'm sick of it. it's one of the reasons I stopped caring about cg for a couple months. (the other was work at a REAL job--wheeeeee)

unless one of a select few people who have been here for years start a jam, it inevtably degenerates into yelling and insults, and nonsense, and then we have four pages of talk in what should be a mostly pictorial thread.

this is extremely annoying, as one of the ways you become well known, and/or an insider seems to be participation in jams. it a regular catch-fucking-22. you can't tell people how great jams are, point to jams that defined the community for you, and then jump their shit when they try to start one in the enthusiasm YOU started.

so, in short, if you absolutely feel you MUST bitch, put it in a comic so I don't have to read 4 pages of absolute drivel in order to see somebody's attempt to assimilate int the community.

dreammaniac, use me or don't. I don't care. either way, I'll be happy.

I feel a need to weigh in for some reason... Ignore me at will. In fact I almost recommend it. (let this die)

The jams in my memory that have really taken off were never started by any one person. They started themselves. For example, Keenreality started as a "Hey this idea would be kinda cool" completely out of the blue. Just a wistful thinking sort of thing. Then someone doodled something funny for no real reason other than they were bored in response to the goings on in that thread. Then someone else doodled something funny for no real reason other than they were bored as well. Then someone else doodled something in response to the doodles. It was never intended to be a jam, it evolved into one.

If someone wants to make a jam out of something, be kooky and funny in comic format. Even one panel comic format. I know I've had loads of fun doodling the antics that have gone on in the Chat. (which is actually how the Revolution got started...) Maybe someone will respond in kind. Force the flower to bud too early and it just looks ugly... Let nature take it's course.

But more importantly, be awesome all the time. It solves everything!

Oh I love when people blame their own failure to integrate into the forum on everyone else but themselves.

Yes, it's true that this forum has a core of "selected people". Yes, it's true that some of them can be judgemental. So what? So does every other forum community on internet. So is it so unreasonable to expect that the word of someone who's been here for five years has more weight than someone who's been here for three months? Despite what you might think, we don't have secret late night meetings to decide who is in and who is out. I for one haven't been on any secret meetings for a long time.

You take the worst examples to judge community. Believe it or not, people are coming to the forum all the time, and what's more, fitting in. I can name - at any given time - several forumers who've been here for a short time but have been well-accepted. But you don't take those examples into account, you just consider one or two examples that stick out. You get accepted by gradually making yourself reckognizable to people. If you choose to do it by trying to be a center of attention, normally you risk to run into a brick wall.

Jams have nothing to do with people being accepted. I can name dozens of people who never posted a single jam entry, but are still loved. I can also name a dozen of people who are constantly there for every jam, but aren't loved. Jams come once or twice a year, but conversation goes on all times. If Dreammaniac irks some people, that is less likely because of his jam attempts, and more likely because of the rate with which he's cranking up posts even when he has nothing to say.

Yeah, this forum is not your friendly ghost casper, it will not get along with everything you do, it will not pat you on the shoulder and incourage you no matter how you act. It is a judgemental forum that asks from you more common sence than a lot of people have. So what? Don't like it - go to gaia or somewhere.
That's why I adviced Dreammaniac not to get addicted to this forum - because it's more judgemental than it might seem at start. Otherwise it might end up like with Dracomax - one day wherever you go you run into him. The next day he's talking about how awful this place it.

hey, i didn't mean to come off as I was saying the place is aweful, and I know that I'm not necessarily being fair to the community as a whole.

I just felt the need to vent about something I see every freaking time someone starts a jam.

now that I've vented, I feel better. and I apologise to anyone who felt I was hateful.

I just get tired of people piling on other people for what seems like very little provocation, especially since without it this thread would be less than a page long. :P

I was planning to split this thread into jam thread and conversation thread if the conversation goes too off-topic. Ultimately I'd leave comments like Komi's and Carlin's, because they do adress the issue in a helpful way. I'm just waiting to see if DreamManiac is going to post more comics, if he's still going through with this, otherwise no point in splitting.

goodness I hope so. ha ha. oh two years from now we'll look back on this thread and laugh! probably when some noob accidentally resurrects it from the archives. :)

discussion? no usually either someone comes up with a funny idea... or a random sketch and we all laugh ourselves silly. the only real discussions we have involve the translation of the cryptic language known as "tynan" or when Claude talks to himself in the loo.
Dracomax wrote:this is extremely annoying, as one of the ways you become well known, and/or an insider seems to be participation in jams. it a regular catch-fucking-22. you can't tell people how great jams are, point to jams that defined the community for you, and then jump their shit when they try to start one in the enthusiasm YOU started.
there's more than a few core people here, at any one time. sure there's the mainstays like... Mcduffies and bob... but the core group is always changing, and new people arriving and fitting in, even during times when we don't have anything going on, jam wise.

Now I'm a middle of the roader in terms of time spent here, at the CG/keenspace, but to fit in here, and to be accepted... I don't think its that hard. Now granted it seems there's a group of people who are really good friends, but there's a few of those around. not one. And I think that someone, can find a niche here. but there are really two things you need to really do well here.

1. Don't things so seriously- There's a lot of humour around this place. And there's a lot of jabs, and all around ridiculousness. You are going to be the butt of a joke. Being cool enough to take a joke, and know that its all in good fun is sooo important here. you take it to seriously, and well... it becomes a staple... no offense Draco but you should know this fairly well.

2.Be your own person- Most people here are freaking nerds. And that being said, why try to be cool, when everyone here obviously isn't? Manufacturing cool be it signature phrases (get in the box, Outraged, etc) is annoying and not funny, replicating jokes, and creating threads because it went over well the first time.. just don't. we don't need another Claude, McDuffies, War, or Neko... trust me just one of these guys is enough... for any community. we should start an exchange program or something.

I dunno if this helps any at all... probably not. But at the end of the day... most of us aren't really that unforgiving. but its hard to really want to befriend someone who graits on the nerves. some people become staples of the community long after they have left, others become reoccuring gags. choose your fate wisely.
