Since personal information doesn't need that much hardware, and games just need to be reinstalled, and online gaming is fun, why not have all your personal stuff on an isolated computer and all the entertainment on the beefed up one?Dr Neo Lao wrote:Definitely a major dealbreaker.
Not so much the DRM itself (no matter what style it is) but the fact that it has to be registered online at all.
I'm paranoid, and I run two networks. One has internet access and is a single computer that has bare bones installed for using on the internet. Picks up a virus? Just re-install. The other is the home network that has no outside links. It has all our sensitive information, personal stuff, games, photos, random junk - whatever. It's all there.
I refuse to buy games (or any software) that has to be taken on-line in order to use it. Which means that I'm buying less and less software lately. It's been a few months since I've bought something.

Re: Spore...
I was really looking forward to 'Spore' but I hated this DRM at Bioshock, and this is nothing I want for an expensive new game, too ... I'm not going to buy stuff for ~50€ without freedom to install this as often as I want to ... sometimes I'm really not sure if those game producers just want to play games with us (instead of selling us a good product).

We wanted to let you know that we've been hearing your concerns about the online authentication mentioned earlier this week. I didn't want to head into the weekend without getting back to you with some information about how Spore is planning on using this new system.
A few things we wanted you to know:
— We authenticate your game online when you install and launch it the first time.
— We'll re-authenticate when a player uses online features, downloads new content or a patch for their game.
— The new system means you don't have to play with the disc in your computer. And if you are like me, always losing discs, this will be a huge benefit.
— You'll still be able to install and play on multiple computers.
— You can play offline.
We do hope that players will play online - sharing creatures, buildings and vehicles with other players is something that is unique to Spore and one of the coolest features of the game. Every day, when I play the Creature Stage, I get to see wacky and awesome new creatures from my Buddies on the team coming over the hill at me and I can't wait to see what happens when our creative, passionate community starts sharing their creations.

Well, if you consider the three computers thing to be a deal breaker, check when it comes out. They may have relented, it seems.

Re: Spore...
As Joel said
I'm really looking forward to Spore, I like the idea, and I like the possible in-game-freedom you can have - but thats just one thing. If I have to spend this much money for a game I want the freedom to install it as often as I like on my computers, without limitation. I don't mind playing with CD.
Let's see how it will turn out when the game is in sale ...

Re: Spore...
I would say its a deal breaker for me... but I've been wanting to play this for so long that I'll just force my paranoia and hatred of all things uber-corporate behind me for the time being. After all, I doubt the servers will shut down for a long time, and except for when I'm not hooked up to the internet for whatever reason (i have a desktop so that rarely happens) I shouldn't run into problems. Hopefully.
Re: Spore...
I was thinking "man, that sucks, but it probably won't keep me from buying it". Then I went and created a two headed creature with spiky fists and a chin-arm with spikes and eyes on stalks and a C shaped body with wings in the Creature Creator. Then I bought Spore on EA's preorder system.
