So... Soul Calibur
I'm not too crazy about Fighting games in general, I like me some Guilty Gear, King of Fighters, and the occasional Tekken but I can't say I've ever been excited about a new instalment. Soul Calibur, on the other hand, I'm nuts about. I love the franchise for its intuitive and deep combat system (even if the script tends to make me gag: "Justice will previal... Just kidding!" ick). With the last instalment I trained on Soul Calibur II like crazy, watched this little tournament of SC II on 1UP.com several times, and hosted Tournaments of SC II and later SC III for my college fencing team (did the same thing for Super Smash but for my radio show).
Right now I'm psyching myself up with this little video. I'm especially happy to see my favorite fighter (Post Nightmare Seigfried) has the Critical Finish I am most fond of.
Yeah, so do we have any Soul Calibur fans here that I may geek out with until I secure my special edition copy on the 29th?

Kilik for the win!
Sorry. Soul Calibur is one of the few fighting games I'm good at. For whatever reason, I'm really good with Kilik and his giant beat stick.

Re: So... Soul Calibur
Kilik used to be my favorite fighter, I especially loved his ground recovery attacks. However, now that Seigried and his stances are back in the picture Kilik has become a close second for me. Seung Mina like-wise has stepped up in my favorites list since SC III as her move set was tweaked to become more similar to old school Kilik (being that plot wise she gets trained by Edge Master, Kilik's trainer after the temple incident, after SC II).
Re: So... Soul Calibur
Sorry man, the pre-hype for Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 trumps this one very neatly. BERSERKER BARRAGE.
(Just kidding. I'm excited about SC; with the character customization and the star wars characters and the fighting system that's delightfully detailed. My only problem with it is that it's SO much more technical than say, SNK or Tekken - it's no country for button mashers, and you really do need to spend some time on it.)

Re: So... Soul Calibur
Well I always found the engine more welcoming than the type you find with Street Fighter or King of Fighters because it isn't "dial a combo". Instead of forcing you to memorize long lists of arbitrary joystick movements and button presses, Soul Calibur has a fairly simple formula of Horrizontal strike, Verticle Strike, Kick, and moving the joystick to swing in the respective direction.
It is true though, that there is plenty of complexity within timing, namely gaurd impacts and weapon slips. It is very difficult to get these down and may prevent some players from reaching the next level but is neccissary as the franchise does have an objective of punishing button mashers and once those who constantly gaurd (Soul Blade would break your weapon for doing this) with uber dramatic cheesing.
Its not like it fails here, more of a taste thing I suppose. Though if you really want to button mash, give Maxi or Raph a go.
Also, Good news everyone! I figured out a comic for SC IV just now, and its a pretty obvious joke for anyone whos checked out the Critical Finishes already. Blarg, I'm so ready finish up G'nerds. Or maybe "Acclimate" is the better term.

Re: So... Soul Calibur
I played Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast, that is the last one I played (always been a fan of Tekken...).
This new one looks really good though.
PS. Where is my Tag Tournament Tekken?

Re: So... Soul Calibur
I always loved SC2. My favorites were Nightmare, Mitsurugi, Yoshumitsu, and Casandra.
EDIT: Does any one know if 4 is coming to the wii, and if so, who's the special character?

I'm glad 90's style forum signatures don't exist anymore.
Re: So... Soul Calibur
No, SC IV will not hit the Wii, and with the way they're treating the "core" now I wouldn't hold my breath. The PS3 gets Drath Vader and 360 gets Yoda, though there are strong rumors that the special character not on your system can be downloaded or my be included in the special editions.

Re: So... Soul Calibur
Ah, Soul Calibur. The only fighting game at which I can reliably not suck. I tend to go for Xianghua and her "I will spin girlishly and WHACK YOU IN THE STOMACH WITH A SHARP THING" attack (shut up, I've always been bad at remembering combo names) or Seung Mina and her tendency to stab opponents viciously in the groin. It's been a while since I played, though-- I actually didn't know there was another one coming out anytime soon. Cool.
Re: So... Soul Calibur
So if sees "SergeXIII" on PSN thats me. I'm going to level up my characters a little more before putting them in Special Matches, though.

Re: So... Soul Calibur
Sucks, bring it out on Wii and we'll talk. I mean come on, why ignore the Wii? It's not like you'd have to tack on any special controls or anything, and the Soul Caliber franchise has never had anything against Nintendo before. I'm suitably annoyed.
Re: So... Soul Calibur
I would say "Its too weak to play it" but Nintendo has been actively avoiding the core as of now, just look at E3. They probably didn't want to put out the bucks to bring it to their system.

Re: So... Soul Calibur
That was an action adventure, not a fighting game. It did have a PvP mode, but it was a joke more than anything.
