Lost hero
There are certain people who have an impact on us and that can happen in different ways. Though I'd never met him, Mike Wieringo was one of those people for me. No matter what book he was working on, it was always worth it to me to check it out because he always managed to inspire a sense of wonder in me. Having just heard of his passing on Sunday, I don't know what more to say except that it's hard to believe he won't be there anymore. I followed his thrice weekly sketch blog and having that connection made him seem more like a buddy than just a guy behind a four-color curtain.
I'd never heard of him, but the guy had talent. What a shame.

He had a run on Fantastic Four, with Mark Waid, that was cut short by editorial decision, then they were invited back because of public outcry. He was one of the creators of Impulse, the Flash character. He did runs on a couple Spider-Man books, was co-creator of Tellos, and he could sketch like nobody's business. He did several art tutorials in Wizard: TGTC, and that's pretty much just the tip of the iceberg.

My personal tastes in comics caused me never to read anything that he'd had a hand in creating. However, I've always liked his work. In an industry that's more and more rapidly spawning lazy art, his was an example to be held up; a great artist, and a prolific one.
This is a loss to comics.

Reports are that he suffered chest pains and that emergency responders didn’t make it to him in time.
A tragic loss. Nobody should go that early.
