final fantasy with real time fights. just doesn't sound right. course I've only picked up a scarce few of the FF titles over the years, and this one at this early point doesn't seem to interesting.
"how FINAL is Final Fantasy"
interesting fact which you may/may not know- it was originally called final fantasy, because there was only meant to be the one game- after which hironobu sakaguchi (the producer) was meant to retire, and Square were expected to go bankrupt.

After the game sold so well and square's posterior was saved, Sakaguchi et all stayed on to make a sequel. The rest is history.

Also- would anyone agree that the newer 'exotic' themed final fantasies (X, X-2, XII) arent quite as appealing as the old steampunk themed ones. Personally i just feel a little nauseated by all the bright sunlight and brightly ocoloured clothes etc in these modern games (Case Study: Wakka's haircut)

Bring back the big rumbling motorbikes, and the little blue robed men with the pointy hats!

Well the reason I'm all psyched about this is because it looks like the theme of combining technology and fantasy has returned to the series. I loved this as depicted in FFVI, FFVII, and FFVIII, but once Square decided to "return to its roots" with FFIX that disappeared. FFX tried to get back there with machina, but It just didn't cut it.

Midgar was such a unique experience! The Gardens were breath taking! It was so cool to ride that minecart through the Magiteck Factory! I've longed for that same clash of technology and fantasy again, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm hopeful that this next FF will deliver, sure looks the part.

FFX didn't try to get that back; they tried something different entirely.

Anyway, I'm sure there will be tie-in secrets and things with saved games that'll mean you need both kinds of FFXIII to get everything in either game. It'll be just like Pokemon!

They've been throwing screenshots of XII around since before IX came out. They're actually a bit late talking about XIII, all things considered.

Heh, I forgot about that. It's still slightly annoying though :P

Eventually it'll get to the point when they're releasing a FF game every week. At that point millions of die-hard fans will starve to death. Then Squaresoft will be sued by the families and go under. This will be the end of Final Fantasy.

Setting doesn't matter.
Story does.

FFVII was my intro to the FF world and continues to be one of my all time favorite RPGS.

FFVIII was pretty darn good as well, though there was this huge lull in the middle, but once you got past it, the game really picked up and gave you and ending that made all the work worth it.

FFIX was crap.

FFX was short... and while I liked the build your own skill section... it just seemed forced (use this guy for this enemy and this guy for this enemy). Never got into these characters... they all seemed a little shallow.

FFX-2 was embarassing.

I hope XII gets back to a meaty story. Great graphics will never cover up a bad story.

Hate to throw a wrench into arguments, but I'd say that 6 was the first mixture of magic and technology, not 7. And 6 has actually stood up fairly well over the years, probably because SNES nostaliga is still more powerful than PS nostalgia.

Uh....but 6 and 7 both mixed tech with magic. :-? 6 more directly, through magitech and whatnot (want them to release figurines of those mechs, dammit!). 7 through mako.

Anyhow, 7 was also my introduction to Final Fantasy, since I had no Snes or Playstation at the time. I played it on the computer. Still one of my favorites.

8 sucked. Hated it. It was pretty and had good music, but I hated all the characters. Especially Squall. The plot took a turn for the silly and, most of all, the mechanics were HORRIBLE. I look for three things when playing a game- good plot, good characters, and to a lesser extent good mechanics. This one failed all three for me.

9 was a great game with many things wrong with it. The plot was fairly mediocre and the end boss utterly random. Many of the minigames were dumb, though the card game was better than 8's. But some of the characters were great. Zidane, in particular, was SUCH a nice break from Squall and Cloud. He was amusing, spirited, and yet not dumb. Vivi and Freya were also good. Dagger could go jump of a cliff, though. Oy. So personalityless.

10 ties with 7 as my favorite game. I felt that the world was so unique. I liked almost all the characters, the plot was compelling, the system was a hell of a lot of fun, and...well...all round it was just a great game.

10-2.... Okay...I, uh, actually liked it. But for only a few specific reasons. The combat system was actually fun...real time though it was, and changing 'dresses' was just the job system redone. The major reason I liked it was because it finished 10's plot. Don't wanna say too much more. That said, the music was TERRIBLE, most of the costumes mind numbingly bad, and the whole YRP thing was atrocious. Uuugh. Although the intro piano music was quite good.

6- I liked of course. I have a feeling I came to it too late, as I only played it last year. But yeah, loved the characters, the plot, the mix of magic and tech, and the system. Really, you couldn't go wrong.

EH. I played it for a few mins at a game store. I didn't really like it. But I'm not an RPG fan. It looked nice though.

PERSONAL REVIEW!

(omg supah happy fun time wai)

FFI - I haven't managed to finish yet. I can get a little past the Dark Elf and then I just sort of doze off. By the time I wake up, I'm playing FFVII.

FFII & III - Haven't played enough of to have an opinion.

FFIV - My introduction to the series, and still one of my favorites. The story and dialouge - even in the updated Chronicles version - is a bit sketchy, reading more like an outline for a good story than a good story itself, but the characters are pretty neato, the battle system is considered a classic for a reason, and you get to fly to the friggin' moon.

FFV - Haven't played enough of to have an opinion.

FFVI - The best FF game evar. Barely claiming that title over FFTactics, but still. It's got tons of great characters, a killer storyline, a world-busting maniacal clown baddie, classic gameplay, and beautiful graphics. This is the measuring bar for all other FFs.

FFVII - I ached for this game for so long, staring longingly at the TV and magazine ads . . . and was completely satisfied when it lived up to the hype. The story may be incomprehensible at times, but the characters are wonderful (Yuffie and Vincent for the win), and there's a lot of emotion in there. This was the first major attempt at simplifying the armor system (boo), but it added the materia system which spawned a few other neat advancement systems (yay) in later games.

FFVIII - The only reason to play this game is Triple Triad. The only reason.

FFIX - A neat little game. The end boss makes next to no sense, but overall it's very colorful and splashy. Definitely worth playing, but I rather consider this one sort of popcorn for the brain. It needed a little more meat to it, but still a worthy effort.

FFX - Best. Battle system. EVAR. Why oh why did they abandon it in FFX-2?! Why oh why are they probably not going to have it again in FFXII?! I want to level all my characters up at the same time, not have to keep switching them every twenty minutes and run around on the field another two hours in order to keep everyone balanced! I don't want to have to worry about not having the right kind of attack for a certain enemy! I WANT MY FFX BATTLE SYSTEM ON EVERY FF GAME FROM NOW ON DAMMIT

Also, other good stuff about FFX. Yay!

FFX-2 - Even though they ripped my heart out and stomped on it by the changed battle system, I thought this was a pretty durn good game. It's more popcorn for the brain like FFIX, but any game that has Paine in it has my vote. Really, at the very least, it was entertaining, and it actually had a pretty interesting end bad guy.

FFXI - Pfft. Why didn't they just call it FFRPG or FFMMORPG or FFOnline instead of wasting a number? Surely they didn't think they could package it in an anthology later on. Surely they know it's going to fade into obscurity eventually, and people are going to look back at their FF listings and go "Never played FFXI and, here and now twenty years after the fact, I'm never going to get to". Hell, unless they make it free at some point, I'm never going to get to play it, meaning my FF listing will forever include this little mini-rant about how idiotic it was to give it a number instead of sensibly giving it a sub-name like they did with Tactics. Pah.
