Comic Genesis Game Project #462375271271

Post by Mooman »

Hola.

So, the Mooman is thinking about doing a game yadda yadda we all know how these usually work out which is why I was thinking pretty hardcore about it for a long time. It would be a point 'n' click adventure in the style of Monkey Island and all that, using the AGS engine which is easy enough to use. I will not be using any other engines, nor am I willing to make my own engine or have anyone else make one. It's PC only, but that can't be helped currently.

Right-o. Basically, my plan is to have a brand new story set in the 'CG universe', taking place in lots of locations seen in jams and the like. I'm pretty set on having the playable (ie. main) characters being Bob, McDuffies and myself (hurr ego project hurr), so that's not really set to change. I've worked out a great deal of the story already, including a lot of locations and set-pieces, which I shall paste at the end of this post. Be warned, 'tis huge.

The good thing about point 'n' clicks is that you can put a boatload of characters in, hence a boatload of cameos, hence a boatload of you people. The bad thing is that not everyone will get a starring role, and the medium thing is that I'm the one who decides who's what and where and probably why.

So what do I want from you people? IDEAS. Locations, set-pieces, in-jokes, character suggestions, puzzle suggestions, inventory item suggestions, ANYTHING. Right now I dont want people volunteering for 'staff' positions, although I appreciate the gesture, as that can kill off projects quicker than Bob can kill an erection. I'm not guaranteeing the thing'll even get finished anytime but it's always fun to plan these sorts of things. Also, since it's in Acts I could possibly release it in separate acts rather than as a whole finished game.

More technical questions need to be addressed as well, such as what resolution should the thing be in? If I have it in 320 x 240 it'll look crappy but graphics'll be a billion times easier to make, whilst having it in 640 x 480 (or beyond) would look awesome (especially if talented people did drawn background) but characters and animations would be hellacious. Would people be willing to do this etc etc, a lot of crap that needs to be done. This sort of thing is why I'm trying to keep it as 'low staffed' as possible, so it has more possibility of actually becoming a real thing.

So yeah, have a link to a demo I made aaaaages back that some people have already seen. http://rapidshare.de/files/14228121/New ... o.rar.html I'm afraid it's Rapidsuck, but there's not much I can do about that. Also, it's a rar file so if you don't have WinRAR go get it, you crazy fool. Hopefully this'll give you an idea of what I'd like to achieve. There's not much to do in the demo, but you can look at/interact with/talk to pretty much everything, and for extra fun, once you get the grass, use the mouth icon on it three times.

Next post will have a MEGAPASTE of an outline for the plot and game progression. It'll be huge so there.
What a rubbish signature.

This is a MEGAPASTE. I'm pasting this from notepad so formatting may be wonky. It was originally written on another forum so the context may also be wonky. It was also written on the fly so the ideas may be wonky, but it's some good stuff to think about.

*** MEGAPASTE ***

As I was inspired in chat to do more in this, I will make a big stream of consiousness post now detailing m various ideas and plans for this. I haven't forgotten about it, it's just I'm not setting a deadline, nor am I setting any kind of schedule for it. I'll work on it sporadically as long as I'm in the CG community, I guess. Hoorah for uncertainties.

Right.

PROLOGUE - Bob in Prison For Some Reason

This is mainly a 'one room' puzzle for players to get used to the game. Bob escapes his prison cell in the manner stated above ie by digging to the cell below and being let out by assuming the man's identity. At this point there can be a CAMEO as someone plays a prison guard. Bob get's the dude's stuff which leads to some amusing inventory.

Bob now books it away before the police realise their mistake. big-ass cutscene where we get McDuffies in full Hannibal Lector gear being wheeled into a room where Officer CJ (C A M E O) offers him the chance to remove his past felonies if he can hunt down and capture Bob. McDuffies agrees and the tone is set.

ACT 1 - Mooman does things (Player character: Mooman)

Begins with Mooman doing something somewhere when he hears about Bob escaping from the news reporter (a cameo) on the tv. He decides to set after Bob, for reasons unconfirmed. Either he just wants to know what's going on or maybe Bob owes him money or something, someone else can do that bit. Anyway, Mooman leaves his house, perhaps after some comedic dialogue with some random cameo as a roommate or squatter or something.

Mooman sets off into the CG City (whatever it's called). Need ideas for main locations here or some wacky transportation maybe, I dunno. He heads to Bob's house and finds a it cordoned off by police tape as various members of the CG police are on a manhunt for Bob. He decides to try and sneak in to figure out where Bob has gone. A PUZZLE, INDEED.

The act centers around this puzzle, with Mooman going around Bob's house and street to obtain some equipment of some kind to get into Bob's house. Maybe he needs to distract a police officer standing guard? Maybe he needs a grappling hook? Eventually he gets inside bob's room and finds some item that says where Bob is heading. Maybe train tickets or something.

My idea right now is to have the CG forums represented as a small county of some kind with incredibly varied locations. There's the main city and all the countryside around that can house all the wonderful locations and characters that need to be present. Anyway, so Bob's heading somewhere. Maybe to meet with an old acquantance, or however you spell that word, who can help him? Mooman is about to leave when McDuffies comes in and takes the tickets and other evidence. Comical dialogue ensues. McDuff tells Mooman to 'stay out of his way' or something, then leaves. Act ends.

ACT 2 - Bob a Dob Dob (these aren't actual act names) (Player Character: Bob)

Bob is on a train heading somewhere. He realises he left his tickets at home and starts to panic. In the train are lots of lovely cameos. At this point, I just remembered you can have voice acting using the game creation program. A possibility?? Anyway, Bob is accosted by the ticket person. Bob makes an excuse and says he has to go find his ticket. Bob now mills around trying to get out of the situation. This is the main puzzle for the act. He could possibly talk to someone who will give Bob his ticket should Bob retrieve something from the luggage compartment, which is of course locked. Various puzzly stuff here. After the puzzles, Bob eventually is confronted by CG Police and McDuffies, seemingly out of nowhere.

Bob makes his escape by pulling the emergency break and running off down the tracks. At this point they'd be in a tunnel somewhere. He jumps into a side door and barricades himseld in the room. Short puzzle to get out of there (through ventilation shafts maybe?) and he finds himself in a sewer pipe. He runs to the end and hohohoho it's a dam and McDuffies comes up behind him and FUGITIVE REFERENCE. Small puzzle as Bob outwits McDuff and sends him hurtling down the dam. Bob runs off.

ACT 3 - (Player character: McDuff)

McDuff climbs out of the river below and checks in with CJ by radio. Eventually someone drives him back to the city. A short scene about McDuff back at the police station working out where Bob was heading (with maybe RKolter in there as a sciency person, who knows). McDuff works out he was going to the downtown district of CG City and heads there.

The main puzzle here is doing detective stuff as McDuff and asking questions etc. Lots of seedy downtown stuff here, like Pimpette pimping out PAL and Yeahduff ("This is another mess you've got me into" etc etc).

I'm not done but I'm gonna post all this now so that there isn't a power failure or something and I lose all this.

So anyway, McDuff works his way through the clues and things, maybe going through a club of some kind. Eventually he tracks Bob down to whereever he is hiding and we get a scene similar to earlier with McDuff trapping Bob, gun drawn. However, Mooman out of nowhere drops through the ceiling (skylight) in front of Bob and McDuff shoots him out of shock. In the confusion Bob escapes and mcDuffies runs away before having to file any paperwork over Moo's death.

ACT 4 - (Player Character: Mooman)

This whole act deals with what Mooman was doing up to when he got shot. So we have Mooman back in his house or something, telling someone what happened earlier. I have this idea that won't go away that a couple of people, maybe K-Dawg and TLH (since they are buds and I keep drawing them as a duo) are squatting in Mooman's house without paying rent, and he can't get rid of them for some reason. Anyway, these could be who he's talking to. Mooman sets out into the heart of CG City based on evidence from the conversation.

Mooman goes to a pub called 'Off Topic' (HUR HUR HUR). I can't help but see Sortelli as the barman, cleaning numerous glasses at the same time and wiping the bar and whatnot. Anyway, Mooman asks around for Bob and eventually learns that he frequents a club downtown. Mooman heads there, but is denied entry, so must sneak in. Whether this is by disguise or by going round the back or by bribe, I dunno. Anyway, he gets inside. Actually, it's probably better if he sneaks in the back, as then he could be mistaken as a talent act for the night.

He tries to escape and ends up running out on stage where Cookie is performing already. Cookie gets annoyed at someone upstaging her and insults him in song. Mooman naturally responds. Short mini-game here in the style of Monkey Island insult fighting with them rhyming off eachother. Eventually, Mooman wins (cause otherwise the player would feel cheated. At least, that's my excuse.) At the end, McDuff comes in (tied in with earlier) and Mooman runs off. He locks himself out on a fire escape with no way down and heads to the roof.

On the roof there could be a puzzle where he has to get across to another roof to get down or something. There can also be some more cameos up here. Hell, maybe a kind of rooftop party. Eventually Mooman gets across to the other roof and heads for the fire escape only to fall through the roof (skylight covered in soot?) and gets shot etc etc.

Still not done. Posting again.

ACT 5 - (Player character: Bob)

Bob gets lost and finds himself at the mercy of the Mafia. (Faceless Malone? hurr) They recognise Bob and announce there is a reward on Bob's head. Only a small one though, provoking a comedic reaction from Bobby. Bob pleads with them not to turn him in and the Mafia boss agrees to if Bob does something for them. The Boss reads in the newspaper (the one that also has the wanted thing in it) that Bob is a....at this point my brain fails me. basically, the mob guy wants Bob to steal a priceless artifact from the CG museum, and as such Bob needs to have been a master of some skill that would be useful for breaking into museums with high-end security systems installed. Anyway, Bob accepts.

The museum has to be chock-a-block with referential items, such as Rawk Out Comics issue 1 and such, maybe the removed head of the Baron von McDuffies statue. Anyway, Bob and some mafia goons break into the museum. This would involve numerous security devices that must be passed and such. Lots of puzzling here. Eventually they get to the item. I was thinking it could be Kisai's Mallet or something but someone might have a better idea.

They go to steal it when Bob decides this is wrong and triggers the alarm. The goons get pissed and decide that if they're going down, Bob is too. So they keep Bob covered with guns as they wait for the police to arrive. Small puzzle as Bob outwits them (he is getting to be a master of these situations) and then a puzzle sequence as Bob escapes the museum with goons in pursuit. At this point I wanna use that puzzle I mentioned earlier with the cellophane and the red dot scaring the goon into thinking he's been pointed at by a sniper. Bob gets away as Officer CJ and the rest arrest the goons.

ACT 6 - (Playable character: Mooman)

Mooman wakes up in Limbo. Oh hell, RKolter should be here too. Ah well, I'll figure it out later. Anyway, Mooman says he has to get back, but is told that's impossible, as the rules of CG Limbo state that everyone has to die but one person before it all resets. Limbo should be sorta like an old folks home, in terms of what kinda rooms it has and such. Anyway, mucho puzzling through here before Mooman eventually escapes Limbo and makes it back into the world of the living.

ACT 7 - (Playable character: McDuffies)

McDuffies and Officer CJ get chewed out by the Chief of Police (Kelly?) about not catching Bob yet, and the media circus going on at him and the Mayor having his backside etc etc. The Mayor comes in (and it's Kisai, ho ho). Let it be known that the Mooman is sorta running out of brain juice here as he tries to think up this plot on the fly. Anyway, a scene happens where Kisai chews out Kelly and then there can be some romantic beginnings between her and CJ, (unless this is uncomfortable with them irl, cause I know that kinda came up before with Stlaking Evil and I don't want to step on any toes).

Anyway, McDuffies is given just 48 hours to find Bob or he's back in jail.

At this point, the real Mooman wishes he'd thought to put in some kind of foreshadowing of a nasty plot of some kind in the background. Like, so there can be the big twist ending. I'll debate that with myself now. I think it should turn out Bob is innocent of whatever crime he was sent to jail for. He was sent to jail to cover up something done by someone in authority. That person made it so McDuffies was brought on board to find him because McDuff could be taken out easily afterwards and wouldn't have access to police records and stuff to find out what's going on. Mooman wasn't a part of the plan at all, and his involvement should probably be part of what undoes the conspiracy. I really need some help on this.

At this point again, the Mooman really doesn't want to continue for fear of running out of ideas and also because he really wants some feedback before he goes on. Again, there's no guarantee that the game will be made, but even if it doesn't, I had fun writing all this up and hopefully you scallywags will have fun reading it and coming up with other ideas. And that's basically what these projects are about.

I WILL STOP TYPING.

Also, Claude needs to have a shoe store at some point. I believe this was established in chat.

Well one idea from the older incarnations of the game was an 'attack of the sprites' sort of thing. It might be an interesting level in the game, a region or poorly drawn chaos filled with sprite-characters who speak in mangled grammar or L33t

Spriteville would be an obvious cameo here, a sole voice of reason in the mad world.

Perhaps a Vorticus' Massage Parlor may be appropriate as well.

Would there be a "Chat" type location as well, like you have Off-topic? Possibly a run-down district filled with anarchy and prostitution.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

Anarchy? that's everywhere. Sparrow's Little Shop of Horrors, or Sparrow's Shop of Curiosities would make interesting locations.

Rebellion HQ . . . and the Baron von McDuffies statue (properly defaced)!

And Anarchy/Capitalist/CommieSpaces.

Van's House of Profanity . . . the Keenlympix Stadium . . . Billionaire Playmonkey Keon Dawg's Sately Manor . . .

So many possibilities.

Perfect for the "seedy downtown" bit where duffies is going around asking questions... :D

And if I'm selling people on a street corner.. can I have a Tynan? If you're not using him elsewhere. He's my uber-faithful manho, after all.

I can definately see this in it, maybe in a disused state. If not as a location, maybe in the skyline, with a few lines about it should the player choose to look at it in the distance or something.
Orion wrote:Attack of the Sprites stuff
The problem here is that that would be quite a major plot point, and would have to be worked throughout somehow.

Yeah, this'd be cool. Maybe as a shop in the background or as an advert in a paper/noticeboard/tv or something.

An idea that comes to my mind is maybe there could be a cinema multiplex in the background at some point showing Doombees and Doombees II: The Revenge or some other cheesy thing. I like Doombees.

I like the mirror universe idea, but again t'would be a big-ass plot point. Should be able to put some kind of reference though.

Hmm, theRebellion HQ or the Anarchyspace HQ, in a kinda abandoned state, could be where McDuff confronts Bob the second time when Moo gets shot. Would be a nice location for it.

Why thank you. Maybe the club could be called something to do with chat? I was imagining the club as an old 20s noir type club with roullette and crap. Could be cool.

A keencruise reference would be something I'd push for myself =]

For city transportation I think that something entirely rediculous should be created. However, I am personally fond of just monorails, I like how they feel all futurey without being actually... well futury.

An idea from my sleep deprived brain would be to have a transportation system be basically meat hooks set up on a moving track. The hooks hang down from the track above and yto hitch a ride you just step into the path of the hooks. They grab you and away you go. I'm wondering why I consider this idea anywhere near good...

The city could potentially have itself broken up into areas with like minded creations. Such as "Little Japan: Where all your monstrously large eyed dreams come true" inhabited by animeish people. If a sprite place existed it'd like be similar to this (but on the outskirts of town and really run down, and all the buildings are perfectly identical save for maybe some recoloring). P.S. Thanks for the compliment Orion =]

If there's mafia, we'd probably need the docks (keencruise here perhaps), which I'm pretty sure you didn't already say you wanted (my brain is slipping). Not sure where but a full out "Crazy Sciences" lab would be nice to look at.

For more mundane spots, a park, with an extravagent fountain of someone/s. Military base left over from the CG/DD wars abandoned. I can think of random places as much as the next guy but I'm too tireed to think of cool stuff to go with them. That said I'll offer you audio help if you so need it. I'm not amazing but I can do voice work, and possibly format all the sounds to be better size effecient and the same quality, but I suspect you have those abilities yourself. =]

Or at least the locations, you know, the bar I hang out in, or you could do the sequence with the demon.

And for the massage thing poster, there should be Vorticus on it.
Also in the chapter where mooman needs to go inside the house, perhaps Derenge would be the guard and the way to "distract" him would be to bring a bear (what fate be of him is left up to you).

Another background location: a rundown, abandoned temple of Dark Magician worshippers. Come to think of it, you could have some ads for Claudaism as the one path to salvation and Outrage sprinkled about.
