Six Seconds - Style / Layout?

Post by Faileas »

Well, Six Seconds is over 50 pages now and I like to think that the look and design of the comic have been getting better over the past few months. Chapter 3 is starting to loom, however, and since I'm trying to keep major style shifts to between chapters now's the time to start contemplating one if I'm going to...

...which is basically a long-winded way of asking if anyone has any thoughts, comments, or feedback.

Thanks!

As a hands-on studio artist as well as someone who has spent many, many hours working with 3d software like Maya, I sort of have a stigma against 3d comics in general, and ones that use any stock, pre-created images as well. It's really hard to break out of the dullness of models you work with, more often than not the fact that they are so realistic clashes with the fact that the poses are often unnatural.

However, I just read through your archives and I like what you're doing with it; the story itself is what stands out as the most interesting. I'll just say that you got me to read all the way through without my hoity-toity 3d bias kicking in. I think the structure and more importantly the pacing are doing well, and I definitely see an improvement over time.

Six Seconds is one of only 2 3D comics I have been able to read and keep reading. As Snackbot kinda says, your comic breaks out of the bad rep that somehow 3D comics have managed to take on. I think that many other 3d comics rely too much on either the art or the story, but one of those will only keep readers coming back for so long. Six Seconds has both in fairly large shares, the pace is excellent and the characters are original. You also have that lovely option of voting to see the next page early, which I <3. I <3 it muchly.

What I want to see is a little more connection between the characters and what's happening. Depending on the length of the story, authors have a lot of leeway on deciding when to introduce this, but I'm definitely hoping it's going to be soon. You switched arcs RIGHT when you were about to reveal something big, and while I know it's not random, I JUST WANNA KNOW NOW! But, don't give in, your pace, man, your pace. (If I bribe you, will you tell me?)

What I like best is how the 3d characters are set up in a way that this comic could be drawn if so chosen. It's almost like a medium between the styles. I can't really explain it other that I could envision the art as 2d at the same time as 3d. And I, being a comic artist who loves drawn work, like to see and read something I can relate to in that way.

Let's see...I love the monsters and the facial expressions. And the lighting in certain panels is really awesome. I do think the site could use a little prettying up though. It's very plain, which, while not bad, doesn't make new readers want to stay and browse through any secondary pages. Also, navigation clarification for the content of pages might be in order. Comments and Notes, while different, somewhat belie the content. *glomps you for the link*

Thanks for the feedback! I’m glad to hear we’re dodging some of the 3D comic stigma. I have this grand plan that someday I’ll have a comic made completely from home-grown models, but that’s still a while off. I’m also glad to hear that the pacing is doing okay. That was something I was particularly worried about.

What is much closer on the “to be done” schedule is a website re-haul. I’d been playing with the idea before but will make sure to do it now… and I’ll definitely be taking your suggestions (and your websites) into account, Kez. :)

And as for characters and events, the first two chapters are very much “intro chapters,” as is chapter three, really, but it starts to weave a few of the characters. Come chapter four, though, the connections should be more obvious.

Thanks again for your comments!
