Colouring for n00bz

I'M A COLOURING NOOB

All I know is, "Try to stay inside the lines."

The purpose of this thread is to tell the colouring n00b basic information on how to add colour to artworks in a visually appealing fashion.

That's all you'll ever need. I'm sorry if I posted this more than one, but it's an invaluable collection of resources. Some of them are stupid, but most of them are pretty good (since I sorted them by favorites. ;) )

One key thing you need to remember about coloring is that you can't just pick random colors. You can't randomly point and go, "Fuschia, I choose you! Burnt Sienna, combine!". The colors have to glue. The colors have to be...uh...harmonious? (What's a better word? Gah...whatever.)

So planning, planning. Use fixed palletes.

Awesome! It's so easy I could punch a dog!

I'll practice shading/better coloring later, I am unfortunately low on time and high on not caring.

Something I've just started to work on: Have a dominant color (warm vs. cool), as the painting/illustration will look more interesting, and balanced.

It would also be a good idea to learn about color theory, the color wheel and so on.

God this is awesome. I used that technique, and (having nothing new to color) redid this:

(OK, so that was from way back when, but still!)

into this:

Truly an awesome tutorial

The way your current banner is colored works fairly well, as the color is used sparingly, where needed.

If in doubt, think present day web design vs. 1995 web design.

Hmph. I'm still looking for something to help a colorblind artist work with color.

I mean, what the hell are 'complementary colors'? Are you seriously telling me that purple and yellow look good together? :)

For now, I'm sticking with primary colors, and shades/blends of them.

In my experiance, complementary colors are the two colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel. Most of the time they do not look good together. I have no idea why they use "Complementary".

Coloring tutorial It's a little like coloring boot camp. Without the boots.
