Software for 3d/animated webcomics?

Post by Hiye »

Hello, and pardon my daftness. I've recently been delving through the 3d/CGI webcomics and found some of their rendering and detail amazing, so I've decided to also give it a shot. Thing is, I've found about a dozen programs out there that seem to deal with this kind of stuff: Lightwave.. Bryce.. 3D-something-or-other.. Poser.. Maya, etc., and I have no idea what to start with.

Could anyone recommend a good animation/3D rendering program for a novice who's willing to learn to work with it seriously? I'm not expecting to emulate Pixar's animation quite yet  so I just need something that's fairly intuitive and affordable. Any suggestions?

By the way, I was going to settle on Maya. Is there anyone here who's tried it and can give some advice on whether or not to get it? I'd be eternally grateful.

I bid you gratitude in advance. Er.. yeah. :)

Maya doesn't fit the bill of easy to use or inexpensive, just a warning.

Free Maya

Check their site: http://www.aliaswavefront.com/eng/produ ... ndex.shtml. Last I checked they have a free version one can use so long as it is not for commercial puproses. It is called Maya Learning Edition. it might work for you; it didn't work for me but the other versions don't work on mine either.

Radified suggested 3D Studio Max, Maya, and Soft Image as the best for 3D animation.

Oh dear lord are you in for a world of brain hurt! I got a hold of a copy of 3d studio max and I couldn't make sense of it even after hours of tweaking and flipping through the tutorials. Something about putting blocks together and manipulating them. There is a reason you need a years worth of classes on top of natural skill to use these damn things!

That asside I don't like any of the 3d generated comics out there. Even though I know better, it feels like someone took clips of a video and cut and pasted them to comic format.

Though if you where planning on making videos. THAT would be cool!

Good luck!
