Should my comicpages be in color or grayscale, or toned?

Post by Prettysenshi »

I'm always experimenting with my webcomic in terms of art style. One can call me inconsistant, if you will  . Anyway, I got some new tones and was wondering if I should use them in my comic.

http://arcadia.comicgenesis.com If you go to my comic now, my art was done using a mouse, and CG'ed on the computer.

http://arcadia.comicgenesis.com/d/20050302.html With this page, I scanned it, and it was done in Grayscale.

I never toned any of my pages, but still give me your opinion on whether I should try it out.

So, with that said, which style to you think is better. CG, grayscale, or in your personal opinion, toned?

I'd like to see it in screentone, for comparison, but I think you should draw it then scan it, and try all three to see which one would be the best. The mouse drawn doesn't look too bad, but I prefer your hand drawn.

^.^ Here are some websites with free screentones. I used many of them myself on my first attempt at screentones.

And I truely think you should do the comic hand drawn, I always felt that some people are cheating their talents by using a mouse. (that or you can always buy a tablet. Wacoms are great! )

I agree with you. I do draw better without a mouse, but sometimes I become lazy and decide just not to scan, which happens quite often. Thank you for the comment on prefer my scanned works. I get it alot, but it always feels nice.

Um, yeah, those sites for screentones are great. In fact, I went to the last one just today to get some tones, however, I had to convert all of the tones that I downloaded to .xcf files, b/c I use GIMP. I'm far to cheap to afford Photoshop  . I don't have money like that to spend. GIMP is still good though.

So, do you know anyway I can get tones that aren't Photoshop only?

No clue whatsoever on the non-photoshop. I wasn't too fond of the look of GIMP personally, but I think if you google it, you might be able to find something good.

edit - ^.^ Here is the google list, hope you find something useful here!

^.^ No problem. I like helping other webcomic artists. It's a big world, and it's hard to make it in it without a little help. :D We all learn from each other. I hope you find something you could use...!

Emm 2 of those above links are broken...

But I liked the hand-drawn a lot better. I can't tell if it would look better coloured or not, but I thought the greyscale suited quite well.

If you like penguins, ninjas, and/or the colour blue, come see!
