Well.. From what I can tell, the thumb should probably be thinner because chances are it's being held farther away than the pinkie finger.. And it needs to be slightly more squareish on the thumb side of the wrist... But if you leave the tip of the thumb and the base the same size and make the middle smaller, it should look right...
Did anything I just say make sense? @.o

Guns:
If he's not shooting the gun, his finger shouldn't even be touching the trigger.

A couple pics of a safety test for an M-1911 pistol.

Notice here how he's holding the gun so that he can point with his index finger and fire with his middle finger.

Notice in figure 3.3 how he's not touching the trigger while messing with the gun.

While the message of this page is a little grisly (1000 soldiers who died in Iraq), it is an interesting resource. As TheBladeRoden2 mentioned, your character is missing a forehead. Notice that your character has about as much forehead showing as the men in the above link wearing hats. Those without hats have a substantial forehead, even if they have hair. (These are soldiers, most don't have hair. *shrug*)
Also notice that your character doesn't have much of a chin.

This tutorial shows the proportions of a face based on the width of they eyes.
http://www2.evansville.edu/drawinglab/face.html
This one shows a slightly simpler version:
1. Draw an oval for the face. The oval is taller than it is wide.
2. The eyes are halfway between the top and bottom of the oval.
3. The nose is halfway between the eye line and the chin.
4. The mouth is halfway between the nose line and the chin.
5. The ears fall between the eye line and the mouth line.

I always have a little mirror by my side when I'm drawing, so if I need to draw a right hand, I look at my left in the mirror.
