Asking for a critique-

Post by Gant360 »

I've been pretty much putting all of my free time into my webcomic The Reset Button and I was hoping for a few pointers to make it better. The Link's below, and I really appreciate it!

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cannot have a DOCTYPE declaration outside of a prolog. Error processing resource 'http://theresetbutton.comicgenesis.com/'....

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
----------^

You might want to look at that.

Yea...I don't know why that shows up on some computers. I'm trying to figure it out as we speak...but it works on other computers

Same deal, can't critique--get the same error page. =(

Running IE6 and refusing adamently to change it, for reference, and XP.

Worth saying it does show up on Firefox, but as not everyone uses Firefox this is unacceptable. You at least require a 'you have to read this on Firefox or IE7' or something... I dunno if it works on IE7, mind... that still means I won't read it because I won't do anything I can't do on IE. =P No offense, personal preference here, IE is my default browser and I have this thing against tabs.

So what you NEED to do is make sure your site layout--as sexy as it is--works correctly in all browsers. Preferably find a friend with a Mac too, or download and install Safari and Opera yourself, those four are the main browsers, and then make sure your site works in them all.

It's evident that, because it's opening on Firefox for me, it works in Firefox 2... but not IE6. This is a problem for you because you want people who aren't just using a higher end browser to be able to read your webpage. Right? Right. Reminder on the error...

I'd say it's pretty simple: your XML page is simply not readable by IE. Maybe change your style sheet to CSS instead of XSL or something?

Anyway, for the comic you have up now, the art style looks good. I do like your web design, it's just... not everyone uses Firefox, not everyone always will, you need to have something up there BESIDES the error, at least, to say 'hey, this site can only be viewed in these browsers...' at the VERY least. At the best? Working well in all the browsers.

Anyway, the art style is cute and funny, I can't say I like the black hole eyes much but I haven't read through enough archive to see if it's all like that. The transparent speech bubbles are cute but here and there you should work on the size and arranging your text a wee bit better, so that it goes more towards smallest row to widest, instead of that variety. The first narrator bubble bugged me because of all the variety in the stuff towards the end of the line, jerked me out a bit.

The coloring is cute and bold and stands out, really suiting a humorous comic. The textures in the grass and stuff don't. Play around and maybe do textury stuff on your own... scribbly stuff in the background rather than photo textures might look a bit better... like the detail in the bricks, for example, how you used the stroking lines to kinda indicate them. Looks good. Stuff like your grass should look like that too.

This is all dragged out of the current comic, of course. Not gonna read on because I hate using Firefox.

Also, I like the way you put in the chatbox underneath. XD

If you get it working in IE, I'll read through a bit more and add more to my critique than just the 'one page assumptions'. Writing and general handle on stuff and all.

I can't seem to figure out how to get it working in IE, but I found out that it does work in Opera and Safari...
