please guys, tick the box to leave your sig out!
The wind whipped through De'Vs fur, the motion making slight rippling sounds...like sheets flapping lightly in the wind. Flare lay back, her mind processing all that had happened...the Aboleths first attack..the birds...Lightning leaping out into the air...and smashing down onto the Aboleth like a bolt of silver from the sky...the Aboleth crushing him....
...and that awful cracking sound......
Flare jumped - alarmed as she came back to reality..she had been day dreaming...lost in the memories of the day. She shook her head, to try and clear her mind....but the cracking sound haunted her, biting at her thoughts...leaning forwardm she grabbed hold of a handful of hair and tugged sharply, De'V veering right to swoop down to the ocean cave....
The massive burst of energy that Flare had released earlier that day had carved out a concave that still smoldered, despite the rain having fallen heavily for over an hour.....testimony to the pure heat...
Down below...was the dark smear that was Lightnings blood.....Flare swallowed back the now massive lump in her throat...her keen eyes spotted the Aboleths remains.....De'Volder saw them too....
He banked sharply, zooming straight at the ocean so fast that Flare felt like she would be blown off...or at leats be hurled at the rock when he pulled up to stop! With less than a second before slamming into the jagged ocean rocks, De'V pulled up, curving his body to absorb the kinetic energy of his descent...the resulting, swinging G-force made Flares stomach swim....now she knew why Lightning loved to fly with De'V! What a rush!
He alighted on the rocks with cat-like grace, his wings folding down to tuck up neatly against the shimmering fur. Flare sliding off him and onto the closest rock to the Aboleths remains.....Flare gagged, the sickening smell of charred flesh and ammonia overpowering...even De'V looked ill.
Flare stepped onto the squishy remains, searching for the mouth of the beast......De'V reached over her, dragging the carcass out of the water with little effort, allowing her to see better. De'V cast a globe of soft light, that welled through his paws, Flare likening the look to that of a lighthouse. Peering back at the body, she found what she was looking for..the beak....
Pushing her hands deep into the slimy folds, she pushed upwards, searching through the slimy stink until she felt the folds of its brain...she dug her fingers in...and pulled....
The brain heled back for a moment, the it gave way, gushing forth in sloppy folds, like over cooked lasagne sheets to splat against the ground. De'Volder breathed in...Flare braced herself and he spewed forth a great gust of flame, seearing away all trace of brain matter...no magic user could read or even animate this pitiful creature again...
Flare and De'V were also unable to tell who had sent the creature to attack them.....
Flare was unharmed by the Dragonflame, no flame could beat her own inner fire, but it did bring her to a light sweat. Flare grinned and turned to De'Volder. De'V stared back, puzzled "why the smile... Flare?" annoyance clear on his face...
"Think about it De'V" she replied...De'V paused, unsure of where she was going with this...then it hit him..."How does the hunted catch the hunter..." he breathed through smiling lips..."Now I know why Lightning loved you so much... you are so smart!" she said, scratching his ears...a twinge of pain stung them both, but passed quickly at the prospect of sundering the perpetrator to ash.....
A trap needed to be set...and the bait would be delicious!

From the edges of the ocean...the creatures watched...analysing and taking notes on the two peering over the carcass. The waves bobbed them along gently, keeping them hidden from sight...even if they were spotted, such tiny creatures would be considered an irrelevant threat...especially to beings as powerful as these....
In fact, there was no threat from those who watched, for attack was not the role of these fledgling beings, but information gatherers they were exceedingly good at. The largest of the group let go of the rock edge and drifted away with the current, satisfied with what it had seen....the others quickly following behind it......
Everything that had been said, eveything had been memorised down tot he last sylable. Information was power and Power....well power let you control things. The tiny creature, though the largest of its kind in these waters, desired power of its own...It wished to be the largest being in the ocean and could....NO, IT WOULD! achieve this and this girl and her oversized pet cat would be the key to its success.....
********
Flare couldnt stop grinning....laying a trap and the excitement it brought on was such a thrill. She squeezed De'Vs massive paw, then leapt up onto his back and made herself comfortable. The Aboleths body lay festering in the ocean swell, its remains pounding against the rocks....
The Aboleth itself would be the bait and they would be the blade that falls from the sky!
*******
The spy crab travelled for over four hours, battling furiously against the ocean tides to get to its destination. Deep below the surface, an ancient city bristled with life. It made its way through the teeming pools, warmed gently by underwater volcanic vents to reach the inner sanctum of its Master......
The Masters home loomed out of the darkness, a huge underwater cave, that twinkled with the glow of a myriad of colors.....all from the treasure trove of an ancient water Dragon named Poseidon......
The spy crab swam to the cave floor and lay itself prostrate in front of its mighty Lord...." I bring news of the human woman....and of the furred Dragon, your Lordship" the crabs mandibles clicked and chittered....as it divulged all it had heard......
A deep rumbling could be felt as much as heard as the Water Dragon replied.."You have done well my spy and you shall be rewarded for your efforts..."
The crab bowed low, crushing claws bent wide in supplication..."I do for the will of my Master, not for personal gain". Poseidon smiled and it was in no way a happy smile, "You are not a good liar, you should not even try....your report is accurate, you were not alone on your mission." The crab perked up, anxiously looking around to see who had reported to the Master first.....
There behind Posiedon was Mer`Duun, a shapeshifting merfolk.....

Another thing, please guys, when you are posting a reply...-which I do love to hear- please de-select the Attach signatures box below the window, but above the Submit button. This helps to keep the story in view, without in-putting too much written distraction, or page stretching with signatures.
Thankyou

The Merfolk moved from behind the podium, swimming in a graceful arc....the crab stiffened...merfolk were never to be trusted and Mer' duun was even less trustworthy than most. Despite being a tiny crab in comparison to the Merman, it stood its ground...
Mer' Duun smiled, as Poseidon spoke " You haved served me well as a spy...." Mer' Duun removed his trident and poised to throw, ready to kill the crab and take its place as Poseidons elite spy.....his smile faded instantly as Poseidon finished speaking "that is why I grant you your wish...fight each other to the death and the winner takes all!"
Mer' Duun balked as the crab grew to gigantic proportions, but was still confident of a win....after all, bulk didnt win battles underwater......he readied his trident and braced for the crabs charge.....
The crab was now gigantic, easily four times the size of the Merman, its claws alone making up a fifth of its total weight and its shell was thicker than plate armor.......
Poseidon breathed in, a huge sucking vortex of liquid streamed through his nostrils and he laughed evilly as his two spies sized each other up...either way, he would gain a valuable tool in his schemes...if the crab won, he would have a Behemoth General for his fodder army...and if the skinny merman won.....well...Merfolk always tasted good.....
*******
Flare and De'V left the cliff face and searched for a place to rest. Exhaustion had caught up with them both and they needed to restore their energy. Flare pointed out a small outcrop of rocks , where she caught sight of a deer, De'V streaming like an arrow.....his stomach growling all the way....
His claws hooked the deer in mid bound and he swiftly broke its neck, not wanting it to suffer. Its body would nourish them both, at least cooking it would be easy....he whirled again, spotting a clearing in the nearby forest. Landing inside it softly, he let Flare off and lay the deer on the ground. Surprisingly, he felt a twinge of envy for that deer, at least its death had been quick and painless....the same could not be said for Aansteken, who's body shattered to dust....
The forest was alive with the sounds of birds, the chirrup of crickets and other night-time animals. Out of the darkness, De'V roared, a lamenting cry of anguish for the loss of his love.....silence followed....all the creatures of the forest scared witless with fear.....
Flare felt as much as heard that cry, for it was a feeling she herself was suffering, she added her own cry which echoed his perfectly in empathy. They roared together again, De'Vs loud enough to drown out everything, including Flare's....anger spent, they sat down to dinner, perfectly cooked with thanks to Flare......that night, they slept fitfully but awoke somewhat refreshed......
The forest was dead silent for three days afterwards.......

Can you hurry up and update!? I am so dying to know what happens to the merman! -you cant kill the merman! merpeople are cool!-
I like how you wrote about the deer, and how its death was swift and painless in comparison to being shattered. That part sent chills through me and all i could think of was the T-1000 from terminator 2 after it got hit with liquid nitrogen.....imagine shattering the body into dust though!? argg pain!
After reading your story and you said the forest was silent for three days, I thought you meant that you wouldnt be back for three days to write, but its now been six days...where are you?

Mer'Duun jabbed outward with his trident, the supersharp tines scratching deep furrows into the Behemoth Crabs plate-like armor. The crab responded with a slow but powerful swipe that sent the merman reeling.
Poseidon smiled in anticipation, the next blow could finish the skinny merman and end this. Poseidon wanted his crab spy to win, not just because merpeople tasted good, but it would solidify the fear the sea people felt for him. The crab had served him well for so long, Poseidon felt a respect for the lesser being.
Few beings ever treated Poseidon with anything other than fear, or hatred. But this tiny crab had been the closest thing to a friend that Poseidon had ever had. Poseidon jumped slightly, as the merman's trident swept through the water, its lethal tines singing a death knell. The blades drove deep into the crabs soft underbelly, blood spurting forth in a slow, swilring mist. Poseidon salivated at the sight of the blood.....
******
Flare and De'V awoke after a fitful night of sleeping. The deer had sustained them exceptionally well, both of them feeling healthier, though the previous day wore heavy on their minds. It was time to spring the trap. De'V groomed his fur while Flare sorted out their belongings. Flare went through Lightning's belongings....
In his bag was travel rations, a few spell scrolls and minor wands, a teleportation ring and a small vial of healing elixer. Flare couldnt believe how all this fit into such a small bag, but gasped when she pulled out a soft cloth package, lovingly wrapped. Written on the front in his neat handwriting, was Flares name....and a Happy Birthday message.....
Flare burst into tears...De'V alarmed at the spontaneous crying, turned around in alarm to face her. Flares rested her face against the soft cloth pack and she buried her tears in the fabric. De'V's features softened as he placed a massive paw around her.
"You must be strong Flare" he murmered, unwanting to say it out loud "you must be strong for the both of you...he would not wnat you to cry for him" as soon as those words passed from his lips, he wanted to take them back...
Flare looked to De'V, and spoke, her voice thick with hurt and anguish "I know De'V, its just hard to let him go, dont want to let him go....."the emotion became too much and she could speak no longer...
"Then lets get the bastard who made this happen!" De'Vs cat-like orbs glinted maliciously "make them pay for their sins" Flare sniffled back tears and wiped her eyes on here cloak. She opened the package from Lightning and inside......

Heya Sara, the only problem with posting it on DeviantArt, is the inability tp do short updates. When the story gets a bit longer, I will more than likely post the whole thing in there for others to read.
As for a specific end..... no end in the plans. Even if no-one wants to read it in here, I will still write it and keep it in my stories file in my computer. I first started this story as an RPG for Hope and I to write, but it didnt end up that way.
I am glad you like it, I enjoy writing it! short enough to be grabby, but not too long as to get boring. I would like to add pics to it, but...time constraints etc etc.
Now....back to the story.....positions monkey on typewriter "write me a story damn you!" -monkey quivers in fear-

The fight continued, becoming ever more bloody as the combatants became more aggressive, more decietful. Each had scored major bkows on one another, the damage showing all too painfully. Poseidon was edgy with anticipation and with a little regret. He had commanded them to fight to the death, to see who would be his Champion....
He had hoped that the crab would win, but each time as the crabs claws raked a mark across that mer-flesh, he would twinge in pain as though it was he himself who took the blow....he wanted the mer-man to win too! Yet as the tined blade drove into hard shell and white blood trailed away, he felt that familiar sting of loss.....
"What to do?" he said out loud, his deep booming voice echoing off the cave walls. The two combatants did not seem to have heard him as they continued their deadly trade off. POseidon mused at the potential outcome if he stopped the fight...would the merman take the momentary break to finish the crab? or would the crab make a final charge and crush the sea-elf into mush?
The possibilites seemed equally correct, so, Poseidon did what he had to do to end the battle and keep both of them alive......

Inside the package...
Flare had opened the package and inside was a cloak of the softest fabric. It was black in color, with silver trimmings along the neck and down one side. At the top, a black hood could be pulled over ones head, with the hood acting as a helmet. The cloak shimmered with multiple enchantments, Flare cast a Sense Item spell to learn what they were.
Absorb Energy, See in Total Darkness, See Aura and Dimensional Step were woven into the defense capabilities, but it was the last spell, a new spell that she had never heard of, let alone used..... Create Summon....
Flares mind reeled at the thought...."was it possible to create Summoned Entities?" Flare shared the knowledge with De'V, who nodded that it was possible and often done to greater beings before their death....
"Aansteken has been turned into a Summon, hasnt she?" Flare stated as much as asked. De'V turned away and she got her answer. The chance of Aansteken being returned to them alive was remote, unless they could find the Mage who did this to her, she would forever remain a magical tool or weapon.
"Then we have to get started, someone owes us for our loss and its time to collect!" Flare burned with motivation, De'V turned to her and smiled. "Aanstekenhemel was right to choose you as her rider, and I am equally honored to have you! Put your new cloak on and wear it with pride, for now, we take to the skies and find our enemies!"
Flare yanked off her old travel cloak and wrapped it around her belongings. Whipping the new one out and around her shoulders, she tightened the clasp and it merged to her body like a protective shadow. De'Vs head turned to face her, whistled in awe as the new cloak took its first shaping. It was now malleable as cloth, but tougher than Dwarven chainmail. Flare stood, testing the cloaks adaptablity...
The cloak unfurled as she stood, billowing lightly in the breeze.
"Way cool!" Flare shouted and sat back down as De'V readied to fly....

Power - it was the one thing and the one thing only that Poseidon craved. His power extended beyond more than just the Mortal Plane. As Lord of the Elemental Plane of Water, his strength was here in the Ocean.
But Poseidon was capable of living on land just as effectively, and hunting there was especially fun for him. His webbed hands and feet adding to the ferocious appearance, not to mention the seaweed covered spines along his back.
Poseidons horns were the only thing not covered in seaweed. Glistening like polished ivory, they were shaped like triceratops horns in a triangular pattern. Oddly enough, they were set with one above his forehead and the other two on either side of his maw. For anyone who had to guess as to the functionality, it was best used to spear into a whale or dolphin at high speed.
Poseidon made a game of hunting whales, by speeding out of the ocean depths and plunging head first, mouth open into the side of the poor creature. From a side on view, Poseidon would look like a multi-bladed harpoon, thrown like an arrow from the Gods.....
To assert his power, he would use anything he had at his disposal, from weapons to magic, psionics to brute strength. And few could withstand the assault.....
Mer'Duun and the Behemoth, locked in a combat to the death....did not notice as Poseidon struck them both with a powerful mind control spell. The first blast took Mer'Duun completely under control, stopping him and sending his body into a rigid state.
A second blast hit the Behemoth and then a third and a fourth. The spells bouncing off like light through a prism. A fifth and final one ended the reflection and sent the crab reeling backwards. Its claws drooped and fell against the sea floor...limp and unmoving....
Poseidon now had two new mind slaves, perfectly loyal, perfectly controllable...he smiled widely..."yes" he thought. That would be how he would justify it. He got to see blood, got to relish a fight and savour its flavor and, he didnt lose one to Death....two Generals for his Armies....
Poseidon's booming laughter could be heard echoing among the deep for miles around....all who dwelt there knew that Doom was coming in the form of a Water Dragon....
.....and its name was Poseidon.....

Mer'Duun awoke on the floor of a large cavern, he was laying on something hard, but shiny. He took a look around, it was rounded with sharpened edges on all sides. At one edge, was stalks, like .....Mer'Duun shuddered and moved away, it was eyes, crabs eyes!
The eyes swivelled in their sockets and turned to view him. Mer'duun knew he should feel repulsed, he hated crustaceans, except when they were edible! BUt for soem reason, this crab was his friend, someone he wanted to look out for, care for like a brother....
Poseidons mind control was strong. Strong enough to make racial enemies friends. There would be no problems from these two. Poseidon watched them through a scrying bowl, seeing them interact with each other. For one finalk test before sending them on their ission, he entered the scrying pools wtaers....and emerged in their midst...
******
Mer'Duun patted his new 'friend' on the head, just above its eyes salks, like he knew it would like. The crab tilted slightly, to allow him a better angle to scratch. The merman obliged. Poseidon emerged like a sea serpent through a Tidal Rip, flowing his snake-like body through the dimensional step.
Poseidon gave out his orders..."find the woman...bring her here...kill the Cat" he growled. Mer'Duun accepted with glee the task appointed to him, only wishing to please the Master. The Behemoth crab, who had been so hard to ensorcel, spoke the question "how do we bring her back to you alive Master? she does not have gills and cannot breath underwater..."
Poseidon narrowed his eyes at the crab "Do you believe me so stupid as to not have thought of that already?" The Crab bowed low, claws opened wide in supplication, "No my Lord, merely I wish to know how you have prepared us to do this task for you. I am not a mage, nor do I posses the artfifacts capable of making her like ocean folk"
Poseidon breathed outward, a foul, disgusting breath that reeked of rotten whale and from the still water a circlet appeared. Made of whale bone and carved magnificently with a myriad of runes, it shimmered with archaic power.
"The bracelet will allow her to breathe as a fish underwater, but first...she must drown for the bracelt to work."
Mer'Duun nodded and the crab waved its stalks...they both knew what to do. Poseidon handed another item over, this one he gave to Mer'Duun. A trident of darkened steel the spoke of electrical power. The soul of a Greater Sea-serpent resided inside, seething with storm energy...
"A weapon against the fire woman...use it wisely"
Poseidons last words were felt rather than heard as he had slipped back into the Tidal Rip and disappeared......
Mer'Duun and Crab set off immediately, Mer'Duun riding the crabs back as the crab propelled itself through the water at high speed, heading for the Aboleths remains and to the cliff where the battle had taken place.....

De'V launched, his powerful hind muscles propelling him into the air with great speed. Flare leaned back to avoid the wind whiping at her face. It was time to face their enemy and bring justice to them.
Trees and rocks flew by as De'V soared past, wind rippling his fur and making it look alive. Within moments, the land became less populated by trees and the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves lapping against the rocks could be heard....
******
Mer'Duun and the Behemoth sat motionless on the ocean floor, deep beneath the waves. Staying out of view until the appropriate moment when a wave would obscure them from sight. It was at that time they would strike.....
******
De'V landed once more beside the body of the Aboleth, the stench from its two day old carcass was almost unbearable. Flare dismounted, surveying the water from a lower vantage point, peering beneath the glare reflecting off the water, trying to see through the oily swill floating on the surface....
What exactly she was searching for, she did not know. Any sign would help, any small clue that could help lead them to their enemy was a start. It came as a complete shock when the merman burst forth from the water and grabbed her by the wrist... the sheer weight of the merman dragged her under the water before she or De'Volder could catch herself...
De'V sprang to action, ready to plunge his huge head under water, but the massive claws of the Behemoth crab blocked his path..."FLARE!!!!" he bellowed loudly "FLARE!" as Flare disappeared beneath the waves........

Mer'Duun dragged Flare downward, his strength fueled by the element of surprise. Flare had just barely drawn breath before she was pulled deep under water. In mere moments, her ears were pounding with the pressure of the water all around her and the light filtering down from the remaining sun barely permeated the water.
Flare could hold her breath for over a minute, but the weight of the water and her own struggling was taking its toll on her oxygen supply. She began flailing out at her attacker with her legs, but the attackers grip was too strong. Firing off her magic down here would do just as much damage to her as it would the merman, the severe heat would convert the water to steam and cook them both...
Flares magic was Fire and mixing it with its opposing element was dangerous, she would have to resort to her other weapons...her fists or a short dagger if she could unhook it from her belt.....
The hand grasping her leg suddenly let go and the merman swam up to eye level with her. His face was marred by scarring...no, not scarring, but the ridges of bones that helped guide him through the water...and then the blow landed in her stomach, knocking the wind from her lungs....
Flares mind reeled, both from the power of the blow and the lack of oxygen.......
sorry, ran out of time, will finish later! @.@
