According to Retrojunk, it was co-produced in both America and Japan.

It's the same animation style as G.I. Joe. Is that an anime too? Cause the style is awful similar to He-Man. That probably makes that an anime as well.

It's not an anime till around season 4. And even then it's not an anime.

GI Joe, Transformers, etc are not anime. They just had it drawn mostly in Japan or wherever from what I remember. If that was all it took to make it anime then Simpsons must be too cause I know some episodes were drawn in Korea.

anime

Post by Deluded »

code lyoko is I believe a french show doing cg art. It may be influenced by anime but I doubt that's why it looks that way. anyway, from a stylistic view point all of the "anime cash in shows" you've mentioned, may use certain aspects of anime, but none of them imitate it completely. I will say that "totally spies" annoys the hell out of me, but not because it has sweat drops or other emoticons.

As for older tv shows in america (retro if you wish although I lived through most of that so I don't believe in that word...)

yes transformers, gi joe, teenage mutant ninja turtles, my little pony and various other shows were drawn (in part) by companies in japan like toei. but if you really want to think of "retro" anime in america think thunder cats, voltron, speed racer, star blazers and some of the others. Those were actually made in japan for japan using the anime style.

your have to watch more than the animation style to see if it's anime. right now you're likening something like firefly to star trek just because their both in space.

I would like to apologize for sounding condescending, but I'm an art major and have studied film as well. and there's more to a piece than the way it looks.
Confusion is my permenant state of being...At least I thought it was...Maybe it wasn't....Ah! I'm so confused!

It's not?? But it's set in Beverly Hills, California....

Where was it made originally, then?

Beginning and ending episodes of anime series are made in Japan and the middle parts are outsourced to Korea for cheap.

Considering there's a Japanese voice cast for The Transformers, I would have to dispute your claim. I don't know about G.I. Joe, though chances are since they both came from Hasbro and use the same style...

But whoever said GI Joe and He-Man have awfully similar styles deserves to be smacked around with a still-flopping barracuda.

The american industry as a whole are not "stealing" anime, the reason why anime has been such a huge influence in todays "american cartoons" is because most animators out there these days are more aware of anime, and its charm.

Anime is great because it contains deep plots, with well developed characters.

Don't EVER compare Disney to Anime, Disney hardly does animation anymore - they got fucking raped by the anime industry, all they can do is "remaster" their little snowwhite "master pieces" and sell them out as high quality dvd's.

Anime probally won't stop for a long, long, long while. Reason being the kind of hardcore cg-ing methods the crazy bastards in japan have been developing, it just keeps getting better and better. There is also no loss of plots and story development in anime, japanese people like to incorporate foreign ideals, government issues and even religion into their anime's, they look through history for idea's then twist em around to their favor thus proving that anime isn't always as random as people like to beleive, its just that the average american idiot is too fucking stupid to understand.
( I dare you to find an anime that doesn't have any historical reference to it. )

Though most cartoons are heavily influenced by anime, it is a fucking joke compared to the real thing, american writers are mostly comprised of sadistic freaks, or create overly bombastic plots with no real depth to them, everything is "appeal to emotion".

An example would be xaio lin showdown, there are many things wrong with this cartoon ( sadly I did some research on this show. )
1. Its very fucking stupid as hell, its america's perception of asian culture at its worst. BULLSHIT.
2. Thats suppose to be an imitation of anime? ROFL. JOO FUCKING SUX, LEARN HOW TO CG NOOBS.
3. The fuck. Why do they pronounce kimiko keee meee koww.
4. The plot is to gather some shengongwu crap and save the world from something evil. Gotta catch'em all. ( I wouldn't classify pokemon as anime, it itself is its own category, digimon and dbz goes under the "pokemon" category. )
5. This is a children's cartoon equivelent to pokemon, american cartoons are intended for children only. Don't even bother comparing anime to this junk, if you want american animation you can go check out family guy or american dad ( thats the good stuff ) or aqua teen hunter force and possibly 12oz ( the junk )

America does not have any form of animation at all. Its all random.
Japanese are unified under one form of cartoon, anime - and since anime is not racist, based on japanese people only, or stupid we can all enjoy it, when characters in anime try to speak english, stop. think, how many times have you seen some non asian dude go "WACHAA, KUNGFU FIGHTA, GUNG HAI FAT CHOI! LAWL" And think, how many times have you seen some non asian guy beat down a bunch of asian guys with asian martial arts in a movie?

Sleeping Beauty was a masterpiece. I'm not going to go into the modern Disney now, I just wanted to note that.

To Asians and to those who have studied the Anime style closely, it does not seem so unified. Just as in America, the shows are good, bad, and ugly.

Have you ever watched Beck? It's a good anime, despite the obvious glorification of the American gang throwing the F-word around and holding people down and punching them.

As for America developing its own style of animation, well, there are several reasons why that would be next to impossible. There are reasons why the Anime "style" in its most distinct and well known forms works so well. The eyes and eyebrows are truly expressive. Animation necessitates simplicity, and if you are to emphasize features, those are the ones to choose.

I believe the real distinguishing characteristic of Eastern art in general is their relationship to the line. That's my favorite quality - the lines that are not quite straight but not really curved. And that's a quality their art has had for ages, long before animation showed up.

European art has always been more about texture. It is very difficult to create an animated piece that really makes use of what we have been working to perfect all this time. And America's art background, although diverse, is primarily European (That diversity also works "against" us in creating our own style). Sleeping Beauty was one of the movies that did that, but it took time, money and force of personality to get that done. Texture takes time for each picture drawn.

The thing about the Japanese line is the artist practices for the quality; that is where time is spent, then the line itself is drawn in an instant. This form of art works very well with animation, because many, many simple pictures must be drawn.

I don't believe that we are stealing anything from the Japanese in general; they simply adapted to the new medium faster because of their mindset.

I will say that I hate Loonatics - taking a distinctly American cartoon and intentionally Asianizing it for profit reasons may not be completely evil, but sometimes it just doesn't work. At all.

Wow, I didn't realize my topic would go into such an intense conversation. Heh...

But I guess the reason why I was so angry at the whole thing, was the thoughts people were getting about it. I hate hearing people say "Liek omg liek i luv <insert a show that looks like anime but isn't> but liek i cant find manga!!!!" (please excuse the n00bish) And some people come up to me, saying their favorite anime is Avatar: the last airbender, which has an anime-like style, but isn't technically anime, because it wasn't made by the japanese. I admit that like the show a lot, even if it's not real anime.

But now, I don't care what is or isn't anime, as long as it's entertaining, and isn't just a rip-off of another show. I mean, I'm not japanese (even if I'm technically asian), but I draw anime, and I consider it to be anime, so... I guess there's nothing wrong with other people drawing anime, too. And putting it in an animated form. And not caring about anatomy and proportions. Much.

Sooooooooooooooooooo... I guess it's just a personal opinion on what's right and wrong... right?

That's when everyone threw spears at DancingChaos. But she lived. Almost. :shifty:

Have you noticed???!!! America is stealing anime! Cartoons are gradually getting more and more sweatdrops!!! And then cartoons are getting those big eyes... The worst is 'totally spies'... It's so obvious.

And WHY are they doing this?! For money! Kids are all psyched out about Anime and the Japanese, so the Americans have to imitate it to make kids THINK it is Anime, so more kids would watch it! THEN they would get more people watching their stupid shows! See?! It's all horrid, I say! HORRID!!!

What's worse is all of the American cartoons we all know and love are fading away!!! Slowly! I bet in about 20 years, Anime will completely take over America!!!

Don't get me wrong; I absolutely love anime!!! I just think that Japan should make THEIR own stuff as Americans should do vice-versa. I don't know why all the Americans are trying to copy off of them... They're not as funny, and their ideas are poor... It gets me slightly annoyed. Or VERY annoyed.

What do you think?
I think you talk too much and don't take enough action.
Don't like what's on TV?
Well, make something better and get it animated.
