I used to draw Loony Tunes when I was about 7 (dynamite always fascinated me) but I got bored with it after a while and stopped drawing altogether. I got into anime in junior high and sketched a bit, but decided that everything I did was awful and assumed I would be better off watching than participating.

Then about a year ago I started reading webcomics. El Goonish Shive was (and still is) my main motivation. I hadn't touched a pen in years, but that style of drawing just seemed to click, and now I've got a comic of my own. Hopefully sarcasm and sadism will help No Vacancy survive until I've improved artistically, I am still woefully new at this.

I was first inspired by faint remembrances of Teknoman and Lensman, two anime (one a movie) that I watched when I was a squirt.

And neither of which most anyone remembers.

And my art style was started by trying to draw an action figure of a Zentraedi Overlord and refined by watching too much Yugioh.

I know, I'm a dork. XD
I am a random creature which flits in from nowhere!

Out of total boredom.

I think what got me into drawing in the first place was the GoBots. Twenty years later, I still hear remarks about how I should stop drawing robots like I work at Hanna Barbera. It's more like a badge of honor for me at this point. I've never understood exactly what would be good about everybody copying the new fad in unison.

What got me into comics, though, was a friend of mine's interest in anime and manga. Slayers was the first fantasy story I "got." Then I lifted alot of style elements from Ranma 1/2 when I got the idea I could make my own comic. That comic pulled alot of inspiration from the MMORPGs I used to play, cliche as it probably is now.

Other comics I've done since have drawn on some really random elements, from Lupin III to the A-Team. Usually they don't last very long; I think my record is about 8 full issues and often less. The only thing I haven't really tried too hard is a traditional strip comic like this site is geared towards. I don't want to be a Penny Arcade copycat or fall into the many holes parodied in HNTRAC (not the least of which is "constantly on hiatus") :/

I have to say Tenchi Muyo's style has had a huge affect on my style as well as Kazuya Minekura's art style. Even after taking anatomy and figure study classes in college and high school, my "best" cartooning style always remains the blend of Tenchi and Saiyuki styles.

What inspired me?.... Well, my family had a 2 to 3 yr stint in Japan so I grew up watching anime and Disney.....And then they finally go around to selling the mangas in the 1990s.....Well, let's say, adding in some talent for writing and natural drawing talent and finding Megatokyo and this I think now obsurce webcomic called Umber, a werewolf comic....seeing at least a number of early webcomicers do well...than fanfiction of course.... I think the turning points was that I didn't have the stomach for doctor or the head for psychology, requirement for teaching, so one had to find something to do with an art degree...so ya, it's cuminlative for me..
What keeps me drawing or at least trying to draw comics? I'm not completely sure, it's more of a really bad habit I have but this time I think I got the story down....maybe....total missed the answer.....blagh.
