Forgive me if it has been explained already (I couldn't find it anywhere) but what exactly is he? I got that some mage cast a spell that makes him (shed? molt?) every month, but I presume that has nothing to do with his pointy ears or tail. And I also presume that we haven't seen him in that state, only his normal appearance. So, IS that his normal appearance? Kind of a fantasy Nightcrawler, eh? He should know how to fence, then.
My hypothesis: Like Hazel, Dan is some sort of mixed creature (ex. elf + hmm... some race we haven't seen yet?), hence the blue parts mentioned above vs. the rest of his human appearance. I somehow got this idea from the segment being called "Mixed Quarter". I had an idea of that being the place where outcast creatures, including "half-breeds", etc. could live freely (or alternately, were forced to live). At soem point I realized that it was about all the different races (species, what word will we use here?) that live in this one part of town with all this interesting stuff going on (like the fair). I'm still fond of my hypothesis, though. I guess it's apparent that Dan is one of my favorite characters in the comic.
(chuckle)

Actually Nyers, there's some differences between Dan and Andra. The physical build is very different, and while Andra has those split ears, hers go much farther along that tangent.
Eulin, you are right on very many counts. I applaud you. The mixed quarter is basically the part of town where all the people who don't fit in anywhere else go. Though that sometimes include people from extablished races as well, that simply have different views from most others they know. The interesting thing is, the mixed quarter actually isn't just a small section of the city anymore. Which is why it's so hard to miss with newcomers. At this point, it consists of about a third of the city, and it's still growing.
To tell the truth, I'm not even sure WHAT species Dan is! But yeah, he is a very fun character indeed!

ANYTHING is possible...within limits.
Those limits are set on ourselves by ourselves.
The trick is getting around them...
