Well... so much for that!

So much for having a powerful weapon to control. It sounds like he won't be able to control it at all beyond pointing it in the right direction and hoping the sword picks an appropriate power. Nothing worse than battling beasties and having a sword spit out bubbles instead of lighting or somesuch!

but doesn't that just add to the tension of what he's gonna do on his next asignment and he runs into trouble?

Was I the only one hearing 'Kung Fu Fighting' as Quentyn tried out his sword today?
Every body was Ques Tor fi-i-itng!
And they were... fast as lightninng!
Also, I notice that the sales pitch hasn't showed up lately. What's the good of a running gag if it runs out on you?

Finally, now that we know that Quentyns sword is effectively a pointy shaped computer, I find it a pity he didn't have it with him when he fought the wraiths.
It would have been the first time a computer was used to kill a mouse!

Agreed.
Aaaah! Wait! That means that I actually agreed with Solidus! Eeek, this is scary. :o

It's been suggested before in other threads, but I think it's worth observing again that the effect of the sword may be tied, at least in part, to Quentyn's emotional state via the bonding. Notice that whenever he was feeling an intense emotion such as mortal fear (the three Gragum attacking him and Nessie) or rage (after being made to feel foolish the first time the sword "misfired" in the testing ground), the sword has generated a powerful weapon effect in response.

It may not actually control which effect is generated, but intense emotion -- especially adrenaline-fueled emotions like fear or anger -- may "bias" the random-number generator in such a way that a weapon effect is more likely than a nonsense effect.

Besides, if he had had his sword with him the wraiths would have sucked the power out of it and multiplied.

So you could say that he was lucky not to have his sword with him...

However, I do find the idea of a computer killing a mouse funny :D

Aw, see, coming from computing, I would have to say "there's no such thing as random" -- but even if the lux-paths are like circuitry, that doesn't mean they are.

heh, that reminds me of a class in stats, where we were asked to get excel to generate random numbers. out of the class of 30 about 25 of us got identical spreadsheets (the rest put in the wrong inputs :P)

Call me crazy, but... we're supposed to believe that a couple of drunken kits with little to no experience managed to put just the right completely unknown runes on this sword? And, further, that the effect has just happened to be exactly what was needed every time the sword was REALLY needed (aside from the sales pitch, which is probably a different line of runes)?

What a string of happy coincidences!

No, I don't buy it. Or, if you will, "The universe is just a little too darned orderly!"

See, that is what I thought to, but I when kept asking about any possible mysterious background or nature to the sword, I was threatened with trout bludgening. :(

And now I say.....IGLOO!!!

actually the idea of the fractal and the logic runes are two very simple ideas that could easily get overlooked unless someone was simple minded (drunk) enough to think about them. as for getting them in the right way,

well... i like to think that there was some divine intervention going on

maybe that explains this:

http://forums.ke ... t=64890

really it wouldn't take much intervention to make it turn out all right, just enough to make sure they did it ok, i mean when drunk your mental defences go down don't they? any suggestion from on high or down low might have been responded to with a kind of "ssshure, shounds good to me."

or am i totally wrong here?

Yup. Took me a while to find, too. :)

(Not sure "crossover" is the right word, though.)
