Well... Mystery solved....

I guess that *ahem* ties off the loose ends. Most of them anyway.
Lemme see if I get this right. Bad guy is making monsters. Long after he's dead and gone, some of his critters stage a break out, move to the center of the room, and (somehow, before these events or during them) get their tails all tied up. And start spawning little baby anti-lux rats.
Question one. Other then "So they can't move anywhere," why are their tails tied together?
Question two. Why do they just now break out?
Question three. Why do they just now start spawning anti-lux rats?
Idea: They were spawning anti-lux rats for a while, and thats why they could just now break out?
Hrm... more loose ends...

I have two conclusions.
1. That the rats had only begun to multiply recently do to...
Faltering equipment (the lab is 300+ years old)
and that the rats escaped from a basicaly dormant, or incarcerated state.
I think that big cristal hanging from the roof might be alittle importaint.
Maybee that was previosly inactive.
2. That someone may have intentionaly started these chain of events, by setting the lab up to produce the rats on purpose so that they would overrun the city, or for some other purpose.

3) the floor boards rotted enough to let the torrent of rats loose, one at a time at first into the bedroom, until now when there was a wave.

This one, at least, I can answer. They're apparantly supposed to represent a Rat King, an urban legend of groups of rats who end up with their tails tangled in a a living gordian knot stuck together because of dirt-incrusted wounds and the like.
Naturally, if you're going to make a "rat wight creator", making it in the image of something resembling a Rat King makes sense.
And I suspect those rats have been stuffed and mounted a long time ago...

Shavahi wrote:Ooooo..... An evil version of a Rat King. I've heard of these... and after a quick google search:
Quote:
Young rats close to one another in the nest sometimes get their tails entangled and become a living Gordian knot glued together by dirt encrusted wounds and the like. When they try to pull apart the tails are pulled tight, and the knots strengthen, knitting the rats together. As many as 32 rats are trapped in these knots and have died as a result of being unable to forage for themselves. However, they are often unselfishly fed for life by other family members.

Perhaps the Rat King is somehow sustaining itself via the shadowrats.
Shavahi (hope I spelled the name right) just made this observation in "Put My Trust in Thee" - I find it very interesting. A lux-charged Rat King...somehow, I don't think it was made by accident. Sounds like our friendly neighborhood biomancer was doing some of his infamous tinkering. The green goo sustained it for centuries until it finally broke free, and now it is spawning shadow-rats.

I gotta hand it to ya, RH. I have never heard of a rat king until now. (For that matter, never heard of a honey badger until you mentioned it.). Wow. Learn something new every day.
The crystal would seem importent, but how did it activate? Or if it has always been running, why do the rats show up now?
I like the idea of the shadowrats fending for the King. That would almost seem... kind. Eh. What ever. Show some mercy and kill the king(s).

Notice what appear to be cables and electrically-conductive attachments to the crystal? I bet it's supplying energy from the lightning storms. Gen-you-wine Dr. Frankentstein stuff here.

I would think it was obvious how the rat king escaped.... If you take a look at the condition his former container is in....

I knew what a Rat king is, but only because of the Terry Pratchett book 'Amazing Maurice and his educated rodents'...

I think the huge crystal is the "trigger" and it's discharges have been the cause of the brownouts. The crystal must act like a huge lux capacitor that builds up a charge until it can't hold any more and then suddenly, violently discharges making wight "copies" of the rat king like some accursed lux powered Xerox machine.
At least that's my theory.

Could one use a lux capacitor and an eLorean to build an ime machine?
Sorry, but somebody had to do it.

Maybe, but its still doesn't answear the big question that still remains even after finding this 'living nexus'.
Why now? Why, out of the hundred years or so since the lab was abandoned dose this lux capasator sudenly stutter into life now? Why didn't the rats excape earler? Were they 're-animated' by the crystal I wonder?

You've also heard of them from something else. You see it the christmas season. Numtcracer anyone. The Ratking is the top villian of the story and his army of rats.

The crystal have probably been working all this time, but until now there hasn't been anything to drain it.
The Rat king probably got out after the 'cage' it was in collapsed.
Why did it collapse?
Maybe a rock fell from the roof and damaged it?
(It is an old lab after all)

Maybe a rock fell from the roof and damaged it?
It looks like about half the stones lining that arched doorway slid down and smashed it...?

This poses an interesting question...
How do you... uh... "break" a nexus of rats?
