Ummm, quite. At least this proves that it's possable for it to hold a spell through all the half erased rubbish on it.
It's also a darn good reason for him to have acted as he did when junior started to fiddle with it.

She could be in the foul clutches of an abominable snow man. Of course, it would be easy to find her what with the creature babbling more to itself than anyone else. "Oh boy, a raccoon! I will hug her and squeeze her and name her George..."

I'm just surprised that the sword was purchased from Max. I guess with it having the Artifacers Guild practice item (what with their stamp on it and all), and Kestrel being a new apprentice in the Artifacers Guild, I always had thought it had come from her, left over from one of her practice exercises.

I just loved this episode.
I get this feeling like the Sword of the Questor is going to just sort of suck up annoying spells everywhere he goes, with them slowly mutating one another as they load onto its already full plate.
---------------------------------------------------
It *was* an improvement. Now the sword could really be intimidating.
(in really big, green, dripping letters a la PDCL plumbing)
I AM THE SWORD OF QUESTOR, FORGED BY HANDS UNKOWN. ONE OF THE MANY FINE..
Providing, of course, that the intimidatee didn't speak Rac Connian.
-sigh-

I had the idea that it might work as a magic-piercing sword, since the static effect would prevent any spell from sticking... But I guess it holds spells cast on it after all.
Of course, you've got to wonder... how did Max get that spell to stick before the trio got their hands on it? Wasn't it 'useless' at that point?
Hmm. It was described as having 'spell trails so muddled and tangled that they neutralize eachother'. I wonder... perhaps the new method of enchantment that they discovered involved turning all that into a kind of circuit-board? I mean, when you look at electronics, the traces look all messy and confusing, if you don't know how it works...

You know the music industry is dying when actual mainstream artists start making remixes of other songs instead of original works.

Um, Andrick... are you sure you want to be dragging Random George into this thing that way?Andrick wrote:She could be in the foul clutches of an abominable snow man. I should clarify what I intendend by "friendly". My intended meaning was non-hostile, of course that's easily deduced because she's still alive after several days.
Of course another possability comes to mind. She may have been kidnapped because someone wants to use her ability with magic.
Of course the revelation that she's been making these firefly tracers regularly raises some interesting questions.
If Quentyn figured out the tracers all by himself someone else ought to have been able to figure it out too. So why hasn't anyone been shouting it from the rooftops?

Undiscovered genius
Well, SOMEONE has to be the first to figure out that a child's a prodigy.
Note that Quentyn clarified "They're not just glow buttons." Rac Conan children dabble with lux and "Play wizard" the way human children play "house" and dress up. The adults probably overlooked what she was doing as a little girl playing make-believe to make herself feel better. After all, if a 5 year old told you they were building a space shuttle in the back yard....
Quentyn was basically the only one silly enough to give her "magic baubles" a serious look.

Ralph, I really like the character you've written for Quentyn. He puts up with a bunch of people saying he's worthless, then he finds something they didn't - and he treats them with respect. Several people I know in real life would be acting pretty obnoxiously, an "I found what you were too stupid to see!" sort of thing...
He's acting the way an adult should act, leaving the others more likely to treat him as an adult.
Well, other than that "GETITOFF!" part...
I'd guess the Captain, the Frog Mage, and the rest will probably choose to help Quentyn in the future, as he works to get his career going.
I'd almost bet that when this search is all over and done, Quentyn will hand that gold coin back to the young swamp kid who hired him. It just seems the way he'd act, somehow.

Oh no he shouldn't! BAD precedent! Not even the village council gets freebies, remember?UncleMonty wrote:I'd almost bet that when this search is all over and done, Quentyn will hand that gold coin back to the young swamp kid who hired him. It just seems the way he'd act, somehow.
What he should do is ask where the coin came from. I'll bet there's an interesting story to be heard.

The coin is probably not a big deal, except it may be from the family's money cache, and not his personal property.
If he didn't have the approval of his parents to hire the Questor, the coin could not be rightfully given to Quentyn.
Of course Quentyn's idea that most of the swamp folk are dirt poor might just be wrong.

I have to agree. I'm really impressed with the kid. This is the start of something great, no question.UncleMonty wrote:Ralph, I really like the character you've written for Quentyn. I think Quentyn will try to give it back, anyway. Maybe he'll get something instead of the gold coin... like a sword that doesn't advertise itself.UncleMonty wrote:I'd almost bet that when this search is all over and done, Quentyn will hand that gold coin back to the young swamp kid who hired him. What kind of treasure could be in a swamp? Unless the kitnapper is a rich mage who could "sniff out" her talent, Quentyn is going to be disappointed. I quote: "One rescue for one gold coin and whatever swag found along the way." Unless "swag" is some kind of muck, I don't think he'll be finding much of it on this trip.
And besides, remember what he thought when the swamp kid gave him the coin? "Only humans use coins." Now you all can think what you want, but I have my own ideas as to how this could tie into my fanfic. The White Stag may have granted his wish, but somebody needs to guide the lad. Somebody who knows what a Questor should be like. Perhaps somebody who's old enough to remember...and has the funds to do it.
Remember, the last Questor was roughly 300 years ago.
Food for thought, eh?

With the bill signed "paid in full". One Questor to search for missing child: one gold coin. Questor achieves goal, overcoming all obstacles and criticisms to add such a resounding success as a famous notch to his belt of experience: priceless. Some things money can't buy and a reputation is one of them.UncleMonty wrote:...when this search is all over and done, Quentyn will hand that gold coin back to the young swamp kid who hired him...
